Andrade El Idolo wins MLP debut, calls for Northern Rising match
This week’s episode of Maple Leaf Pro: Mayhem, taped at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario, earlier this summer, opened with a segment backstage. Behind the curtains, we saw Sinner & Saint confront Maple Leaf Pro Tag Team Champions 1st Faction. While Sheldon Jean and Brent Banks were willing to engage in some healthy trash talk, they didn’t want to get into the ring with the former TNA duo. Well, unfortunately for them, manager Bryce Hansen jumped into the conversation and said they’d be willing to meet in the ring tonight!
The first match of the night saw AEW National Champion Andrade El Idolo make his Maple Leaf Pro debut, facing off in singles action against TJP. We had a much more enraged-than-usual Don Callis at the desk this week, as he had to commentate over an enemy in Andrade.
Andrade picked up a near fall after scoring a high-speed meteora in the corner. TJP started to make a comeback late, countering a move from Andrade into a DDT. TJP climbed to the top and, after fighting off Andrade, scored a Mamba Splash for a two-count of his own.
TJP wobbled Andrade with a spinning back kick. He came off the ropes for a follow-up move but ran right into a spinning back elbow from Andrade. The AEW star then connected with his DM finisher for the pinfall win. Good opener between these two. Andrade said weeks ago that he was dealing with an injury while at this taping. When watching this match, it’s clear that he’s good at masking such problems.
Andrade got on the microphone afterward and addressed Rohan Raja, who recently called for a match against any Luchador for Northern Rising. “You think can beat me? Andrade El Idolo, the Real Latino Man? I will see you on October 3rd. I have one question: How you know?”
Sinner & Saint beat tag champs in non-title showdown
In a follow-up to this evening’s opening segment, we saw Sinner & Saint (Judas Icarus and Travis Williams) face 1st Faction (Sheldon Jean and Brent Banks) in a non-title tag match. A fun little detail here to point out how short-notice this match was: Banks and Jean were still putting wrist tape on as they walked to the ring.
Sinner & Saint were on a roll early on. Williams took out Jean with a huge tope suicida as Icarus scored a near fall on Banks with a hard lariat. Banks escaped a double-team move from Sinner & Saint. He looked to tag out, but partner Jean was busy arguing with manager Bryce Hansen at ringside!
With Jean unavailable, Banks continued to get picked on. Sinner & Saint connected a combination head kick and facebuster double-team move for the pinfall win, a result that should set them up for a title opportunity sometime soon.
We saw another vignette showing a spiralling Psycho Mike. “Can’t you see it, Michael?” a voice inside his head said. “The world keeps using you, because you keep asking for permission.”
Since Priscilla Kelly had the pin stolen from her in last week’s #1 contenders match, she revealed in a backstage segment that Maple Leaf Pro management has given her a title shot against Gisele Shaw for next week.
Grizzled Young Vets secure future tag title opportunity
The final match saw four teams face off for a shot at the Maple Leaf Pro Tag Team Championships. CMLL’s Capitan Suicida and Neon, The Good Brothers, the Grizzled Young Veterans, and Subculture were competing for the title shot in this one.
Neon had a fun run early in this match, first against James Drake then Mark Andrews. The CMLL duo were on a roll after a break, with Capitan Suicida getting a two-count after giving James Drake a Swanton Bomb.
The Good Brothers hit the ring and gave Suicida a double-team head kick into a Samoan Drop for a near fall. Late in the match, we had a classic hectic sequence where all eight men got into the match one by one for quick spots.
It looked as though Subculture were nearing a win after Webster scored a Swanton Bomb on Gibson, but Karl Anderson got into the ring to break the follow-up pin attempt. The CMLL duo wiped out the Good Brothers with dual dives at ringside. They tried to give Doc Gallows a double-team suplex, but Gallows reversed it into a double suplex onto the ramp at ringside. Hard bump!
Back in the ring, Webster got a near fall with a Victory Roll pin attempt onto Gibson. Drake got into the ring and delivered a Grit Your Teeth double Codebreaker alongside Gibson to Webster for the pinfall victory. The GYV are next in line for a title shot. This was an electric match. But, considering the teams involved, that’s not surprising at all.
Backstage, Evil Uno confronted Josh Alexander about crashing Stu Grayson’s latest title celebration. Alexander showed no remorse. “When you’re the champ, that’s the kinda pressure you gotta deal with,” he said. “And he’s just the interim champ. Think about that.”
Northern Rising opponents Alexander & Grayson go face-to-face
We saw a clip from backstage at an AEW Dynamite taping, where Steve Maclin jumped Northern Rising opponent Adam Copeland. Who in AEW security let Maclin in the building!? Maclin blinded Copeland with a spray to the eyes, then scored ground and pound shots before storming off.
The final segment of the night saw Maple Leaf Pro Champion Josh Alexander come to the ring for a promo. This was Alexander’s second appearance on TV tonight, as he made his in-ring return on Dynamite just a few hours prior.
Alexander spoke a little about his return and what it meant to be back. Before he was able to share some “great news,” the champ was cut off by interim titleholder Stu Grayson. After getting interrupted by Alexander recently, this was Grayson simply returning the favor.
Grayson said he came to the ring not to talk but to fight. But, assuming that Alexander still wasn’t medically cleared, he thought he couldn’t lay his hands on him. Alexander dropped the news on Grayson: He’s cleared to wrestle again!
Grayson said he wanted the title unification bout right here, right now. Alexander, showing his promoter instincts, said the match will instead happen as part of Northern Rising next month.
Alexander said Grayson needs to be at his best when they face off next month. “All these people around the world deserve to see the two best Canadian wrestlers in the world go at it for the most prestigious championship,” he said.
Alexander said he sees the cracks in Grayson’s foundation from the pressure of being champ. He warned that he will “dogwalk” him at Northern Rising, and that he will send him to “the back of the line, where you started and quite frankly, where you belong.”
The trash talk became too much for Grayson, who dropped Alexander with a right hand. Grayson asked Alexander to stand up and fight, but Alexander decided to retreat instead. Alexander is going to leave the fighting for October.
This was a stellar segment. Obviously, the timelines didn’t fully line up with this segment and real life, as we already knew before this evening’s show that Alexander was cleared to compete. But, ignoring that small detail, this was a great way to build that match. Overall, Maple Leaf Pro has done a stellar job hyping up Northern Rising.
