TNA’s Lethal Lockdown Match, Explained

For the first time in a decade, TNA will be presenting the “Lethal Lockdown” matchup, which was the promotion’s answer to the likes of WWE’s Elimination Chamber and WCW’s WarGames. With it being so long since TNA last put forth their iconic caged bout, there may be some unfamiliarity with the concept of Lethal Lockdown, and may be wondering what exactly it entails. Let’s take a dive into the history of the Lethal Lockdown match, the rules and how the matchup works, and what to expect when TNA’s next premium live event hits the airways in the form of Lockdown 2026.

The Rules Of TNA’s Lethal Lockdown

• Two teams compete against one another in Lethal Lockdown.
• The Lethal Lockdown roof lowers when all wrestlers are inside the ring.

The rules of TNA’s Lethal Lockdown match are pretty simple, especially when you’re familiar with the WarGames and Blood & Guts concepts. Lethal Lockdown features just one ring surrounded by a high-rising steel cage (often a black color, as opposed to red, metallic grey, or otherwise). The match sees two teams facing off with one another, with competitors from each team being entered into the match at regular intervals, thereby giving one team the numbers advantage throughout the duration of the contest, much like with the WarGames match. Throughout TNA’s history, Lethal Lockdown has featured teams of three, four and five.

Once all wrestlers on both teams have entered the field, the cage of Lethal Lockdown is then lowered down to shut the ring off from escapes, dives, and more (though there has been a history of wrestlers’ climbing and dangling from the roof of the structure), with weaponry being dangled down and free for competitors to retrieve and use during the action. The man ends upon the first pinfall or submission, as opposed to any sort of elimination rules.

TNA Legends Have Wrestled Inside Lethal Lockdown During It’s History

• The first Lethal Lockdown was Team Nash vs. Team Jarrett.
• TNA held yearly Lethal Lockdown matches.
• Team Lashley vs. Team EC3 was the last Lethal Lockdown match.

The first ever Lethal Lockdown match occurred all the way back at the inaugural Lockdown PPV in 2005. The concept of the event saw every match surrounded by a Steel Cage, though with different varying rules – one of which was the gang warfare Lethal Lockdown stipulation. Kevin Nash led a team consistenting of BG James, Diamond Dallas Page & Sean Waltman against Jeff Jarrett’s team of The Outlaw and Monty Brown, making the latter the only three-man team in the history of the match.

Lethal Lockdown would make a return on a yearly basis, even being held twice per year in 2009, 2010, and 2013 at non-Lockdown events in One Night Only: Hardcore Justice, Bound For Glory, and No Surrender. Over the years, major names competed inside this match type such as AJ Styles, Scott Steiner, Ric Flair, Sting, Rob Van Dam, Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe, Booker T, Jeff Hardy, Drew McIntyre, Gail Kim, and so many more. However, upon the cancellation of the Lockdown PPV after the 2016 show (with a renewal being scrapped in 2020 due to the pandemic), the Lethal Lockdown match was also put on hold. However, a decade after the last Lethal Lockdown match, it is making a return.

TNA Is Bringing Back Lethal Lockdown In 2026

• TNA’s Lockdown PLE will bring back this gimmick match.
• It will be the first mixed gender Lethal Lockdown match.
• The System will take on a variety of babyfaces.

Back in April of this year, TNA made the big announcement that Lockdown would be making a return as a premium live event – and along with it came the announcement of the Lethal Lockdown gimmick match. In recent months, The System faction has been procuring plenty of enemies across the TNA roster, leading to the revelation that the first Lethal Lockdown match in a decade would be taking place, which will make history in being the second mixed-gender iteration of the contest, with previous matches only consisting of either just men or women aside from the 2016 bout. Eddie Edwards, Brian Myers (and and Edwards being the only wrestlers in the match to have previously competed inside Lethal Lockdown), Bear Bronson and Alisha Edwards will take on Ricky Sosa, Fabian Aichner, KC Navarro and Jada Stone on August 23, 2026.

The rest of Lockdown 2026 will feature the renewal of the concept of every match taking place inside a Steel Cage, giving TNA fans a very unique and different addition to the PLE calendar.
