Jeff Jarrett has drawn comparisons between the rise of TNA Wrestling and AEW, pointing to the opportunities both promotions have provided while highlighting the depth and international nature of AEW’s current roster.

The wrestling landscape in the United States changed considerably following WWE’s acquisition of WCW in 2001. With WWE emerging from the Monday Night Wars as the dominant promotion, there was room for another company to establish itself as a major alternative.

TNA Wrestling stepped into that position after launching in 2002, helping introduce a new generation of talent to a wider audience. Nearly two decades later, AEW arrived in 2019 and quickly established itself as another major presence in the wrestling industry.

Jarrett has considerable experience with both promotions. As one of the driving forces behind the creation of TNA, he witnessed firsthand how the company provided a platform for wrestlers who had not previously received significant national exposure.

During a new interview with The Sportster’s Adam Barnard, Jarrett explained that while every wrestling roster develops its own identity, he sees similarities in the opportunities created by TNA and AEW.

“Every roster, no matter how you slice and dice it, ends up kind of being different. But one thing that I will say about the AEW roster, it’s super diverse, and there’s a lot of folks that are coming of age and that you get to witness week in, week out, that before AEW started, you might not know this guy. Same thing with TNA, before TNA started, there was no X Division. There was no AJ Styles. You could fill in the blanks and all that kind of stuff. But the old definition of luck, preparation meets opportunity. Guys that have been prepared, they get the opportunity at a TNA or AEW or whatever it may be. Cream always rises to the top. So, yeah, there are similarities there. But, man, when you look at, to me, the AEW diverse roster, the global aspect is very impressive.”

Jarrett specifically referenced AJ Styles and the X Division as examples of how TNA was able to create opportunities that helped wrestlers build greater recognition. Styles would ultimately become one of the defining stars of the promotion, while the X Division became an important part of TNA’s identity.

In Jarrett’s view, AEW has similarly provided wrestlers with a platform to develop in front of a larger audience, with its roster drawing talent from a variety of wrestling backgrounds and countries.

While Jarrett acknowledged that TNA and AEW are different companies from different eras, he believes the opportunity offered to prepared talent is one important connection between the two.
