1. Sam Holloway vs. CJ Valor (w/The Mog Squad). Blake said Holloway has dropped 30 pounds since he joined the ID program. CJ attacked from behind, and we’re underway! We got a bell at 00:12. Sam dove over the ropes onto the Mog Squad. Valor hit a spear. We saw Dorian Van Dux in the VIP lounge. In the ring, Valor was in charge, hitting a splash in the corner. Santi Rivera struck Sam as CJ was distracting the ref.

CJ hit a spinebuster at 3:30. Sam finally hit a suplex, then a running shotgun dropkick at 5:00. Valor hit a powerbomb and a Chaos Theory for a nearfall. Sam knocked two heels from the apron to the floor, then he flipped Max Abrams onto them. Holloway then hit a Choke Bomb for the pin! A big win for Holloway.

Sam Holloway defeated CJ Valor at 6:49/official time 6:37.

2. Cutler James vs. Marcus Mathers. They locked up, and James has a massive height and overall size advantage. Blake talked about Mathers’ “International work.” We saw It’s Gal in the VIP lounge. Blake noted that Marcus has already competed in 800 matches. James tied up Marcus’s left arm on the mat. Mathers hit an enzuigiri. Cutler hit a spear at 2:00. He did a Castagnoli-style Giant Swing, then a spear into the corner. Mathers hit a huracanrana that sent Cutler to the floor at 4:00. [C]

Cutler hit a pop-up European Uppercut. (He really loves that Castagnoli offense!) He hit a short -arm clothesline for a nearfall at 5:30, then another. He hit a Mafia Kick for a nearfall at 7:00. Cutler hit a backbreaker over his knee for a nearfall, then a chinlock on the mat. The crowd rallied for Marcus. Marcus hit a top-rope twisting crossbody block at 8:30, then a running clothesline.

Mathers nailed his corner fadeaway stunner and a superkick, then a moonsault for a nearfall. Marcus nailed his flip dive to the floor. Back in the ring, Marcus hit his heel hook kick to the jaw. He leapt off the second rope, but Cutler caught him and hit another backbreaker over his knee. Cutler hit “Dark Matter” (a release airplane spin) for the pin. This was the best match of Cutler’s career.

Cutler James defeated Marcus Mathers at 10:14.

* As Cutler limped to the back, It’s Gal was shouting at Cutler that he “needs some protein.”

Adriana Rizzo interviewed Cutler James at ringside. She asked if he’s going for the Evolve Men’s Title. He acknowledged he has his eyes on the belt.

* Backstage, PJ Vasa stared into the camera and vowed she’s taking out Laynie Luck next week.

* A vignette aired with Harley Riggins, talking about his Evolve career so far. He’s “better riding solo.”

* Aaron Rourke returns next week!

* Backstage, Alix Brooks was hanging out with Kale Dixon. (They have FINALLY named her!) They were complaining to Foreman Timothy Thatcher. Thatcher told him Dixon needs to put in the hard work, and he can try next week against Chazz “Starboy” Hall. Also, next week will be Brooks Jensen vs. Elijah Holyfield in Evolve’s first-ever lumberjack match! Zena Sterling walked up and wants a match. Thatcher gave her a match next week against Layla Diggs. Zena looked a bit pensive about that!

* Back to the arena, where Sloane Jacobs introduced Nikkita Lyons! We can see Veronica Haven (who has since left the ID program) and Gianni Capri in the VIP lounge.

3. Nikkita Lyons (w/Sloane Jacobs) vs. Thea Hail for the WWE Evolve Women’s Title. Hail attacked at the bell and we’re underway! She hit a Thesz Press and a series of punches. Lyons is taller and choked Thea in the ropes and got a nearfall at 2:00. Hail hit a huracanrana. Lyons threw Hail to the floor at 3:30. [C]

Back from the break, Lyons was in charge in the ring and kept Hail grounded. Lyons hit a Samoan Drop for a nearfall. She got behind Thea and hit some crossface blows. Lyons hit a clothesline for a nearfall. Lyons locked in a Camel Clutch. Lyons missed the splits leg drop at 6:30. She missed a spear into the corner and injured her shoulder. Thea flipped Lyons into a corner, then hit a fisherman’s suplex and a Shining Wizard for a nearfall. Thea went for a hammerlock, but Lyons escaped.

Lyons nailed a roundhouse kick to the skull for a believable nearfall. Lyons hit a second-rope superplex, and they were both down. Capri and Haven came to ringside. Anya Rune appeared, and she threw her invisible magic fireball; they made fun of her for it not working. Rune turned away in disappointment. Two women attacked Capri and Haven. Rune turned around, saw Haven and Capri on the ground, and she thought her magic powers worked! Meanwhile, Thea had Lyons tied up, and Lyons was tapping out! Sloane reached into the ring and raked Thea’s eyes. Lyons then covered Hail for the tainted pin.

Nikkita Lyons defeated Thea Hail to retain the WWE Evolve Women’s Title at 9:59.

* The screen flashed, and we briefly saw Wendy Choo’s face.

Final Thoughts: First, the good — Marcus Mathers is so talented, and he got a highly watchable match out of Cutler James. I figured Cutler was winning, but Marcus sure looked good in defeat. Holloway should be a major player, just based on his size — my Matt Morgan comparison really feels accurate. The main event was alright. It wasn’t bad, but it stayed in first gear. A good Harley Riggins segment to tell us more about him. I also like how Thatcher continues giving us the lineups for shows the next week.

The bad? Anya Rune is so talented, but pretending that she can throw anime fireballs just isn’t working for me. She’s doing her best to make it work, though. This makes me think of WWE getting Shane Helms under contract, seeing his Green Lantern tattoo, and deciding he would be a superhero character. The episode was 49 minutes long.
