Nigel McGuinness’s foot injury, which became a major storyline throughout the Continental Challenge Cup, was legitimate.

McGuinness tapped out to an ankle lock from Jon Moxley in the tournament final at AEW All In on Sunday at Wembley Stadium. Our own Bryan Alvarez writes that McGuinness’s foot really was injured during the tournament.

Alvarez wrote:

“So as it turns out, Nigel legit hurt his foot in the tournament and they turned it into a storyline to get through to Wembley.”

McGuinness suffered the injury in his first-round match against Katsuyori Shibata at the August 12 AEW Collision taping, with the match airing on August 15. He defeated Hechicero in the quarterfinals on the August 19 episode of Dynamite from Baltimore before defeating Kyle O’Reilly in the semifinals on the August 26 Dynamite from Glasgow, Scotland.

Moxley vs. McGuinness went 17 minutes and 12 seconds. Moxley’s AEW Continental Championship was also on the line during the tournament.
