AAA Ola de Calor results: Moore’s live review of Penta, Rey Fenix, and Dragon Lee vs. Daga, Angel, and Berto, Mini Vikingo vs. Nathan Frazer vs. Jack Cartwheel for a shot at the AAA Cruiserweight Title

Arrival shots were shown of Dragon Lee, Pentagon Jr, Rey Fenix, El Grande Americano, Dominik Mysterio, and Dorian Roldan…

Entrances for the opening match took place…

1. Joaquin Wilde, Cruz Del Toro, Lince Dorado, and Mini Abismo Negro vs. Axiom, Mr. Iguana, Noisy Boy, and Mascarita Sagrada. Wilde and Axiom started the match. Axiom dominated with rushing strikes. Toro and Noisy Boy tagged in, with Noisy hitting Toro with a huracanrana and doing a superhero pose. The LWO team used quick tags to cut the ring in half on Noisy. Mascarita Sagrada tagged in, which popped JBL.

Sagrada took down Lince. Iguana tagged in and hit Lince with a springboard armdrag. Axiom’s team was dumped to ringside. The LWO team took turns hitting dives and flip dives on the pile of wrestlers at ringside. The LWO team cut the ring in half on Iguana. Abismo hit Iguana with power moves. Rey and JBL kept joking about how Abismo doesn’t look like a Mini. Rey said if Abismo was a mini, then he could be a mini.

Iguana dodged Lince’s Shooting Star Press and tagged in Sagrada. Sagrada chopped down Toro and sent him to ringside. Sagrada hit Wilde with an impressive Suplex. Sagrada hit Lince with a springboard shoulder tackle. Abismo caught Sagrada out of the air, but Sagrada adjusted into a huracanrana. Axiom hit Wilde with a dive. Noisy hit the pile of wrestlers with a Corkscrew Asai Moonsault after hitting Toro with a Poisonrana.

Sagrada hit Abismo at ringside with an impressive tightrope flip dive. Iguana avoided Cruz’s Phoenix Splash. Iguana hit Cruz with the Iguana plushie and then followed up with a hanging bulldog for the victory.

Mr. Iguana, Axiom, Mascarita Sagrada, and Noisy Boy defeated Cruz Del Toro, Joaquin Wilde, Mini Abismo Negro, and Lince Dorado via pinfall in 9:47. 

John’s Thoughts: A fun opener. I didn’t think they needed 8 wrestlers as there wasn’t enough time to showcase all of them. I would have pulled out Iguana and Lince Dorado to allow more luchadores to get some shine, especially Noisy Boy, who we barely got to see, but was very impressive during the time he did get. Like JBL, I have always been a fan of Mascarita Sagrada going back to the El Torito days in WWE. I feel like he shouldn’t be relegated to just matches in the minis division, as he’s so smooth in the ring.

An ad aired for AAA Triplemania…

AAA Reina de Reinas Champion Lady Flammer made her entrance to watch the upcoming match. A lady named Adelicious made her entrance. Lady Shani was out next…

2. Gauntlet Match to earn a Reina de Reinas Championship Match at Triplemania. The first match of the gauntlet was Adelicious vs. Lady Shani. Both women started the match with a stalemate. Shana got a takedown with a shoulder tackle. Adelicious did a matrix dodge and hit Shani with a huracanrana. Both women traded rapid rollups. Shani put the boots to Adelicious in the corner. Shani hit Adelicious with a Broski Boot.

Adelicious did a bunch of random flips and then hit Shani with a tackle and dropkick. Shani avoided a 450 and pinned Adelicious in around 3:00 after a body scissors roll.

Lady Shani vs. Thea Hail was the next part of the gauntlet. Thea Hail went for some quick pins early on. Hail hit Shani with a huracanrana and a suicide dive at ringside. Hail got a two count on Shani. Shani tripped up Hail and hit her with a basement dropkick for a nearfall. Shani put Hail in a Boston Crab, converted to a cradle swing. JBL and Corey Graves gave their best wishes to Konnan, hoping to see him back in AAA soon.

Hail stretched Shani with an armbar over the top rope. Shani went for the body scissors pin again, but Hail rolled her up for the pin at around 7:10.

Thea Hail vs. La Catalina was the next part of the gauntlet. Catalina used to wrestle under a mask in NXT and WWE’s main roster. Catalina rallied with strikes early. Hail turned the tables with a springboard move and methodical offense. Catalina turned the tide with a diving crossbody. Catalina gave Hail a running knee to the back of the neck. Catalina put Hail in an Electric Chair. Hail came back with a shoulder breaker. Catalina shoved Hail into the buckle to break a Kimura. Hail put Catalina in a Kimura. Catalina converted the position into a Jackknife pin for the pinfall at around 11:40.

La Catalina vs. La Hiedra was the final part of the Gauntlet. The commentators noted that Hiedra is in the same faction as Flammer, Las Toxicas. Hiedra focused on the left arm that Thea Hail worked on. La Hiedra looked perplexed seeing that her stablemate might face her for the title. Hiedra worked on Catalina with methodical offense. Catalina dumped Hiedra to ringside and hit her with a high Crossbody Block. Hiedra slapped Catalina on the top rope. Hiedra hit Catalina with Iconoclasm.

Catalina rolled up Hiedra for a two count. Hiedra hit Catalina with a Wheelbarrow Slam for a good nearfall. Hiedra argued that the ref gave her a slow count. Hiedra tried to hit Catalina with a belt shot, but the referee stopped her. Catalina rolled up Hiedra for a good nearfall. While the referee was distracted doing something in the corner, Hiedra tried to hold Catalina in place for a belt shot by Lady Flammer, but Catalina ducked, causing Flammer to accidentally (?) hit Hiedra. Catalina recovered and hit Hiedra with a Knee Plus for the win.

La Catalina defeated La Hiedra via pinfall in 17:33 of total match time to win the Gauntlet Match and earn a shot at the Reina de Reinas Championship at Triplemania. 

Separate shots of the War Raiders and Los Americanos were shown as they were warming up backstage…

John’s Thoughts: I’m not up to date on the AAA storylines, so I’m not too familiar with a lot of the story dynamics at play. That said, it was a pretty fun gauntlet, particularly the 2nd half of the total gauntlet. I really like how La Catalina has reinvented herself since getting released by WWE. The best thing she ever did was drop the mask because she had a bit of a generic lucha look during her first WWE run. She sells very well, and her expressions are very emotive and a strength of hers. I was actually shocked to see she’s only 26, meaning she was very young when she was in WWE. I actually look forward to the Catalina vs. Lady Flammer match, and this match looked like it was planting seeds of dissent within the heel Las Toxicas faction.

Entrances for the tag team title match took place…

3. “The War Raiders” Erik and Ivar vs. “Los Americanos” Rayo and Bravo for the AAA Tag Team Championsip. Erik and Rayo started the match with Rayo landing a dropkick on Erik. Bravo and Ivar tagged, leading to the War Raiders cutting the ring in half on Bravo a bit. Bravo hit Erik with theatrical strikes. Bravo slapped his ass to mock Ivar. The Americanos did a wishbone spot on Erik into the ring post. The Raiders used tags again to cut the ring in half on Rayo.

Rayo went for a Sunset Flip that was blocked, but Rayo avoided a Banzai Drop. JBL noted that Ivar has more ass than a donkey. Erik slammed Rayo for a nearfall. Rayo did a backflip to land on his feet on a suplex, which allowed him to tag in Bravo. Bravo peppered Erik with strikes and a flying clothesline. Bravo hit Erik with a body slam. Bravo hit Erik with a crossbody. Bravo hit Ivar with a Gamengiri on the top rope.

Bravo hit Ivar with a Frankensteiner. Rayo tagged in and barely hit a Swanton Bomb on Ivar for a nearfall. Ivar took out Rayo with one of his impressive Crescent Kicks. Erik suplexed Ivar on Bravo in the corner. Erik got a two count on Bravo. Rayo blind tagged in. Bravo took down Ivar with a DDT. Rayo hit Erik with a finger break spot. Bravo hit Erik with Bop and Bang. The Americanos hit Erik with a Shoulder Tackle legsweep combo. Ivar broke up Bravo’s pin.

The Americanos hit Erik with Dragon Ball punches. Bravo dodged Ivar’s Bronco Buster. Los Americanos both lifted Ivar. Erik dragged Rayo to ringside . Bravo hit Ivar with an impressive Helicopter Spin Michinoku Driver. Bravo went for a headbutt, but Ivar’s large body blocked the fact that he was holding the championship belt. Bravo gave the tag championship belt a top rope headbutt, which led to a pinfall win by Ivar over the knocked-out Bravo.

The War Raiders defeated Los Americanos via pinfall in 10:19 to retain the AAA Tag Team Championships. 

Erik got close to the camera and said, “By any means necessary”…

John’s Thoughts: A good tag team match between two teams that work against what their sizes are, War Raiders being very agile while the Americanos having their British Strong Style. It’s always fun to see Big Strong Boy Bravo (Tyler Bate) do his clean feats of strength. I would have liked to see these teams go five minutes more, and that’s what this finish seems to set up. The finish was clever as they utilized Ivar’s large body and creative camera angles to hide the belt shot.

Chris Carter was “already in the ring”. El Carnicero got a cinematic and slasher villain-style entrance…

4. El Carnicero vs. Chris Carter. Carnicero destroyed Carter. Carnicero press-slammed poor Chris from the ring to ringside. Carnicero tossed Chris into the ring post. Carnicero deadlifted Carter into a chokeslam. The referee made Carnicero break a choke, but Carnicero wouldn’t stop, and Carter couldn’t defend himself, leading to a ref stoppage.

El Carnicero defeated Chris Carter via apparent ref stoppage in 2:24.

Carnicero continued to beat up Carter. Dave the Clown and Murder Clown ran out to break the mandible claw that Carnicero gave Carter. Dave and Murder had the advantage, but Carnicero fought out of the corner and put the boots to Dave and Murder. Psycho Clown ran out and pummeled Carnicero with Kendo Stick strikes. Psycho dumped Carnicero to ringside, but Carnicero landed on his feet. Psycho took the mic and challenged Carnicero to a Mexican Street Fight at Triplemania…

John’s Thoughts: I really love me an old school squash match. I feel like WWE has underutilized this match style, as I feel like local enhancement talent really adds something to the build of a future star, especially a monster star. El Carnicero is WWE NIL Prospect Drake Morreaux given a monster gimmick that has him look like a Southern version of Luchasaurus. So far I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen from this monster push. It helps that the head booker of the show is one of the greatest big men in all of professional wrestling, The Undertaker, so I can see this being a personal project of his.

Entrances for the next match took place…

5. Mini Vikingo vs. Jack Cartwheel vs. Nathan Frazer for a shot at the AAA Cruiserweight Championship. Cartwheel got a double crucifix rollup for a two count. Cartwheel dumped Frazer to ringside. Vikingo rolled up Cartwheel for a nearfall. Cartwheel and Vikingo had a stalemate after showing off a bunch of flips. Vikingo dumped Cartwheel to ringside to leave him alone with Frazer. Frazer took down Vikingo with a leg lariat. Rey noted that Frazer is probably the most experience and JBL yelled that Mini Vikingo is a teenager.

Cartwheel did a Cartwheel on Vikingo into a lariat on Frazer. Cartwheel took down Vikingo with a dropkick and got two counts on both opponents. Vikingo hit Frazer with a spin kick and gamengiri. Vikingo hit Frazer with a slingshot Frog Splash for a nearfall. Vikingo dumped both opponents to ringside. Vikingo hit both opponents with a Corkscrew Flip Dive. Vikingo and Cartwheel traded strong style chops at ringside.

Cartwheel blocked an Irish Whip with a cartwheel. Frazer took out Vikingo with a clothesline. Frazer gave Cartwheel a Spanish Fly off the steel steps. Frazer and Mini traded kicks with Frazer winning the exchange. Frazer hit Mini with an impressive Tightrope Inverted Spanish Fly for a nearfall. Cartwheel hit Frazer with a delayed sweep and slingshot flip. Cartwheel hit Frazer with a Crucifix Driver for a nearfall. Cartwheel hit Mini with an elevated stomp for a nearfall.

Frazer rolled up Cartwheel for a nearfall. Cartwheel hit Frazer with an impressive Springboard Power Bomb. Vikingo hit Cartwheel with a Super Crucifix Driver for a two count. Mini gave both opponents Meteoras in opposite corners. Frazer used a kick to dump Mini over the top rope to ringside. Cartwheel hit Frazer with an Eddy Gordo Waterfall Kick. Cartwheel hit Mini with a Corkscrew Moonsault at ringside.

Frazer dropkicked Cartwheel into the steel steps. Frazer hit both opponents with a Flip Dive. Frazer hit Cartwheel with a frog splash for a good nearfall. Cartwheel used a Cartwheel dodge and hit Frazer with a Deadlift German Suplex for a nearfall. Mini hit Frazer with a double stomp while on Jack’s shoulders. Vikingo kicked Jack to cause him to fall on Frazer for a nearfall. Graves noted that this match was so good that the fans should be chanting Fight Forever (The fans are oddly tame for this match).

All three men traded fighting spirit hands in the center of the ring. Cartwheel used a cartwheel to dump Mini to ringside. He then superkicked Nathan to ringside. Jack hit both opponents with a Flip Dive to ringside. Frazer hit Jack with a Superplex and Final Cut combo for a nearfall. Mini hit Frazer with a Super Corkscrew Spanish Fly. Jack and Mini brawled to the top rope. Mini shoved Jack away. Jack rolled up Nathan for a nearfall.

Vikingo did a flip, but Jack superkicked him out of the air. Jack hit Mini with a dive, and Frazer broke up Jack’s pin for a good nearfall. Frazer hit Jack with a Flatliner. Jack avoided a Phoenix Splash. Mini hit Nathan with a 630. Jack broke up Mini’s pin with a slingshot move. The bell then rang out of nowhere to end the match. Everyone seemed confused.

Mini Vikingo vs. Jack Cartwheel vs. Nathan Frazer in a Triple Threat for a shot at the AAA Cruiserweight Championship ended in a 20-minute time-limit draw. 

Rey said he’s disappointed and wants the match to continue (aren’t you the authority figure, Rey?) The ring announcer clarified that the match ended in a 20-minute time-limit draw.

AAA Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix made his entrance. Fenix led the crowd in a “this is lucha” chant. Rey talked about how he has matches lined up for WWE’s Mexico tour and at AAA Triplemania. Fenix said he doesn’t want to face any one of the great wrestlers in the ring, but he wants to face all three at the same time. Fenix said it will be him vs. Mini Vikingo vs. Jack Cartwheel vs. Nathan Frazer in a four-way for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship at Triplemania. All three men in the ring shook hands to end the segment…

John’s Thoughts: Amazing match that I wished went longer. Graves talked about it, and it was odd that the crowd was very tame for this very fun match. For three guys who are well known for going a mile a minute, they actually slowed down a bit to allow their amazing spots to stand out better. Mini Vikingo is something else. The dude is an actual child who’s been wrestling in AAA since he was 13 or 14 (he’s thankfully 18 now. Is he even out of High School? WWE did have Thea Hail still wrestle while she was in high school). I’ve been a huge fan of Jack Cartwheel due to seeing him wrestle as a regular at the Hoodslam promotion in Oakland, California. The guy has potential to be a top aerial star in WWE. The one thing that used to annoy me about him is that he would shoehorn in these bad comedy cartwheel spots into his matches (and that’s bad comedy in a comedy promotion, Hoodslam). I actually liked his cartwheel spots here as they were very creative and practical.

6. Damian Priest vs. El Fiscal vs. El Hijo Del Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. La Parka in a four-way for the vacant AAA Latin American Championship. The smaller wrestlers dumped Priest away so they could exchange rapid strikes and pin attempts. Priest came back in and took out Wagner with a Crossbody after putting Parka in an Old School. Priest took out all three opponents with kicks. Wagner dumped Fiscal to ringside. Wagner gave Priest chops. Priest took down Wagner with a right hook. Wagner hit Priest out of the air with a superkick and followed up with a Brainbuster.

Wagner used a dropkick to dump Parka to ringside. Wagner hit Fiscal with a Cannonball. Wagner hit Priest with a Frog Splash for a nearfall. Wagner took off the elbow pad, but was taken down by Fiscal’s lariat. Fiscal gave Priest a body slam. Fiscal hit Wagner with a diving crossbody. Parka broke up Fiscal’s pin. Parka hit Fiscal with an Exploder, hit Wagner with a Suicide Dive, and hit Priest with a dive to ringside.

Parka hit Wagner with Magnum and a Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall. The wrestlers took turns alternating signature strikes, to leave all four men lying for a moment of respite. Fiscal gave Priest strikes and fired him up. Wagner cut in with a superkick on Fiscal. Parka hit Wagner with a Super Spanish Fly. Fiscal rolled up Parka for a nearfall. Fiscal dumped Parka to ringside. Priest hit Fiscal out of the air with a hook. Priest hit Fiscal with Razor’s Edge.

Priest did the Razor pose and hit Wagner with a Razor’s Edge. Priest hit Fiscal with South of Heaven. Parka broke up Priest’s pin with a dive. Parka hit Fiscal with a Bonebreaker (Death Valley Jackhammer) for the victory.

La Parka defeated El Fiscal, Damian Priest, and El Hijo Del Dr. Wagner Jr via pinfall in 9:22 to win the vacant AAA Latin American Championship. 

La Parka danced with a random kid after the match (a family member?)…

John’s Thoughts: A good match, but it felt a bit like a buffer coming off the extremely hot time limit draw match.

Shots were shown of Grayson Waller, Cruz Montana (Mike Santana), Zilla Fatu, and Tony D’Angelo, who were arriving at the arena for NXT Heatwave after AAA’s Heatwave (Oka de Calor) show…

AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio made his entrance. WWE backstage interviewer Andrea Bazarte replaced Rey on commentary to provide translations for the English-speaking audience. Rey hyped up Triplemania.  Rey introduced the contract signing for the AAA Championship match at Triplemania, Dominik Mysterio vs. El Grande Americano. Dominik Mysterio and Dorian Roldan made their entrance. Dorian took the mic and tried to argue his way to get Omos’s suspension lifted.

Rey wasn’t budging. Dominik tried to get words in, but Dorian cut him off like a lawyer. Dorian then tried to get Omos’s suspension lifted, which Rey wouldn’t do. El Grande Americano made his entrance. Rey let Grande get some words in before the contract signing. Grande soaked in ole chants. Grande called Dom “Dumbanik”. Grande said Dom has been calling himself King of the Luchadores as champion, but at Triplemania in Mexico, City, in Grande’s home with Grande’s people, Dom will have a chance to prove he’s the King.

Grande signed the contract. Dom said he won’t sign the contract unless Rey lifts the suspension on Omos. Rey said he won’t lift the suspension and would strip Dom of the title belt if Dom doesn’t sign. Grande said he doesn’t want to win the title like that and instead have a battle in front of his people. Rey refused to lift the suspension still. Grande asked for a fight right here, right now from Dom.

Omos stood up in the crowd in a formal suit. Rey Mysterio called for security and said that Omos is still suspended. Omos pulled out a ticket and said he’s a paying fan. Rey teased going into the ring, but instead beat up the poor fan Omos with a microphone. Rey kept giving Omos a hand, with Grande holding him back. Dom beat up Rey at ringside for beating up that fan.

Dom then beat up Grande with a steel chair. Rey took a mic and said that Dom was right in that the suspension wasn’t right. Dom said if Rey wants to get back in AAA, he has to go through Rey. Rey booked Rey vs. Omos at Triplemania. He said that if Omos wins, he’s back in AAA, and if he loses, he’ll be banned from AAA forever. Dom then signed the contract for his match against Grande at Triplemania…

John’s Thoughts: Someone arrest that authority figure for beating up that extremely tall fan in the front row! El Grande Americano does have a former world champion friend who would cover Rey’s bail, though, so that’s a good perk. That aside, I liked that this was productive on multiple fronts, being your usual contract signing while also setting up the size differential match between Rey and Omos. One thing I’m liking from Undertaker’s and Jeremy Borash’s booking is that they’re doing a lot of some reliable old-school pro wrestling tropes, such as squash matches. I also liked them using the good ol’ “I’m just a fan in the front row” gimmick with Omos.

Entrances for the main event took place…

John’s Thoughts: Small little side note. I’m really happy that Daga discovered himself and found a persona that has finally clicked. For years, despite having the in-ring ability of Bryan Danielson, he’s been a net negative in terms of mic work and look. He was always looking clean-cut and always seemed nervous on the mic. Lucha Underground gave him a giant ass sword,  which made him look like a giant ass idiot. TNA gave him an off-putting nepotism push because he was married to the top star of the promotion at the time (Tessa Blanchard). These days he’s gritty’d up the look and seems way more confident on the mic, so I’m happy for him.

7. “Los Perros del Mal” Daga, Angel Garza, and Humberto Carrillo (w/Karmen Petrovic) vs. Dragon Lee, Penta, and Fenix. Fenix and Berto started the match at a stalemate. Daga and Angel tagged in to give his team the numbers advantage to cut the ring in half on Fenix. Karmen got some cheap shots in with his karate while the referee was distracted. The Perros dominated for a few minutes. Fenix fought out of the corner finally and tagged in his brother Penta, who cleaned house.

Dragon hit Angel with a Hesitation Dropkick. Karmen put Angel’s leg on the bottom rope for the break. Dragon gave Angel a superkick. Dragon gave Angel a wrecking ball kick in the corner. Angel escaped a Styles Clash from Dragon with Daga’s help. Penta tagged in and hyped up the crowd. Penta and Daga traded chops. Penta and Daga took each other out with high kicks. Fenix and Berto tagged in. Berto turned Fenix inside-out with a springboard leg lariat.

Fenix caught Berto with a Rolling Cutter. Angel and Dragon traded strong style in the middle of the ring. Angel hit Dragon with a roundhouse and Gory Knee Strike. Dragon hit Angel with a double stomp. The wrestlers all alternated signature strikes. Berto ducked Fenix’s Savate Kick and hit him with a Power Bomb for a nearfall. Fenix hit Berto with a rolling Victory Roll for a nearfall. Rey and Dragon hit Angel and Daga with flip dives.

Fenix used boots to block Berto’s dive. Fenix hit Berto with the Mexican Kinniku Buster (Black Fire Driver) for the victory.

Fenix, Penta, and Dragon Lee defeated Berto, Angel, and Daga via pinfall in 11:51.

The heels put the boots to close the show…

John’s Thoughts: This was a fine enough show-closing main event, but it felt a bit like filler. It was your usual all-star TV main event. I’ve let it be known that I’ve never liked the Lucha Bros as a pair, as both men dumb their exquisite styles down in order to be a standard spot-heavy tag team. WWE has things right with Fenix and Pentagon as singles wrestlers, and I want it to stay that way (I really hope we get Fenix out of the cruiserweight division down the road too, as he can have amazing brawls with larger wrestlers. I wouldn’t mind if they run back Fenix vs. El Mesias or Fenix vs. Cruz Montana sooner or later).

What was a net positive in the main event was Rey Fenix getting another clean win. Things were looking scary for Fenix’s WWE career when they had him trapped in the WWE YouTube show void. Now he’s having an extremely entertaining run, putting on great matches on Raw, Smackdown, NXT, and AAA. Keep this up! I would still recommend you guys watch All In for a higher-stakes show, but this would be a good show to keep in your pocket and watch tomorrow if you have the time. Definitely go out of your way to check out that Cartwheel vs. M. Vikingo vs. Nathan Frazer match, as that match was intelligently paced and wonderful. Going back to the Americano vs. Americano feud shows that AAA is finally telling stories instead of just being exhibition shows.
