AAW Pro “Unbreakable” results: Vetter’s review of Joe Alonzo, Josh Bishop, and Donovan Marecelous vs. Rich Swann and The Hellhounds in a cage match, Maggie Lee vs. Harley Hudson for the AAW Women’s Title

As I noted in my reviews from their prior events, this is their new home, as the Berwyn Eagles Club (their long-time home for two decades!) opted to no longer host wrestling shows.

It is dark in the room, but the ring is lit okay. The crowd is perhaps 250. The ring is pushed up against a stage, and fans sit on the other three sides of the ring. Tyler Volz and Kevin Kellum provided commentary.

* As per usual, they mute the entrance music due to copyright concerns. I get it, but it sure is distracting.

* We’re opening with a six-man scramble, including a guy I hadn’t seen before.

1. Ace Perry vs. Nate Kobain vs. Darren Fly vs. Thomas Heim vs. Sean Logan vs. Bruss Hamilton vs. Solomon Tupu vs. Brendan Balling in an eight-man scramble. Perry still dresses and looks like 2003-era Matt Hardy. Fly and Kobain are “Twist and Flip” teammates, so they should have the advantage, right?  Bolling has curly blond hair and looks like 2008-era Kenny Omega. The big guys Bruss and Tupu were alone in the ring, and the crowd chanted, “Beef!” The scrawny Ace got between them and hit some blows.

Tupu hit a Samoan Drop on Heim at 2:30. Twist and Flip hit some team moves on Tupu. Logan hit a plancha. Fly hit a flip dive to the floor. Kobain hit a top-rope moonsault onto everyone on the floor. Brendan Bolling ran off the stage (next to the ring) and hit a flip dive onto everyone. In the ring, we had two simultaneous Tower of Dooms, with Tupu and Bruss on the bottom of each tower. Those two charged at each other at 6:30. They hit stereo crossbody blocks, and both rolled to the floor.

Ace hit a superkick, and he dove through the ropes onto Brendan. Ace hit a slingshot senton back into the ring. Logan hit a Falcon Arrow at 8:00. Fly hit a Sliced Bread out of the corner. Heim hit a powerbomb on Fly. The tiny Koban hit a Dragon Suplex. Brendan hit a Canadian Destroyer! Heim hit an F5 on Brendan. Heim rolled up Kobain with a handful of tights for the pin! Some fun action.

Thomas Heim defeated Ace Perry, Nate Kobain, Darren Fly, Sean Logan, Bruss Hamilton, Solomon Tupu, and Brendan Bolling at 10:02.

* Joe Alonzo, Joshua Bishop and Donovan Marcellus were outside and talked about their match later tonight. The young kid, Stevie (perhaps age eight) was with them. I think he had a cigarette in his mouth! For good measure, Stevie dropped an ‘F-bomb.’

* Back to the venue, John E. Bravo introduced his latest signee … Sierra! The commentators were shocked by this news. She stormed to the ring and said she didn’t agree to anything. I always compare Sierra to Dani Luna; she’s a thick powerhouse.

2. Sierra vs. Blair Onyx. Blair ran into the ring and hit a Thesz Press and some punches. They went to the floor, where Blair hit some chops. They fought up onto a bar! Sierra hit a stunner; Blair leaned backwards but got back up in a creepy manner. They got back into the ring at 3:00, where Sierra hit a flying knee for a nearfall. Sierra applied a Cobra Clutch on the mat, and Blair frantically tapped out! That was shockingly short.

Sierra defeated Blair Onyx at 4:11.

* Joe Alonzo came to the ring, holding his AAW Heavyweight Title. The crowd loudly booed him. He whined that TNA has a show tomorrow (the Lockdown pay-per-view!) and he hasn’t been invited to participate. Some familiar music played! Santino Marella appeared on the screen. Santino told Alonzo he is invited to take on the Home Town Man in a dark match on Sunday. If he wins, he gets a TNA contract. (Alonzo reportedly did win, even though I haven’t seen footage of it.) Alonzo rolled to the floor and attacked a fan wearing a mask and beat him up. The commentators agreed that was not the Home Town Man.

3) Angel of Death vs. Joey “Jet” Avalon. AOD hit a hard clothesline early on. Avalon hit a back suplex. AOD hit a diving back elbow. Avalon hit a Claymore Kick and got the pin. It was shockingly short.

Joey “Jet” Avalon defeated Angel of Death at 2:16.

* Ryan Matthias spoke backstage. He is ready for his match tonight. He vowed he’s winning a title tonight! I have always said Ryan looks a lot like a long-haired Peter Avalon in the early AEW days.

4. “J-Rod” Jessica Roden and Sophia Rose vs. Heather Reckless and Rory Shield. J-Rod was on the American Gladiators show, and she is so much taller and stronger than either opponent. All four brawled, and we finally got a bell at 00:27. Reckless hit a basement dropkick in the corner for a nearfall on Rose. J-Rod and Rory got in and locked up, and Roden easily knocked Shield to the mat. Rory hit an armdrag. They hit the double hair-mare faceplant at 2:00.

Rose hit a stunner on Rory for a nearfall. She mounted Shield and repeatedly punched her. J-Rod got back in and choked Rory in the ropes. Rory tried a crossbody block; J-Rod caught her, but Shield turned it into a DDT at 4:00. Heather got a hot tag, and she hit some forearm strikes on each opponent. Rose accidentally superkicked J-Rod! Heather hit a splash on Rose’s knee for a nearfall. Rory missed a senton.

J-Rod tagged back in. Rory tied her in a Muta Lock, but Rose made the save. J-Rod scooped up both women and hit a double Samoan Drop at 6:30! She covered Shield for a nearfall. Rose went for a moonsault but landed on J-Rod’s knees! Heather hit a top-rope crossbody block. Rory hit a double-underhook DDT on Rose for the pin.

Heather Reckless and Rory Shield defeated “J-Rod” Jessica Roden and Sophia Rose at 7:12 /official time 6:45.

* Harley Hudson spoke outside. She’s here to seek her fame and fortune in pro wrestling. She vowed to win the belt from Maggie Lee tonight!

5. Ryan Matthias (w/AOD) vs. Trey Miguel. I’m fairly certain that Ryan was trained by the Rascalz. They traded quick reversals and armdrags. Trey hit a dropkick. AOD reached into the ring and tripped Trey, and that allowed Ryan to take control. Trey went for a handspring move, but AOD again reached in and tripped him up. Ryan tied him in a Surfboard at 3:00, then cranked back on Trey’s head. Ryan hit a dropkick as Trey was going for a handspring move.

They got into a knucklelock and Ryan hit a suplex at 5:00. Trey hit a handspring-back-spin kick. Miguel hit a German Suplex and an enzuigiri, then a double stomp to the back for a nearfall. Ryan hit a dropkick in the corner and a delayed vertical suplex, then a running Shooting Star press for a nearfall at 7:00. Trey got onto the top turnbuckle, but Ryan hit a leaping dropkick, then a moonsault-into-an-inverted DDT like a young AJ Styles.

Trey hit a series of kicks to the back and chest and got a nearfall at 9:00. This has been sharp. Trey went to the top rope, but AOD hopped on the apron to distract him. Matthias accidentally kicked AOD! Trey hit a top-rope Meteora, then a dive through the ropes onto Matthias. In the ring, he hit his swinging neckbreaker for the pin. Easily the best match of the show so far.

Trey Miguel defeated Ryan Matthias at 10:03. 

* Backstage, Maggie Lee talked about her match later against Harley Hudson. “I run the Midwest, and I run AAW. And that’s why I’m the champ, and you never will be,” Lee said. Cagematch.net shows they’ve shared the ring five times (all in TNA), and Maggie is 1-0 in singles bouts.

6. Maggie Lee vs. Harley Hudson for the AAW Women’s Title. Maggie charged at Harley and we’re underway! Harley hit a guillotine leg drop. Maggie hit her mid-ring buttbump for a nearfall at 2:00. She hit a snap suplex for a nearfall, then a series of kicks in the corner. Maggie hit a fallaway slam for a nearfall, and she choked Hudson in the ropes. Maggie stomped on Harley’s stomach as Hudson was in the ropes, but she missed a moonsault at 5:00.

Hudson hit some running forearms. She hit a series of running buttbumps for a nearfall. They traded rollups. Harley hit a springboard bulldog for a nearfall at 6:30. Maggie hit her cartwheel-into-a-powerbomb for a nearfall. (She won with that move a night earlier in Chicago Style Wrestling!) Maggie tied Harley in the Tree of Woe, but Harley was able to suplex Lee to the mat at 8:30. Maggie hit her version of a Tombstone Piledriver for the pin. Good action.

Maggie Lee defeated Harley Hudson to retain the AAW Women’s Title at 8:43.

* Laynie Luck and Shazza McKenzie spoke outside. They are ending their feud with the Besties in the World tonight!

7. Isaiah Moore vs. Rafael Quintero vs. Amazonga vs. Richard Holliday in an elimination match for the AAW Heritage Title. We got the bell, but Richard was busy arguing with the fans. Amazonga hit a clothesline on Holliday, then on Quintero and Moore. Again, Amazonga is a lot like Fallah Bahh. The other three hit stereo superkicks on Amazonga, then clotheslined him to the floor. Two guys dove through the ropes onto Amazonga at 2:00! In the ring, Moore dropkicked Quintero. Amazonga hit a running body block to flatten Moore, then a running splash into the corner.

Quintero hit a top-rope diving European Uppercut on Amazonga at 3:30. Moore hit a Pele Kick on Holliday. Moore dove over the ring post and crashed onto all three challengers on the floor. In the ring, Moore hit a DVD on Quintero and a top-rope elbow drop to the sternum for a nearfall. Quintero rolled up Moore and pinned him at 4:47. The champion is the first man out!!! Quintero tried an Irish Whip, but he couldn’t budge Amazonga. He dove through the ropes onto Amazonga. In the ring, Quintero hit a top-rope crossbody block on Holliday.

Amazonga hit a headbutt on Holliday and a splash into the corner. He splashed Quintero in the opposite corner at 7:00. He got both guys onto his shoulders, but Holliday escaped, so Amazonga tossed Quintero onto Richard! Amazonga slammed Holliday, but he missed a moonsault. Holliday hit a low-blow uppercut and his 2008 twisting suplex and pinned Amazonga at 8:12. Holliday hit some chops on Quintero. Holliday put Quintero in a Torture Rack and turned it into a neckbreaker for a nearfall.

The crowd rallied for Quintero, who got an inside cradle for a nearfall, then a running European Uppercut for a nearfall at 11:00. Quintero leapt off the top rope, but Holliday caught him with His Signature Move (the low-blow uppercut). Quintero rolled to the floor to avoid being pinned. Holliday threw him back into the ring. They traded forearm strikes and loud overhand chops. Quintero hit a Frankensteiner! He nailed a top-rope elbow drop for the pin! That was really fun.

Rafael Quintero defeated Richard Holliday, Amazonga, and Isaiah Moore to win the AAW Heritage Title at 12:59.

* Backstage, Richard Swann and the “Hellhounds” Schaff and Russ Jones were ready for their cage match main event tonight!

8. “The Collab” Shazza McKenzie and Laynie Luck vs. “The Besties in the World” Mat Fitchett and Davey Vega (w/John E. Bravo and Bruss Hamilton). Shazza got in Vega’s face at the bell. The commentators noted they are a real-life married couple and wondered how they get along at home. Mat shoved Shazza to the canvas. Laynie jumped in and hit a forearm strike on Fitchett and tossed him to the floor. Shazza hit a springboard dive onto the four guys on the floor. Laynie hit a top-rope somersault onto the four guys at 1:30.

In the ring, Shazza hit an Atomic Drop on Vega and dropped him face-first over Laynie’s knee. Laynie tossed Shazza onto Vega in a corner. Mat was tripped and landed head-first on Vega’s groin. The women each applied an Octopus Stretch. Fitchett dropped Luck snake-eyes in the corner at 3:00. The guys began working over Shazza in their corner. Mat hit a delayed vertical suplex for a nearfall at 5:00. Vega hit a flying elbow drop to the back, then he knocked Laynie off the apron to the floor.

Bruss choked Shazza in the ropes. Mat knocked Laynie to the floor. Vega fell head-first on Mat’s groin at 8:00. Shazza hit a top-rope crossbody block onto both guys and finally got the hot tag to Luck! Laynie hit a twisting neckbreaker on Vega and a running knee on Mat as he was in the ropes. She went for a Penalty Kick on Bruss, but Bruss blocked it, so she superkicked him. In the ring, she hit a tornado DDT on Fitchett for a nearfall at 9:30. Fitchett pushed the women together, then got a rollup on Shazza for a nearfall. He hit a Flatliner for a nearfall, but Luck made the save.

Shazza ducked out of the way as the guys tried flying kicks into the corner. “Is this normal for married couples to do?” a commentator asked. Shazza set up for the Splits stunner, but the guys shoved her headfirst into an exposed corner. Vega then rolled up Shazza for the tainted pin. Solomon Tupu ran in with a chair to save the women, and the heels scampered off. Laynie carried Shazza to the back.

“Besties in the World” Mat Fitchett and Davey Vega defeated “The Collab” Shazza McKenzie and Laynie Luck at 11:48.

* A guy interviewed Rory Shield on the stage, by the entrance. He informed Rory that with her recent wins, she is now the No. 1 contender! Maggie Lee came up behind her and snatched away the mic. Maggie belittled Rory. “Do you seriously think you are on my level?” Maggie asked. Rory punched her and shouted, “I’ll see you next month,” then Shield stormed off.

* The guy then interviewed Rafael Quintero. (They are clearly doing these interviews while the cage was being erected.) He congratulated Quintero on outlasting three men to win the belt. Rafael said he’s ready to fight anyone, anywhere. Richard Holliday came out. He believes he should be champion. He wants a singles match for the belt! Trey Miguel came out and said he also deserves a title shot. A match was set, and all three left.

* The interviewer then brought out Solomon Tupu. He didn’t like seeing The Besties in the World cheating! He’s a man of the people! He issued a challenge to the Besties to take on him and Robert Anthony at the next show.

* Thomas Heim came out for his interview. He claims he’s “Sabrina Carpenter’s side-piece.” Heim said she opted not to come to the building tonight after all. “Twist and Flip” came out and beat him up.

* OKAY, the cage was finally set up! This is a hard cage with metal rods, like the one TNA used on Sunday, not a softer mesh cage that resembles a yard fence. Rich Swann’s long intro took forever — I hate seeing it but not hearing it, so I zipped over it.

9. Rich Swann and “The Hellhounds” Schaff and Russ Jones vs. Joe Alonzo, Joshua Bishop, and Donovan Marcellus (w/Stevie Smooth) in a steel cage match. The heels came out first. After Swann decided he was done dancing with women in the crowd, the babyfaces got in, and all six began brawling. (No tags in the cage!) The babyfaces rolled back to the floor and got chairs and brought them into the ring. Jones struck Bishop over the head with a chair at 3:00. Both Donovan and Joshua were quickly bleeding.

The sound went out… yes, Swann decided it was time to dance again, so all three babyfaces did Swann’s dance. Eye-roll. The heels got up and threw the babyfaces into the cage walls. Joe threw a chair at Swann’s face. Bishop threw one at Russ, too. Joe jabbed a chair into Schaff’s back at 5:30. Schaff was now bleeding. Donovan and Swann fought to the floor. They got up onto the stage. In the ring, Bishop and Alonzo threw Schaff into a corner.

Schaff and Bishop traded forearm strikes at 8:00. On the floor, Swann threw Marcellus into the side of the cage. Swann leapt off the stage and hit a flying elbow drop on Donovan, then tossed Donovan into a pillar. In the ring, Russ hit a Doomsday clothesline. Swann hit a 450 Splash for a nearfall at 10:00. Donovan hit an inverted DDT on Russ. Swann hit a spin kick to Donovan’s ear. Stevie got in the cage, and he hit a low blow on Swann!

Bishop set up a door bridge on the stage at 12:30. He threw Swann like a lawn dart into the side of the cage. Bishop slammed Swann off the side of the cage and through the table on the stage! In the ring, Schaff whipped Donovan into the cage wall. Bishop re-entered the cage and hit some chairshots to the heads of the babyfaces. Schaff hit a DVD on Bishop across some open chairs! Donovan climbed to the top of the cage! He went for a top-rope twisting splash, but he crashed to the mat without hitting anyone. Bishop ran both Hellhounds through a door in the corner. He hit a Razor’s Edge on Jones! Bishop pulled both Alonzo and Marcellus onto Russ, so all three covered and pinned Jones. Okay brawl;

Joshua Bishop, Donovan Marcellus, and Joe Alonzo defeated Rich Swann and “The Hellhounds” Schaff and Russ Jones in a steel cage match at 15:58.

Final Thoughts: I really liked the Trey-Matthias match; it stole the show. Trey’s match here a month ago was short and cautious, but he cut loose tonight and kept up with the highly underrated Matthias. I’ll go with Maggie vs. Harley for second, and the men’s four-way elimination match for third. The eight-way scramble to open the show was really fun and worthy of honorable mention.

The steel cage match was merely okay; the live crowd loved it more than I did. While I hate escape-the-catch rules (and I’m glad they weren’t in place here), isn’t the point of the cage to keep everyone inside the ring? Rich Swann seemingly spent half that match on the floor. The match loses points for too many chairshots to the head, and we didn’t need that many guys bleeding, either. Bishop’s slam on Swann through a table seemed really brutal. Marcellus does nothing for me, and it’s really silly that the heels continue to rely on an eight-year-old boy to help them get the upper hand on babyfaces.

The rest of the show was fine. I don’t mind short squashes mixed in, but it was surprising to see Blair Onyx lose that quickly. Only one new face here; everyone else is a regular. Because AAW rarely airs shows live, they do a great job of mixing in those backstage promos between matches, and it’s a model more promotions should follow.
