Former WWE star Joe Gacy has added a major championship to his post-WWE career, capturing the GCW World Championship over Homecoming weekend.
Now competing under the name Joseph Sawyer, the former Wyatt Sicks member defeated Atticus Cogar during GCW Homecoming Weekend 2026 Night 1 on Saturday, August 15. The event took place at the Showboat in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The closing moments saw Sawyer connect with Sister Abigail to secure the victory and championship. However, he did not get the job done entirely on his own, as Drake Wuertz became involved in the match and assisted Sawyer.
Wuertz will be familiar to longtime wrestling fans from his time as an NXT referee and his independent wrestling career under the name Drake Younger. More recently, he has appeared for Juggalo Championship Wrestling as the character Mr. 50s.
Joseph Sawyer Ends Atticus Cogar’s Lengthy GCW Title Reign
The victory makes Sawyer the 30th GCW World Champion in the history of the championship and brings an impressive run for Cogar to an end.
Cogar held the GCW World Championship for 266 days and successfully defended the title on 25 occasions before finally being dethroned by Sawyer in Atlantic City.
Sawyer has maintained a busy wrestling schedule since departing WWE earlier in 2026. In addition to GCW, he has competed for promotions including Wrestling Revolver, ALW, B!P and ICW as he continues establishing the next chapter of his career.
His championship victory also came during an especially active weekend. On Friday, August 14, Sawyer was in Ottawa, Ontario, where he challenged Stu Grayson for the interim MLP Canadian Championship at C*4 Fighting Back 15 from the Preston Event Centre.
Sawyer was among several members of the Wyatt Sicks released by WWE in April. Dexter Lumis, Nikki Cross, Erick Rowan and Bo Dallas also departed the company as part of the same round of releases.
Now, only a matter of months removed from WWE, Sawyer has reached the top of GCW by capturing its biggest championship.
