This week’s SmackDown, which featured Michael Cole and Corey Graves on commentary, began with a recap of last week’s Undisputed WWE Championship match between CM Punk and Kevin Owens.

A line of challengers awaits CM Punk

Kevin Owens arrived in the ring, and the fans started singing. Owens admitted this wasn’t how he imagined his return to Ottawa, and he admitted that he’s lost many title matches, but last week in Toronto was the worst. Owens said that when he went to try to get cleared, he wanted to come back as soon as he could. He was told it would take four weeks, but he did it in nine days so he could be at SummerSlam and be in the No. 1 contender’s match. He wanted to win the WWE Championship not only in Toronto but also because he knew his parents would be at the show. He called back to his mother, who was rushed to the hospital two years ago. She’s OK now, but traveling has been difficult for her. His parents drove to the show, and he wanted to win the title in front of his mother. However, Sami Zayn made sure that didn’t happen. He noted he and Sami did a lot of messed-up stuff to each other, but this time, he can’t forget it nor forgive it. He noted that he won’t get an opportunity like that again, where all the stars aligned: in Canada, in front of his family and friends and a chance to beat CM Punk. He told Punk that he and he knew that Owens was better than the “Best in the World” and how lucky Punk was that Sami interfered. He added that he and Punk aren’t done; they’re just getting started.

Without his music, Punk interrupted, saying no one asked him if they were done. He told Owens that he didn’t need Sami Zayn’s help to beat him and that he had him dead to rights with the GTS. Nick Aldis also was out with Punk, trying to calm them down, as Punk said he would ship him out of Ottawa like his last name was Tkachuk. Gunther’s music played, and he came out in a suit. Gunther said his ears would bleed if he kept listening to that. He told Punk and Owens that he understands why they hate each other. It’s because when they see each other, they see their arrogant, obnoxious, opinionated selves. He added that while they’re arguing about something from 20 years ago, he’s here to remind them of something now. He told Owens to listen to him, and he told him that he’s glad his mom kicked out, but last week, he didn’t.

Before turning his attention to Punk, Finn Balor’s music played. Balor said they’re forgetting about someone, but Gunther interrupted, saying the “ghost of Finn Balor” is out. Balor told Gunther, “Shut your mouth, you whiny little prick.” He said he spoke for everyone when he said that they’re getting tired of his act. Balor told Owens that he loved him, but he had his opportunity, and that neither Gunther nor Owens has beaten him, so if there is a line for the championship, it starts with him. Aldis said there was nothing more to discuss because Balor, Owens and Gunther would face each other in a three-way main event tonight.

Chelsea Green was looking at her bedazzled face mask backstage, and Tiffany Stratton came up to her and asked if she wanted to go out. Green said she was, and Tiffany noted that Chelsea has 30 days to defend her title and she didn’t want anything to jeopardize that. Chelsea appreciated that, but after everything they’ve been through with Nia Jax and Lash Legend, she’s not leaving Tiffany alone.

Chelsea Green & Tiffany Stratton vs. The Irresistible Forces (Nia Jax & Lash Legend)

Tiffany set Lash up on the ropes for a hip attack, but that didn’t bother Lash, who hit Tiffany with a backbreaker. Chelsea blindtagged herself in, as Tiffany hit a springboard Stunner, and Chelsea hit a neckbreaker. Nia Jax tagged in, and Tiffany set up Chelsea with a Meteora on the ropes. Nia used her power to brush off Chelsea, and she countered the Unprettier into a headbutt. Chelsea writhed in pain, and Tiffany tagged herself in. The Irresistible Forces worked over Tiffany through the picture-in-picture ad break, with Chelsea trying to gather herself in the corner.

Tiffany flipped over Lash, but she hesitated to tag in Chelsea. Lash chokeslammed Tiffany, and Chelsea broke up the pin. Nia drove her knee onto Chelsea’s face, and she rolled outside, letting the medical team look after her. Lash locked in a bear hug. Tiffany fought out of it but ran into a lariat. Nia continued the damage on Tiffany, who escaped out of the corner and fought back until running into a lariat again for a nearfall. Nia mocked Tiffany and Chelsea, as Lash tagged in and locked in the bear hug to set up the guillotine leg drop. Tiffany escaped and hit Lash with Sliced Bread. The medical team tried to take Chelsea to the back, as Tiffany went to their corner. Chelsea ran back and tagged in, taking out The Irresistible Forces. She landed a top-rope crossbody on Nia outside. The crowd got behind Chelsea, who went for the Unprettier, but Nia countered. Chelsea sent Lash outside, and Tiffany tried to go after her, but Lash caught a dive and slammed her onto the barricade. Nia hit the Annihilator for the win, with Nia getting the pin on Chelsea.

Danhausen meets Gunther

Nick Aldis was on the phone in his office until Danhausen came in. Danhausen suggested he be Employee of the Month for SmackDown, and Gunther came in. Danhausen, who called him “Guler,” offered a handshake for how evil Gunther’s been and how it was nice to meet him. Gunther ignored him and asked Aldis about the main event and how he doesn’t appreciate how Aldis makes him jump through hoops over Owens and Balor. Aldis assured Gunther that there wouldn’t be any more additions, as he scanned Danhausen and walked away. Danhausen was intrigued when Gunther talked about the “ghost of Finn Balor,” but Aldis noted it was a figure of speech. Danhausen asked if he could be part of the main event. Aldis said no, and Danhausen happily left.

There was another trailer for the Mr. T documentary on Netflix.

Women’s United States Championship: Jacy Jayne (c) vs. Paige

Jacy huddled up with Fatal Influence and told the fans to shut up. She and Paige traded barbs, as Paige went for the knees between the ropes. Jacy was collecting herself, and Paige landed a cannonball on the outside. The official was dealing with Jacy, and Lainey Reid caught Paige with a boot to take the match into an ad break. After the break, Paige escaped a headlock with a jawbreaker and caught Jacy with a lariat. Both women traded strikes, and Jacy landed a series of kicks, dropping Paige with an enzuigiri. Jacy took too much time, allowing Paige a lariat, a fisherman’s suplex, a German suplex and a Paige Turner for a two-count. Jacy landed a superkick, but Paige tried to go for the PTO. Jacy escaped, but Paige rolled up Jacy for a nearfall. She landed a headbutt and went for the Rampage, but Lainey distracted her. She threw Jacy into the ropes to knock down Lainey. She took out Fallon Henley, but Jacy caught her in a small package pin for the win.

After the match, Nikki Bella attacked Paige from behind. Michael Cole called her a “witch,” as Nikki went after Paige’s neck. She dropped Paige with the Rack Attack 2.0, talking trash to Paige and the fans.

We move into a sponsored recap of the Cody Rhodes-Randy Orton feud.

Cody lost for words

Cody was sitting backstage, as Balor asked him if he was good. Cody wished he was, but he’s not sure what to say or what to do amid the stipulation Aldis put up where he can’t put his hands on Randy or else forfeit his ability to challenge for the WWE Championship. Balor told Cody that he should keep his head cool because Orton is baiting him. He noted that he’s been down that dark path before, so he advised Cody to not do anything he’ll regret. He also told him that he’s going to be the No. 1 contender, so by the time Cody’s done with Randy, there will be a new champion. He said they’ll handle their own business and see each other on the other side. They shook hands, and Balor wished Cody luck.

Yachty ready for SNME

Trick Williams was looking for Lil Yachty backstage. He appreciated what Yachty did for him, but he asked him if he was ready for this. Trick noted that even though Baron is bald, he makes up for it with his verocity and his meanness. He noted that Corbin is ugly, but he’s a monster. Trick proposed going to Aldis, but Yachty said he’s fried bigger fish and isn’t worried about Corbin. Yachty told Trick he doesn’t stand for the disrespect. He noted that Corbin has disrespected Trick and them. He also noted that Baron took the United States Championship and put him through a table on ESPN. He said at Sunday Night’s Main Event, he’ll do the impossible: He’ll last five minutes, and Trick will go down the ring and get his title back. Yachty left to go to the gym, and Trick said he’d meet him later. Corbin snuck up behind him (seemingly Yachty didn’t see him). Corbin told Trick that he doesn’t have friends in WWE because they make you do stupid things, and he’d whoop that trick (Yachty). Trick mocked Corbin for the lack of originality, and Corbin told him that he doesn’t have to be entertaining because he’s the champion. Notably, the belt doesn’t look different.

Cody and Orton try to bait each other

Cody came out to a mostly positive response. He wanted to talk about Randy Orton. He admitted he wanted to beat the hell out of Orton, but that wouldn’t accomplish his goal of killing the Legend Killer. He talked about the No. 15, the number Orton is looking to hit. He admitted that if anyone could break the world title record, it’s Orton, but any time he’s come close, he screws up. He said Orton never took accountability, and he’s screwed up again by getting in the way of him and the WWE Championship at SummerSlam. He said at SNME, it won’t be Randy beating Randy; it will be Cody… and Orton interrupted.

Orton talked about accountability and admitted that it was true that he made mistakes early in his career. He talked about how Cody had a front-row seat, driving Orton from city to city. He needed a “bitch,” and Cody raised his hand and made sure he got tucked in at night. He asked Cody if he resented him for that and if he was at a crossroads. He invited Cody to take a swing at him. He then asked Cody if he was pissed off about taking him out with a boot and costing him the title at SummerSlam. Cody remained silent, and Orton asked, “Cat got your tongue?” He noted that Cody is a dog guy and talked about how Cody would bring Pharaoh to shows. He asked if Pharaoh died and if his daughter had to bury him in his backyard. That irritated Cody, who walked around the ring, taking his coat off. Orton pointed out that SNME is in Cody’s backyard in Atlanta and how he might have friends and family to watch him kick Cody in the head.

“Come to think of it, are you gonna make sure your trailer park trash mother will be in the front row when I kick your ass?” Cody took off his tie as Orton invited Cody to punch him. “What about your trashy ass wife of yours? Is she gonna be there?” Cody stared Orton down as Orton dropped his mic and told Cody to punch him. Cody said he knew what Orton would do and expected it. He said Orton would do anything to get out of SNME. Cody said he is counting the days until SNME to find out if Orton is a once-in-a-lifetime generational superstar like Cody’s dad or if he’s a first-class screw-up like Orton’s dad. Orton seethed, telling Cody that was too far, and it was Cody’s turn to tell Orton to hit him. Cody got the last smile and told Orton he’d see him in Atlanta.

Lead-in to SNME

Jackie Redmond was backstage with Tatum Paxley, who said her mind has been racing with so many thoughts and voices ahead of her match with Michin. She told Jackie a secret, and she walked off as Tatum laughed. Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss greeted Tatum, who said she had a great time at brunch and apologized for the “blood thing.” Charlotte threw in a jab about how “three’s a crowd,” but Alexa told her she would have to deal with it because Aldis booked the three of them against Jade Cargill and The Baddies at SNME. Paxley was happy, and Charlotte inadvertently allowed Tatum to high-five her while telling her to make sure she doesn’t make her regret it. Alexa noted that they’d be with her, and Tatum hugged Charlotte, who also was hugged by Alexa.

A video package played for the World Heavyweight Championship tournament.

Bryon Saxton was backstage with Rey Fenix, who was asked about the finals against Penta. Fenix said he loves his brother, but he wants to be heavyweight champion. Ricky Saints interrupted and mocked Fenix for his love for his brother. Saints told Fenix to imagine him losing to Penta and coming back to SmackDown to stop ducking him for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship. (These were web exclusives for those who missed them.) Fenix told a story about him winning he tournament, becoming World Heavyweight Champion and shutting Saints up. He said something in Spanish before walking off.

Tatum Paxley vs. Michin

A bit of a back-and-forth to start with Tatum showing off her athleticism. Cole and Graves were talking about how crazy Paxley is while putting over her accolades. Michin landed a PK on Tatum outside. Paxley caught Michin with a moonsault outside and went over to hug Charlotte and Alexa to head into an ad break. Michin was in control over Paxley after the break. Michin locked in a bow and arrow stretch, but Paxley countered it into a pin. Paxley escaped a cannonball in the corner, as the crowd got behind Paxley, who rolled through with a pin for two. She caught Michin with a superkick; she convulsed in the ring before landing forearms on Michin. She hit a high kick and a step-up ezuigiri before staring down Jade. She knocked Michin down with another kick. Michin caught Paxley with a powerbomb and went for the Styles Clash. Paxley countered into a back drop and hit a rolling kick. She won with the Cemetary Drive.

After a recap of Blake Monroe’s attack on Giulia last week, Jackie was backstage with Blake, who claimed she didn’t jeopardize her in-ring debut because that match was beneath her. She told Jackie that if she was good at her job, she’d ask Aldis why a “superstar” like Monroe would be booked in a match like that in the first place. She added that when there’s an opponent up to her standards and an entrance worthy of The Glamour, then she’ll make her debut. Giulia then attacked her.

Owens was making his way to the ring and ran into Orton, who admitted to him that he was right about Cody. Owens was glad Orton came to realize that, but Orton pointed out that Owens did still drop him on his head, so this doesn’t mean they’re friends. Owens said they’d work on it later.

Growing tag title scene

After a graphic that talked about how Haku was a former tag champion with Andre the Giant, the MFTs cut a pre-taped promo. Tama Tonga asked if we were paying attention yet. He said Damian Priest and R-Truth brought everything they had, but it wasn’t enough. He added that everyone has forgotten about them. Talla asked if Nakamura was threatening them. He said the last time he saw him, he put him out for months. Now, he sees him at home with backup. Tama told Kyoki that he’s not in Japan anymore. He told him that his senpai brought him to their territory just to get put in the dirt. In Tongan, Haku told his sons to not underestimate their enemies. In English, he added that their challenger should be destroyed. Why? Because they’re the Motherfucking Tongans.

Priest was in the locker room watching the promo when Truth walked up. Truth was excited about getting their tag titles back. Priest said this summer has been the best of his career, but now they don’t have the titles at the end of summer, which he’s taking as a sign. Truth hugged Priest, saying they have to stick together. Priest said he wanted to get back to singles championships, but he’ll still have Truth’s back. The War Raiders then came in and asked if they were done after letting the MFTs win the WWE tag titles before they did. Ivar added that the MFTs will get the beating they prepared for them. Priest pointed out that they were in the matches, too, and they didn’t get the job done. The War Raiders simply said they didn’t lose. Truth pointed out that Priest wants gold, and after butchering his Spanish, he challenged them for the AAA Tag Titles. Erik said they could do it in Mexico City, but Priest wasn’t all aboard. However, Truth accepted and asked for one more ride. Priest accepted.

The Irresistible Forces confronted Aldis in his office. Nia asked for her championship match, but Aldis noted that she needed to be looked at. Nia said she’s been screwed out of the titles too many times and pointed out that Aldis said Chelsea needed to defend the title in 30 days. Nia said she would take force if not given a title match in two weeks.

The Miz and Kit Wilson then came in, and Aldis was glad to hear Miz speaking in complete sentences again. Kit told Aldis that while he was wrestling at SummerSlam, they were lab rats, electrocuted under his watch. He failed as GM and is toxic. They called to lesson 25 of the Miz Method, which is to keep your receipts. Aldis said The Miz and Kit Wilson will face Bakusai, Shinsuke Nakamura and Kyoki. The Miz then gave Kit another lesson.

Undisputed WWE Championship No. 1 Contendership: Finn Balor vs. Gunther vs. Kevin Owens

Gunther attacked Balor during his entrance to start the match. Owens didn’t waste time and landed a Swanton, but Balor was quick to break up the pin. Balor caught Owens with a basement dropkick, but Gunther caught him with a chop. As he was talking trash, Balor rolled him up. Gunther kicked out and chopped Balor again. Balor escaped a powerbomb and used Gunther’s momentum to send him outside. Balor sent Owens outside, and Gunther tried to lock in a sleeper, but Balor fought out of it and hit a tope con hiro to head into a PiP ad break.

Gunther got back on the offensive, and Owens took his focus on Gunther outside. Gunther dumped Owens and took out Balor, but Owens dragged Gunther outside and slammed his head on the announce desk. The action went back into the ring, as Balor and Owens tried to get their shots in on Gunther, but he continued to handle them. Gunther booted both men, Owens superkicked both men and Balor hit a Pele Kick for a triple down. Balor caught Gunther with a step-up enzuigiri, but Gunther escaped the Coup de Grace. Owens landed a cannonball on Gunther, but Balor hit a slingblade and a John Woo dropkick to set up the Coup de Grace.

Owens cut him off and went for a superplex, but Gunther dragged him down and hit a ripcord lariat. He chopped Balor and locked in a sleeper, but Balor hit a Coup de Grace to break it up, sending Owens out. Balor hit an elbow and a John Woo dropkick on Gunther. He landed the Coup de Grace, but Sami Zayn dragged Balor outside and tossed him over the announce desk. Sami dropped the referee, and Owens hit a Stunner on Gunther. Sami took out another official, telling him not on his watch. CM Punk then came out and brawled with Zayn. He told Sami here was his justice as he beat him up. Sami retreated into the ring, and Punk and Owens brawled. Sami hit Owens with the belt to a chorus of boos. He hit Balor with the title, and Gunther locked in the sleeper, which got cheers. Sami laid out Gunther and Punk with the belt as the crowd continued to boo. Sami told everyone this was justice and that no one gets a shot at the title as SmackDown went off the air.
