Championship Decision

Nick Aldis was in the ring and noted that Chelsea Green has a broken orbital bone, and he invited her to the ring. Green came out with a swollen right eye, and the crowd was behind her throughout the segment. Aldis told Green that he spoke to medical, and he can’t let her compete with a “broken eye socket.” Green cut off Aldis and told him not to say what she knows he’s going to say. Aldis said he hated this part of his job, but it is his job, and he asked Green to relinquish her title, which was met with boos and “no” chants.

Green admitted she knew it was too good to be true. She also admitted that she was waiting for the other shoe to drop when she won the ladder match at SummerSlam, but every time something good happens to her, something disastrous happens. She talked about her perception as the comic relief and the perfect opponent for the other girls, but she’s never the champion, never QB1. She told Aldis about all of her sacrifices: Missing weddings and funerals, breaking bones, getting cakes and pies in her face, and having the world laugh at her, but she knew it would be worth it because her title-winning moment would come. She also told Aldis that he should understand because he got his moment at SummerSlam in front of his wife and son. Aldis tried to tell Green that it wasn’t the same, but Green told him that they went out and showed that it didn’t matter what they think. “What matters is what we think.” She said that until someone beats her for the title, it’s hers, and Aldis should understand that.

As Green walked away, Aldis stopped her and said that as a GM, he’s doing the right thing, but as a man, he doesn’t give a damn about what medical says. He told Green that she has 30 days to get her medical situation figured out, and the title is hers until someone takes it from her. Gunther then came out and mocked Green for her “sob story that no one wants to hear about.” He wanted to focus on more important things, like what Aldis did at SummerSlam. Aldis said this should be handled in his office, and Chelsea agreed. Gunther then went after Chelsea, asking her what she did at SummerSlam: Climbed a ladder for the title, then bumped her head on a door frame. He pointed out that he pulled double duty, including making Aldis tap out in front of his family. Gunther asked Aldis why he added Kevin Owens to his match, and Aldis retorted that he technically added Gunther to Owens’ match, and he didn’t get the job done.

Chelsea continued to goad Gunther, who responded that she should do everyone a favor and shut up. Green told Gunther to continue to stroke his fragile male ego and pointed out that the only champion in the ring was her. Gunther wasn’t happy about that and went to confront her until Matt Cardona came in for the save. Gunther mocked Cardona for making his way from catering. He said that he could call Chelsea every slur in the world, and he couldn’t do anything about it. Green tried to calm Cardona down, but he lost his cool after Gunther’s line about a dog listening to its owner. This led to an impromptu match.

Matt Cardona vs. Gunther

This match happened during a commercial break, and both men were still wearing their regular pants, wrestling shirtless. Gunther was mostly dominant, with a powerbomb on the announce desk and on the side apron. Cardona had a hope spot when Gunther was busy talking trash to Chelsea, and Cardona low-blowed Gunther when the ref’s back was turned. He hit a Rough Ryder but only got a nearfall. Gunther caught a Rough Ryder attempt and transitioned it into a powerbomb. He hit another powerbomb and transitioned into a Boston Crab, and Cardona immediately tapped.

The Irresistible Forces came out after the match, and Nia Jax said she got screwed from being at SummerSlam, and she wanted the WWE Championship. She warned Chelsea that she has a history of breaking faces, and as they entered the ring, Tiffany Stratton came out for the save, but the numbers advantage was too much, and she took a leg drop from Jax before her U.S. Title defense, as Chelsea helplessly watched.

New Friend

After a recap of last week’s main event, Charlotte Flair was hugging Alexa Bliss while they were walking backstage. Alexa was happy that Charlotte was nice to Tatum Paxley, but Charlotte clarified that she was nice in the moment. Alexa told Charlotte that she likes Tatum and that she reminds her of herself, and if Charlotte likes her, then she should like Tatum, who is shown in a closet with a picture collage of Charlotte and Alexa. Tatum called it their new locker room, and Charlotte and Alexa pretended to be nice about it as they entered the room.

Cody-Randy showdown set

After a recap of the last two weeks of their feud, Cody Rhodes told Aldis that he wanted a match with Randy Orton. Aldis suggested Sunday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta on Sept. 6. Sami confronted the two and pointed out that whenever Cody wants something, it’s “just say when,” and Orton can come in whenever to get what he wants. However, whenever he asks for a WWE Championship rematch, he can’t get one. Cody snapped at Sami and noted that he used to allow Sami to rant at him, but he’s had enough. He told Sami that he might have felt that he owed him something, but he doesn’t owe him a damn thing, and if Sami wants to do something about it, then he should do it. Sami reminded Cody that, unlike Owens, Roman Reigns, and Brock Lesnar, he beat Cody for the WWE Championship. Cody asked Sami if he could do it again and suggested a match tonight. Sami pointed out that he was hurt, but Aldis enticed Sami with the stipulation that if he won, he would face the winner of CM Punk-Owens. However, Sami continued to point out that he was hurt, but Aldis brushed him off.

United States Championship: Baron Corbin (c) vs. Carmelo Hayes

Melo went after Corbin before the bell rang and took to Corbin early. Corbin later countered a First 48 into a powerbomb and took it Melo on the outside, sending Melo to the timekeeper’s area. He had control through the ad break, and at the end, Melo went to the top rope, but Corbin dumped him into the barricade outside. He hit the End of Days back in the ring for the win.

After the match, Trick Williams came and did his full entrance. That distracted Corbin, allowing Lil Yachty to come in with the “Trick Stick” to attack Corbin from behind. Corbin ran Yachty away, and Trick hit him with the Trick Shot.

Chelsea went to check in on Tiffany backstage, and Tiffany said she wasn’t going to allow Chelsea to get hurt and added that she was OK for her title match later in the night.

No Honor Lost

Before Kevin Owens could speak, CM Punk’s music played, and he told Owens that he wanted Owens to say whatever he was going to say in front of his face because he’s not a coward. Owens called that ironic since he had called him a “fat slob” behind his back before. Punk allowed Owens to talk about their history. Owens called back to 20 years ago when they were in Ring of Honor (he said “independent promotion”) together. Punk was the top guy, and he was someone trying to make a name for himself, but Punk chose to berate him and yell at him in front of everyone in the locker room. Punk asked if he was still holding onto that, but Owens noted that it’s only one reason why he doesn’t like Punk. He said that it was the many things he’s said and done to his friends, and Punk tried to ask which friends. Owens said it wasn’t the three he’s thinking of, and Punk replied that “being hated by losers is the price he pays for not being one of them.”

Owens added that that attitude was one of the reasons he despises him. He said the locker room looks up to him after he’s made amends, but he still doesn’t like him, and he’ll never like him. Owens told Punk that the only reason he’s back is that he had no choice and that he’s the kind of person who also screws himself over. He noted he’s wrestled for 12 years before his injury and talked about his accomplishments, including main eventing WrestleMania against Stone Cold Steve Austin. Punk told Owens that he’s happy for him but asked Owens if he would have been afforded those opportunities if he wasn’t there. Owens told Punk to say the same things he said 20 years ago: That he’s a fat slob or a fan on the wrong side of the guardrail.

Punk asked if that was what Owens thought of himself. He noted that he called out Oba Femi, but he got “endometriosis” instead. He told Owens that he saw a tough guy and someone smarter than him because he speaks two languages, but he said he was stupid for avoiding the work and not trying to be 1% better every day. He said he’s not a shapeshifter. He evolved, and if Owens did half the work that he did, then he would have avoided the Goldberg spear and not lost the title. Owens said there would be no chance he would be like Punk because he spent his whole career not being like him. He told Punk that he probably goes home and hates what he sees, but he loves himself. He told Punk that he’s the same person he yelled at 20 years ago, and this fat indie loser is standing in the ring and will face him for the WWE Championship. He pointed out that being more like Punk wouldn’t have helped him because he couldn’t avoid Roman Reigns’ spear to lose the World Heavyweight Title.

Punk told Owens that he sees himself in Owens: Someone who’s stubborn, loud, and always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room. He added that Owens is the same guy from 20 years ago. Owens asked Punk if it bothered him that he never asked for advice. He said that he regretted not punching Punk in the face in the locker room. After Punk told him to do it now, Owens said that Punk would have ruined his career if he did it then, but he’s waited 20 years, and he can wait seven days to do it and win the WWE Championship. Punk told Owens that he’s a greenhorn who can get away with speaking to him disrespectfully, but next week, he’ll put his fatass to sleep.

Finn Balor was in Aldis’ office, and Gunther interrupted. He pretended not to see Balor, who called Gunther a “condescending prick” and said that he wanted to tell Aldis that he’d do anything to get another chance at the WWE Title, including facing Gunther.

WWE Tag Team Championship: R-Truth & Damian Priest (c) vs. War Raiders vs. MFT

There was a lot of chaos to start the match, and after the ad break, Talla Tonga chokeslammed Truth and Priest off the second rope. Ivar hit a splash on Talla. Tama and Erik went at it, and the War Raiders hit a pop-up powerslam for a nearfall. Ivar and Priest worked together to hit a chokeslam on Talla. The chaos continued in and outside of the ring. R-Truth had some John Cena spots, including the Five Moves of Doom. Tama raked Truth’s eyes on the AA attempt, and the MFTs hit Brother’s Keeper (an assisted powerbomb) to win the tag titles.

Women’s United States Championship: Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Jacy Jayne

Jacy targeted Tiffany’s midsection throughout the match. Chelsea Green came in during the picture-in-picture break, and Tiffany nearly won the match after a handspring stunner and rolling senton into the Prettiest Moonsault Ever, but Jacy had her knees up. Tiffany landed a big knee strike and tried to go for the PME, but Fatal Influence surrounded Chelsea, so Tiffany hit a crossbody on them. As she was getting back in the ring, Jacy hit Rolling Encore to win the title. Chelsea was shocked and tended to Tiffany, as an emotional Jacy celebrated with the rest of Fatal Influence, with pyro going off.

Jade Cargill and the Baddies were backstage, saying that it doesn’t matter if “tater tot” joined Charlotte and Alexa because they’ll still handle them.

While Sami Zayn made his entrance, Randy Orton attacked Cody Rhodes from behind. They fought around the Garden, as Sami tried to get the ref to do something about it. Cody was pinned between the steel steps, but Cody low-blowed Orton. Cody was prevented from using the chair on Orton, as he continued to fight him with the show going off air.
