TNA Impact results (8/27): Moore’s review of the Lockdown fallout show with M by Elegance vs. Jada Stone for the Knockouts TV Title, Special Agent Zero and John Skyler vs. Jason Hotch and Trey Miguel

[Hour One] Highlights from TNA Lockdown aired…

Tom Hannifan and Matthew Rehwoldt were on commentary. McKenzie Mitchell was the ring announcer. Gia Miller was the backstage interviewer…

The TNA Tag Team Champions Nic Nemeth and Ryan Nemeth made their entrances. Tom Hannifan and Matthew Rehwoldt checked in on commentary. Hannifan noted that Kurt Angle was the only wrestler other than Nic Nemeth to hold the TNA Tag Team and World Championship at the same time. Ryan took the mic and said it was a good day to be a Nemeth Brother. Ryan said they beat the Hardys again, won the tag titles again, and “my big brother” is the TNA World Heavyweight Champion.

Ryan said the Nemeths are the greatest family in pro wrestling. Nic said he must be above the law now and can by his way out of anything. Ryan said he had experts compile a list of other people who have held the tag and world title at the same time. Ryan aired the list on the big screen and it was just Kurt Angle. Nic said he already beat Kurt and Kurt is bald.

Nic then turned his attention to Leon Slater cashing in Option C to challenge him at Bound for Glory. Nic said even if you are a one trick pony kid like Leon Slater, you should always reach for the stars and follow your dreams. He said you should always bet on yourself, unless it’s against Nic Nemeth. Leon Slater made his entrance. Slater said he came out at Lockdown to look Nic straight in the eyes and tell him how he’s going to get things done.

Leon said when he tells everyone he’s going to be the youngest TNA world Champion, he’ll best get it done at Bound for Glory. Slater pointed out how Nic has two titles now. Slater said Nic was so nice he gave his bug eyed little brother a belt too. Slater said he’s not gonna lie, the tag belts look kinda nice. Slater said he actually found a partner the last few months, and they’ve been undefeated at a team too.

Ricky Sosa made his entrance. Ryan yelled that you can’t just get a title shot by winning a few matches. Ryan said Daria Rae will not allow this. TNA Director of Authority Santino Marella made his entrance. Santino called Ryan a stupid-head. Santino said Daria may not book the match, but he will. Santino Marella booked The Nemeths vs. Sosa and Slater for the tag team titles later in the night. The Segment ended…

John’s Thoughts: A standard gloating promo from the new tag champions. I’m still a bit confused as to why they put the tag belts on the Nemeths. The Kurt Angle stat isn’t even Kurt Angle’s best dual champion stat as I thought it was more notable when he beat Brock Lesnar to become IWGP and TNA World Champion at the same time. Seriously, I have no clue how this is productive as they probably would have been better served with The Righteous as champions or something. They’re in Canada too, so Jeff Hardy is going to have to be written off of TV for the next few weeks right?

Order 4 were backstage. Mila Moore was getting off the phone with Mustafa Ali. (I think) Mila was trying to act like she was crying? Mila said that Ali’s in pain, but even from a hospital bed he’s thinking about what to do next. Mila said that Ali was supposed to team up with Agent Zero for a tag match against Jason Hotch and Trey Miguel, but he’s out. Mila said via Ali’s orders, John Skyler will replace Ali tonight. Mila told Skyler that with Ali out, he’s the de facto leader of Order 4 tonight. Tasha Steelz scoffed and rolled her eyes…

The commentary team ran through upcoming segments for later in the show…[c]

Brian Myers and Bear Bronson made their entrance. Myers talked about their battle scars from Lethal lockdown and how you can’t beat The System. Elijah made his entrance. Hannifan noted this match was happening since Elijah suspects that The System left him lying backstage. Hannifan said he suspected AJ Francis and Expressions, but noted that Elijah verified to him that AJ Francis left the building after getting hit by the guitar. The commentators brought up that Frankie Kazarian might be a suspect, but also noted that Moose and Cedric Alexander were also laid out backstage…

John’s Thoughts: Good string of commentary to establish the whodunit mystery of people getting laid out backstage. Given how it’s very surface level attacks and not “mystic”, my top suspect is Samuel Shaw, who’s had the Patrick Bateman serial killer gimmick all his career. Could be someone like Joe Gacy too? Smart on TNA for giving the fans a mystery to try to solve (It would kinda be a disappointment if it were just some guy on the roster, unless it will lead to someone getting a drastic character shift).

1. Elijah vs. Bear Bronson (w/Brian Myers). Elijah hit Bear with a Flying Clothesline and followed up with Undertaker’s Old School. Elijah tried to hit Bear with a drive by kick, but Myers got in the way which allowed Bear to hit Elijah with a Suicide Dive. Elijah hit Bear with a Mule Kick.

Bear came back with a Sidewalk Slam for a nearfall. Bear no sold two superkicks and gave Elijah a Choke Bomb for a nearfall. Elijah recovered and hit Bear with an Alabama Slam. Bear tried to go high risk, but Elijah dragged him down and hit him with the Highwayman’s Farewell (Tombstone Piledriver) for the win.

Elijah defeated Bear Bronson via pinfall in 4:46.

Brian Myers tried to attack Elijah, but was tossed out of the ring. Cedric Alexander and Eddie Edwards ran out to give the System the numbers advantage. Alisha Edwards joined them to pose to end the segment…

John’s Thoughts: Huh? Ewww. A glorified Squash for Elijah on Bear Bronson? This was very one sided for no reason. Hey, I like Elijah and respect how he’s great at getting himself over. I wouldn’t be this offended if this was Brian Myers and even Cedric Alexander! Bear Bronson has a good monster look. He’s a pretty decent talker too. This isn’t the first time they’ve done it to him too. Why is he the one eating all the pins (and it’s more egregious due to him standing next to the guy with the longest losing streak in WWE history, Brian Myers).

It was time for the TNA Sponsored Injury report, this time sponsored by a hotel chain. Hannifan noted that KC Navarro is “out” after Lethal lockdown. Jason Hotch is “cleared” after bruised ribs. Cedric Alexander is “out”. Mustafa Ali is “out” with a punctured lung…[c]

A Bound for Glory ad aired…

An Elayna Black promo aired. She talked about wrestling in front of her friends and family at Lockdown. She said she’s proud to wrestle in front of the people that supported her all her life, but disappointed she didn’t win the match. She said she was so confident she would walk out TNA Knockouts Champion. Elayna said maybe this is karma? She said she disrespected people and felt like the world owed her. She said Lockdown is what she needed. She said she had to be reminded why she does this and who she does this for.

She said she’s not only doing this for herself, but she’s doing this for her friends, family, and the little girls who look up to her as inspiration to become a professional wrestler one day. She said she’s here for those kids and to show people that she has a mission. Elayna said even though she didn’t leave Lockdown with the title, she’s only 25 and in her first year in TNA. She said she promises this is the beginning of a long long “Era of Elayna”…

John’s Thoughts: While not the most perfect promo content wise, I do like the promo in general and how it finally reframes Elayna Black as a babyface. The ethos is a bit off? Elayna is talking about being an “inspiration to little girls” yet 100% of her time in TNA has been mean girling and being the opposite of a role model. I get that she’s trying to emulate her idol AJ Lee, but AJ had years and years of building up a resume by putting on great character work and hovering all over WWE’s main event scene. Mara Sade also cut a similar promo about wanting to be a role model and came off more genuine. That aside, what I do like about this is they finally put in the effort to make her a babyface and she can start from square one, which could lead to her finally reaching those goals of being a role model. I liked this being both a mea culpa and using her loss at Lockdown as productive character development.

Entrances for the next match took place…

2. “Order 4” John Skyler and Agent Zero (w/Mila Moore, Tasha Steelz) vs. Trey Miguel and “Top Notch” Jason Hotch. Trey dominated the early match with quick offense. Hotch tagged in and Skyler tagged out to avoid fighting his friend. Hotch dumped Zero to ringside and hit him with a flip dive.[c]

Order 4 cut the ring in half on Jason Hotch back from break. Zero hit Hotch with End of Days for a nearfall (I’m not the biggest fan of him using that move as Baron Corbin has done a great job over the years performing that move and having the bookers protect it with only Roman Reigns kicking out). Hotch tagged in Trey after hitting Zero with a jawbreaker. Trey took down Skyler with an Enzuigiri for a nearfall.

Zero clocked Trey with a right hand. Hotch put on the brakes to avoid hitting Skyler. Hotch dodged, causing Zero to accidentally hit Skyler with a Mafia Kick. Zero blocked Hotch’s Suicide Dive at ringside, but Hotch shoved him into the ring post. Back in the ring, Trey hit Skyler with a Meteora Dive to pick up the win.

Trey Miguel and Jason Hotch defeated John Skyler and Agent Zero via pinfall in 9:01.

After the match, the big screen showed Mustafa Ali lying on a hospital bed. Ali was speaking with a lethargic voice and gave Hotch an “atta boy!”. Ali talked about Hotch telling the world that he’ll put Ali in the dirt, and he got very close to doing that. Ali said instead of the dirt, he’s in the hospital. Ali said Hotch tried to stop his heart by diving off the cage, but instead he cracked Ali’s ribs and punctured his lung.

Ali said this is very painful. He said the only thing that could be more painful is someone who disrespects your wife and daughter getting to live to tell the tale. Ali said he knows Hotch is hurting too, coughing up blood. Ali said he has a proposal because this is going too far. He said everyone is getting hurt around them, like Tasha getting caught in the line of fire on Sunday. Ali said Hotch’s wife and daughter are going through emotional trauma.

Ali proposed a truce and offered to let Hotch back in Order 4. Ali said it was either “open arms” or a “call to arms”, and that choice is Hotch’s. The camera showed Hotch seething in the ring. Hannifan said Hotch has another decision to make…

John’s Thoughts: A decent segment that was elevated by Mustafa Ali’s amazing character work post match. This is the 2nd year in a row where they’re doing the Order 4 Civil War, and it’s not repetitive one bit. The key here is storytelling and they are doing very nice telling a deep a nuanced story with a lot of characters. Ali is playing the role of villain extremely well, manipulating things and terrorizing the protagonist Jason Hotch. I also like the side story in Order 4 too, where Skyler doesn’t want to fight his former friend, but not only are Ali and Mila Moore gassing him up, but he also may or may not be hypnotized by Mila’s tig ol’ bitties. On top of that, I’m very interested to see how Tasha Steelz plays into all of this because she was the highlight of last year’s civil war where she was revealed as the hidden mastermind behind it all.

BDE and Rich Swann were approached backstage by Dutch and Vincent. They addressed BDE as “Brandon”. Vincent noted that The Righteous want to see BDE get his first win in TNA, and it seems like Rich Swann is forgetting about that. Swann said he wants to see Vincent and Dutch get the hell out of there. Dutch cut in and said that he’ll talk to Daria to get a match against BDE, and maybe BDE can get a win. Vincent said if BDE loses again, maybe he’ll think about what Vincent said…

Hannifan hyped upcoming segments…[c]

[Hour Two] Gia Miller interviewed Avery Styles. Gia asked him for his thoughts on signing with TNA at 19 years old. He said it’s a dream come true, watching his father make a name here. Moose approached Avery and welcomed him to TNA. Moose said he wanted to give Avery advice, be careful who you associate with. Moose warned Avery that Frankie Kazarian doesn’t help people unless he helps himself. Kazarian cut in and told Moose to “shut up”.

Kazarian said he knows what it takes to survive, thrive, and be the guy in this company. Kazarian said Avery doesn’t need the advice from somebody named after a big dumb animal. Kazarian said he’s looking out for Avery and Moose should stay out of his ear. Kazarian and Avery walked off the interview set…

John’s Thoughts: I really hope they take their time with Avery and Kazarian as a duo as I think it can lead to a long and entertaining story to kick off Avery’s career. Kazarian used to be in a tag team called “Bad influence”, and I think there can be something in Kazarian being a bad influence on Avery. It gives me similar vibes to Christian Cage and Nick Wayne, just without the dead dad stuff because AJ is alive and kicking. Kazarian is also a unc figure to Avery in real life, which can lead to some fun stuff, maybe even involving AJ in the future.

A M by Elegance and Jada Stone hype promo aired. M noted that she’s been wrestling for 4 years and it only took her two to get into TNA. Jada said she and Maggie have gone way back as friends, but she changed after joining the Elegance Brand. Jada said she didn’t expect to make it to the finals. M said Jada didn’t expect it, but she always knew she’ll make it. M said it’s not her fault that there was a bye in her bracket, but she deserves the win. Both women hyped winning the Knockouts TV title…

The complete bracket of the Knockouts TV Title tournament was shown. Rehwoldt noted that the finals will not have a time limit. Hannifan ran through the spotlights of the match…

Entrances for the Knockouts TV Tournament finals took place. McKenzie Mitchell handled the formal in-ring championship match introductions…

3. Jada Stone vs. M by Elegance (w/Heather by Elegance, The Personal Concierge, Mr. Elegance) in the finals of the TNA Knockouts TV Title Tournament. Jada gave M rapid rollups for a few nearfalls. Jada followed up with a Missile Dropkick and Moonsault for a two ocunt. M dragged Jada to ringside and gave her a Wheelbarrow Backbreaker on the apron. Jada kicked out at one. M worked on Jada with methodical offense.

Hannifan pointed out the Kinseio Tape on Jada’s shoulder from Lockdown. After a few minutes of M dominating, Jada got a window of opportunity after dodging a moonsault. Jada gave M rapid strikes. Jada gave M a huracanrana and dropkick. Jada hit M with a 619. Jada got a two count after a running Senton. M reversed a Stunner with a rollup. M reversed a Moonsault with a Blue Thunder Bomb.

Jada tripped up M and gave her a uppercut to the bac of the neck. M floated into a Power Bomb. Jada superkicked M on the top rope. Jada gave M a Super Spanish Fly. Stone hit M with a Moonsault, but M got her boot on the bottom rope for the rope break. Jada tried to roll up M, but M rolled through it and seamlessly hit Jada with the Thrill of the Kill Pile Driver for the victory.

M by Elegance defeated Jada Stone via pinfall in 11:06 to become the inaugural TNA Knockouts Television Champion.

The commentators hyped upcoming segments…[c]

John’s Thoughts: A well worked match with the right person going over. They could have had Jada win just to get the “inaugural” title on her, but it doesn’t hurt to give M that title either and there can be some fun feuds with people either chasing her or her getting a chance to be a workhorse champion. Whether it was Jada or Heather, M was going to get a petite opponent. M is very tall, but the size differential didn’t hurt here and actually added to the match for a fun dynamic. Bonus points to the current booking team too for giving the heel a clean win.

During the commercial break on TNA Plus, Frankie Kazarian walked Avery Styles to the stage to give him a pep talk (I’m reminded of Mufasa giving Simba that “you’re the future king” speech). Kazarian said the ring is his now, but it’ll be Avery’s someday. Kazarian told Avery to pay attention to the red light on the camera because when it’s on he’ll be talking to the entire world. Kazarian said AJ Styles is one of his best friends, and like Kazarian, AJ was one of the best in the world. Kazarian said Avery can’t be AJ Styles, because that will set him up for failure.

Kazarian said Avery needs to find out who Avery Styles is. Kazarian said the fans already believe in Avery, but more importantly Kazarian believes in Avery. Kaz told Avery to carve his path and stand on his own. He said he’s known Avery all his life and will always have Avery’s back. Kazarian told the production team to not play his music and instead play Avery’s music (which is AJ’s Ring of Honor theme after he left TNA)…[c]

Jeff Hardy was shown being loaded into am ambulance. Matt joined Jeff on his way to the hospital. Tom Hannifan assumed Jeff was attacked by the mystery backstage attacker…

John’s Thoughts: So, did they just try to kayfabe that Jeff Hardy was smuggled across the border, only to get his ass kicked and sent to the hospital? Anyways, this was our regularly scheduled Jeff Hardy kayfabe injury to keep him off TV for a month while they tape TV in Canada.

Indi Hartwell made her entrance for a promo segment. Indi said she’s usually happy, easygoing, and positive; but she’s pissed off now. She said hearing Daria Rae say she’s not deserving of a title opportunity got to her. Indi said Daria is a lot of things. Indi said she’s been obsessed with wrestling since being 8 years old. She said it’s her only dream and there’s no plan B.

She talked about dropping out of college and traveling across the world for her dream. She said she hasn’t felt stronger and is literally in her prime. Indi said she’s not letting anyone stand in her way anymore. The SUIT, Daria Rae, made her entrance. Rae said that was a touching speech until she remembered how mediocre Indi is. Rae said Indi thinks people who idolize wrestling deserve a title more than anyone else. She said she’ll tell Indi how the real world works.

Rae said in the real world, money equals opportunity. Rae said her advice to Indi is to take her underperforming, underserving, and mediocre ass back to catering. She said she urges her to stop disrespecting her name. Indi talked about calling her “Diarrhea” Rae, which lead to the crowd chanting “Diarrhea”. Rae said to “shut up, I’m talking”. Rae said if she ever steps back in the ring with Indi, she’ll send Indi back to kangaroo land. Indi said people like Daria are jaded and miserable, projecting on other people.

Indi said Daria is just trying to project her failed career on Indi. Indi said she’ll be Knockouts Champion. Daria wished Indi good luck. Suddenly, Zoey Serrano (f.k.a. Zoey Stark) attacked Indi from behind. Zoey left Indi lying after a Z-360 (Tilt-a-whirl GTS). Daria introduced Zoey as the newest member of the TNA roster…[c]

John’s Thoughts: Awesome signing for TNA. While she’s still a work-in-progress in terms of character work, she is arguably one of the best in-ring talents in the world. In NXT and WWE, they always trusted her to have great matches with anyone no matter what skill level they were at and she would always elevate them to a better level. A shame WWE lowkey did her dirty with releasing her once she was cleared from her devastating ACL injury. I actually wanted to see her in AEW to elevate their women’s division, but she can do that in TNA too. It’s interesting she’s starting out as Daria’s enforcer. I’m also intrigued in this program as they’re also teasing Daria Rae getting back in the ring too.

Harley Hudson met up with Indi Hartwell and said she can relate to her due to Daria Rae also threatening her career. Indi said Daria can’t send her anywhere. Hudson offered to have Indi’s back. Xia Brookside cut in to mock both women. Xia pointed out how Daria said that Indi will never get a shot at her title.

Santino Marella cut in and said he can also make matches like Daria. Daria cut in and said that she reminded the board of directors of Indi verbally assaulting her and physically assaulting Stacks and Ariana Grace. Santino cut in and booked Indi and Hudson vs. Serrano and Brookside. Daria said she can’t wait to see that…

An ad aired for what looked like some weird looking fight league called “30 second fight”. Tom Hannifan noted this show will air right after Bound for Glory on TNA Plus… (Huh?)

Tom Hannifan and Matthew Rehwoldt checked in on commentary and announced the following matches for next week: Zoey Serrano and Xia Brookside vs. Indi Hartwell and Harley Hudson and KC Navarro vs. Joe Alonzo in an X Division Championship qualifying match…

Entrances for the main event took place…[c]

John’s Thoughts: Side note, Ricky Sosa always reminded me of a young Shane “Swerve” Strickland, with the in-ring ability and catchy entrance. Low key, Leon Slater kinda reminds me of Will Ospreay a bit, with his in-ring ability and thick British accent. Swerve’s first big break was when he finally beat babyface Ospreay, only to have Ospreay turn heel for the first time and stab him in the back (leading to Ospreay’s big run in New Japan). A part of me wants to see similar parallelism, where Leon Slater stabs Ricky Sosa in the back on the come-up. Farfetched fantasy booking, but I really like parallelism when it can lead to entertaining stories.

4. Nic Nemeth and Ryan Nemeth vs. Leon Slater and Ricky Sosa for the TNA Tag Team Championships. Nic quickly tagged out to Ryan to avoid Slater. Slater tripped Ryan and hit him with a back elbow. Leon hit Ryan with Ten Punches in the Corner. Sosa tagged in and hit Ryan with a Senton for a two count. Nic tagged in. Sosa took down Nic with a shoulder tackle and body slam. Sosa hit Nic with a dropkick.

Ryan tagged in and ate a dropkick from Sosa. Slater tagged in and hit Ryan with a Missile Dropkick. Slater hit Ryan with a Helicopter Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall. Nic called for a time out at ringside.[c]

Back from break, The Nemeths cut the ring in half on Leon Slater. While Ryan was mugging for the crowd, Slater gave him and Nic dropkicks to bring in Ricky Sosa. Sosa hit Nic with a Moonsault for a nearfall. Nic rolled up Sosa with a hand full of Tights for a nearfall. Sosa hit Nic with a Final Cut for a nearfall. Nic got a two count after hitting Ricky with a hanging DDT. Nic tuned up the band, but Sosa caught him into a Blue Thunder Bang.

Slater tagged in and hit Nic with a Swanton 450. Ryan broke up the pin and tossed Leon into the steel steps. Sosa hit Nic with a nice looking Slingshot Cutter for a good nearfall. Ryan held onto Sosa’s leg and was kicked away. Slater hit Ryan with a Corkscrew Plancha over the ringpost. Nic hit Ricky with a Superkick for a nearfall. Ricky hit Nic with a Power Bomb for a really good nearfall (props to Nic for his usual great selling and kickout timing). A “TNA” chant ensued. Ricky went for a running uppercut, but Nic smoothly reversed the move into a Danger Zone for the victory.

Nic Nemeth and Ryan Nemeth defeated Ricky Sosa and Leon Slater via pinfall in 11:10 of on-air time to retain the TNA Tag Team Championships.

TNA President Carlos Silva presented the Nemeths with their title belts. The Nemeths celebrated to close the show…

John’s Thoughts: While I’m very iffy as to why the Nemeths have the tag title belts (more on that in a bit), this was a very entertaining television main event. There’s a part of me that would have had Nic Nemeth and Leon Slater not get physical before Bound for Glory, but they also minimized their interaction here, so I’ll hold back my nitpicking. The end of that match was fun with Nic Nemeth doing his signature selling and making Ricky Sosa look good in defeat.

Again, I don’t see the real logic behind putting the tag belts on the Nemeths? We could have used this time to build the Hardys in a feud for Bound for Glory. We know they need the Hardys to sell tickets, and they currently have nothing booked for their biggest show of the year. They also have less time to book that because Jeff can’t cross the border for a month of television. I’ll give the new booking team the benefit of the doubt, but I don’t see what they have that’s productive there. That aside, I really like everything else I see on the show.

I continue to really like the youth movement TNA is trying to undergo. Yes, there will always be that risk of them building up stars only for them to move on to WWE or AEW; but the turnover can be a part of the charm, similar to NXT having a revolving door of talent and using the roster resets to put out fresh new television. Every one expects Leon Slater to be gone in a few months, yet they aren’t just having him spin his wheels. They’re getting as much entertaining TV out of him while also utilizing him to elevate rising stars on the brand.
