Has WWE Accepted Defeat In A Battle With AEW?

For several years, WWE has attempted time and time again to counter-program AEW in order to hurt business, impact viewership, lessen ticket sales, and ultimately put the rival promotion out of business. The latest instance of this comes at this month’s AEW All Out 2026 PPV in Chicago, resulting in WWE booking a Worlds Collide event (featuring CM Punk no less) in Chicago at the very same time. However, with the early success of AEW All Out selling out completely, WWE may have already accepted defeat with the report from Fightful Select that the show has no current broadcast plans. So, has WWE changed their plans because of AEW’s success?

WWE’s Counter-Programming Of AEW All Out Failed

WWE’s attempts to host shows at the very same time as AEW events, in the same locations, or across the same weekend, have been met with disappointments around every turn. In spite of WWE’s counter-programming, AEW’s momentum (especially in recent years) has remained consistent in terms of PPV buys, attendance, and viewership. All Out 2026 is set to return to the Now Arena in Chicago, Illinois on September 26… and so is WWE Worlds Collide at the Allstate Arena just a 30 minute drive away.

However, WWE’s decision to run an arena in the same place at the same time has done nothing to hurt AEW in the slightest. Over a week away from All Out 2026 and with just three matches announced for the card, AEW sold out the NOW Arena completely. Given that AEW’s final week before shows provide a big boost in ticket sales for PPVs, it is easy to imagine the promotion being able to fill an even bigger venue and still sell it out, even with WWE running to counter it. WWE’s counter-program failed, and they have lost this latest (unnecessary) wrestling world battle.

WWE Worlds Collide Will Not Air Live

A report from Fightful Select has revealed that WWE is not intending to air Worlds Collide live. There are already some debates, discussion and beliefs that WWE has backed out of airing Worlds Collide live due to the fact that the show has failed in impacting AEW. With the likes of CM Punk on the card in his hometown, it was expected that this would follow with every other previous Worlds Collide event in WWE history and air live for fans to view on the likes of YouTube or another platform. This is no longer the case.

The match card for Worlds Collide was officially announced this week, and while there are some notable bouts on the card such as La Catalina vs. Roxanne Perez for the AAA Reinas De Reinas Championship and The Lucha Bros teaming up, the overall card resembles more of a house show than anything else. CM Punk will team with El Grande Americano & Rey Mysterio to take on Dominik Mysterio, JD McDonagh and Omos in what might be the most predictable match in WWE history, and one that screams of “house show main event” or “fun dark match”. Either way, WWE is not taking Worlds Collide too seriously by not airing it live, and there is a strong belief that this is the promotion accepting defeat to AEW… but is it?

WWE May Not Have Accepted Defeat Against AEW After All

More details from the likes of Fightful Select have suggested that WWE’s intentions for Worlds Collide could be to hide the event behind the new Club WWE subscription service as more incentive for fans to sign up. Just this past week, Stephanie Vaquer’s shocking Women’s World Championship win on a live event in Chile was also put behind a paywall for Club WWE members. While Worlds Collide was likely intended to deal some damage to All Out, TKO’s money-making minds will have likely been more concerned with putting this show forth to drive up content for Club WWE.

The likeliest scenario is that WWE have not changed their plans for Worlds Collide, and were always going to air the show after the fact. Regardless, AEW have undoubtedly exceeded expectations in selling out even with WWE’s competing show, and have still struck a victory regardless of whether WWE has accepted a defeat or not.
