WWE’s Austin Theory Experiment Has Failed Again

Austin Theory returned to WWE programming at the back end of last year, joining The Vision faction in the process. In that time he earned a spot at WrestleMania 42, won the World Tag Team Championships, and began a dislikable heelish partnership with Maxxine Dupri. However, despite some of the positives that have come in the way of Theory, there is a big argument to be made that he is once again falling short of the expectations that WWE has of him, and that the Theory experiment has failed once again. Theory simply isn’t connecting and still does not feel like a star of the future.

WWE Has Failed With Austin Theory Previously

• Vince McMahon handpicked Theory as WWE’s future.
• Theory failed to reach WWE’s expectations.
• He’s been directionless in the Triple H era of WWE.

Austin Theory emerged as Vince McMahon’s handpicked star of the future during the latter days of his tenure running WWE creative, leading Theory to winning the United States Championship and Money In The Bank contract (and stealing a golden egg)… but fans were really struggling to buy into the hype of Theory. Sure, he had very solid fundamentals, but nothing that saw him stand out as anything overly special amongst all the other wrestlers on the WWE roster.

When Triple H took creative control of WWE, it wasn’t long until WWE gave up on the Theory experiment. Despite feuds with big stars such as Seth Rollins and John Cena, Theory failed to find himself elevated in WWE, losing the briefcase and losing his standing on the roster. He settled into the tag team division with Grayson Waller, which looked to be a far more appropriate position for him on the card. The pair are both solid workers, have good personalities, but neither have world title potential. Theory simply failed to find a connection with fans despite WWE billing him as a future star.

Austin Theory’s Inclusion In The Vision Was A Fresh Start

• Theory joined The Vision in 2025.
• This should have been a brand new start for Theory in WWE.
• Theory’s role in The Vision has been bland and boring.

After a couple of years of a whole heap of nothing, Austin Theory returned to WWE programming as the mystery WarGames assailant who was committed to aiding The Vision win matches. He was ushered in as a member of the group, but with former Seth Rollins on the shelf, Theory struggled to receive the same rub and benefits of the likes of Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed. In fact, Theory instantly felt like the “fall guy” of the faction, very much becoming the least important member in the group. It might have been a fresh start to Theory, but things began developing in the same way as before.

Fans fell out of care for Theory quite quickly, treating him with the same indifference as they did previously. As a character, Theory has failed to stand out or develop anything interesting, which could of course be the fault of WWE’s creative. WWE has paired him with Maxxine Dupri, creating a new detestable heelish couple who are obsessed with PDA. It does generate some heat, but as the weeks press on the whole act just comes across as uninspired. Dupri and Theory are walking the line of “go-away heat” rather than effective heel hatred (or maybe that is the point, who knows).

Austin Theory Is A Decent Heel But He Isn’t Interesting

• Theory has never had a memorable singles match in WWE.
• His character work as a heel is basic and fans don’t have too much interest.
• Theory has ruined The Vision faction.

Austin Theory’s talent as a professional wrestler has never been in doubt, as he is smooth, crisp, and executes everything well. However, this can only get you so far. He is so far behind the other names on the roster who can deliver world class in-ring performances matched with intense, emotional psychology that can get fans invested and hyped up, which is why he will never break into the upper ranks of the card. Can anyone name any memorable Austin Theory match in WWE? No, but that doesn’t mean he is bad, it just means that he exists in a place lower down the card.

WWE has tried and failed to create something special with Theory, and this experiment is failing again as he is only serving to currently lessen the aura of Bron Breakker and further reach the downfall of The Vision faction, which is on its last legs.
