Should Penta Upset Roman Reigns For The World Heavyweight Title?

Penta is the brand new number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship, with him set to challenge Roman Reigns on a special episode of Monday Night RAW at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City on September 14. With Reigns’ time as champion going strong, defeating the likes of CM Punk, Jacob Fatu & Seth Rollins thus far, he is predicted to stand tall as champion. Upsets happen very infrequently in WWE’s top title scenes, but could it be time for a major shock and title change? Penta has been riding a strong wave of momentum, so is there an argument for him to overcome one of WWE’s biggest stars?

Penta Has Potential To Be A WWE Main Eventer

• Penta has a strong connection to WWE’s audience.
• He is already arguably WWE’s best luchador ever after Rey Mysterio.
• Penta winning a world title would be a welcome moment in Mexico.

Ever since his debut in WWE, Penta has hit the high notes on every level. His in-ring performances are consistently strong, his connection to the audience as a babyface is natural and infectious, and his overall presentation has been great on the part of WWE. Based upon his levels of popularity alone, it is safe to say that he has the potential to break into WWE’s main event scene. His reign as Intercontinental Champion proved his ability to carry a full division on his back, increase the prestige of a championship, and elevate others around him.

He may have only been in WWE for a year and a half, but he is already one of the greatest luchadors in WWE history, arguably only second to the legendary Rey Mysterio. Over the years, WWE has tried and failed to generate new lucha libre stars, with Penta being one of the few to have real, consistent success. Fans have gotten behind Penta in WWE’s luchadors contenders tournament to determine Roman Reigns’ next World Heavyweight Championship challenger, with him overcoming Rey Fenix in the finals to earn a shot at the gold. This has opened up the conversation of whether or not WWE should take a trip down a wild route and crowd Penta in a major upset.

Roman Reigns’ World Heavyweight Title Reign Isn’t Over Yet

• Reigns has a long time to go before losing the World Heavyweight Title.
• He is primed for a feud with LA Knight.
• Oba Femi should dethrone Roman Reigns down the line.

Roman Reigns defeated CM Punk in the main event of WrestleMania 42 to become the brand new World Heavyweight Champion, kickstarting a reign that he vowed would not be a part-time one… only to embark on a part-time schedule. Since then, he’s defeated both Jacob Fatu and Seth Rollins with his gold on the line, having pretty strong matches in the process. With feuds against the likes of LA Knight, Solo Sikoa, and Royce Keys potentially in the offing, and with Reigns’ run with the gold not feeling complete, it is both unlikely for him to lose the belt and the wrong decision.

Reigns is once again being presented as a dominant star, so elevating a younger name with his loss in the form of Oba Femi should be the only real option that WWE takes. Penta would get hugely over by beating Reigns, and his win would be a mega moment in Mexico, but this is not the right time for an upset.

Penta Should Lose To Roman Reigns… But Win A World Title Later

• Penta can be elevated in a loss to Roman Reigns.
• Losing in his first attempt can lead to a redemption arc in WWE for Penta.
• He should chase a WWE World Title and win next year.

Penta can put in a tremendous performance on Monday Night RAW in Mexico, but he should come up short. He can have a strong match with Reigns, coming close to a win at numerous points, but losing the match would result in a better long term arc (so long as WWE follows up on it). For a babyface like Penta, losing in his first ever world championship match in WWE can set him up for a much stronger journey to a world title.

Beating Roman Reigns or Oba Femi might be out of the question, but losing to Reigns and embarking on a redemption arc over the next year or so can lead him to beating the likes of Gunther, CM Punk, Sami Zayn, or someone else over in the WWE Championship scene, being handed a crowd-pleasing victory the next time WWE heads to Mexico (perhaps even for a PLE). There is every chance that Penta loses to Reigns and receives no follow-up, but if WWE have any sense then they’ll use this defeat to build Penta into a main eventer.
