Tony Khan Has Fixed One Of AEW’s Biggest Problems

Over the last two years, AEW has certainly been on a high in terms of momentum, quality, and interest, but the product still has some imperfections. For many years, fans have often pointed to an issue that has been present time and time again; too many championships. Having a high number of prizes isn’t necessarily an issue if they’re all booked well, but too frequently have AEW allowed title reigns to be put on the backburner, lose focus, and suffer negatively in terms of booking. However, 2026 might have been the best year in addressing this issue – and it hasn’t come by decreasing the number of belts. Tony Khan has finally fixed this problem by giving every division and title positive booking.

All Of AEW’s Tag Team & Trios Divisions Are Getting Attention

• In AEW, either the men’s tag team or trios division can take a backseat.

Some of the biggest victims of AEW having one-too-many championships and divisions were both the tag team and trios scenes. It was often the case that when focus was put on one division, then the other would take a backseat. This has led to the trios division struggling to ever find real momentum or importance in AEW, and the tag team division taking a nosedive throughout 2024 and 2025. This has changed in 2026. Tony Khan is finally utilizing his roster to the fullest extent by stacking both of these divisions with lots of teams, frequent defenses, and featuring both consistently on every show. The men’s tag team division is currently stacked with the likes of Cage & Cope, The Young Bucks, FTR, Motor City Machine Guns, Darby Allin & Steven Borden, The Don Callis Family, and more, while the trios division is seeing the likes of The New Level & Swerve Strickland, Adam Page & Brodido, The Conglomeration, Death Riders, The Dogs, The Demand, and more all gunning it for gold. All of these names and talents in the mix adds instant prestige.

In the women’s tag team division, things are not as busy by any means, but the title scene has remained fairly consistent since its inception. The Divine Dominion has gotten away with a lack of defenses due to Tony Khan booking them in frequent squash matches, though now that The Brawling Birds hold the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championships, some more care and attention must be made to the division. There are still alliances and teams being built, such as Maya World & Hyan, Britt Baker & Persephone, and others, so the division still feels active and not ignored.

AEW’s Championships Are Being Defended Regularly On TV & PPV

• Dynamite & Collision are a must-see with plenty of title matches.
• Several AEW title pictures are busy with multiple challengers.
• In the past, AEW failed to make some titles feel important.

One of the biggest ways to ensure that championships remain important and prestigious is by having frequent defenses and title changes, especially when it comes to TV. In 2026 alone, AEW programming has featured a grand total of 142 championship matches (as of September 2026), proving that titles are not simply being left on the sidelines. The belt with the lowest number of defenses in the AEW Continental Title with 8, though the reigning champion Jon Moxley has been busy with countless eliminator matches, which has been the case for several other titles too.

Every championship and champion has remained active and busy, whereas in the past with the likes of TNT Champion Wardlow, Women’s World Champion Mariah May, or AEW World Tag Team Champions The Hurt Syndicate, and others, they would sometimes go for weeks or months off TV and therefore not defending their gold. Instead, there has been an even spread and the issue of champions not defending championships is no longer present, even with the large number of prizes.

Tony Khan Still Has Too Many Titles On AEW Programming

Tony Khan’s handling of AEW’s championships should certainly be applauded, but there is still a case to be made that there are too many up for grabs. For instance, the creation of the National Championship has felt fairly pointless, with none of the current champions in Ricochet, Mark Davis, Jack Perry or Andrade El Idolo managing to create much care or importance for what is a meaningless belt. The men’s singles division is already busy with gold with the AEW World Championship, International Championship, Continental Championship and TNT Championship, so a fifth title is unnecessary.

Things are still not entirely perfect, with AEW sometimes utilizing technique of reigning champions gunning after other prizes to keep them busy; for instance TNT Champion Kevin Knight challenging AEW World Champion Kenny Omega and AEW Continental Champion Jon Moxley being thrown in the world title mix, but there is still plenty of positives to shout about across every division and championship.
