Result of CM Punk vs. Kevin Owens Undisputed WWE Championship match
With Sami Zayn costing him the match, Kevin Owens was unable to become Undisputed WWE Champion in his home country of Canada tonight.
The main event of Friday’s SmackDown in Toronto ended with CM Punk defeating Owens to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship. Zayn factored heavily into the story of the title bout, attacking Punk while the referee was down and then sending him back into the ring. Owens — who did not see what happened — hit a stunner on Punk, but Punk was able to kick out.
After the kickout, Zayn tried to get Owens to use the Undisputed WWE title belt as a weapon. But Owens — who had already declined Zayn’s help — refused to win this way. Zayn then responded by hitting Owens with the belt. Punk capitalized on the situation, landing a Go to Sleep and pinning him to retain.
A post-match angle then took place with Zayn giving belt shots to both Punk and Owens. Zayn vowed to bring the championship back where it belongs after Punk “stole” it from him last month.
Zayn had a very brief nine-day reign as Undisputed WWE Champion before the returning Punk dethroned him on the July 6 episode of Raw.
One-and-done for Punk vs. Owens —
Going into tonight, our Bryan Alvarez reported that — whatever the result of Punk vs. Owens ended up being — the plan as of a few days ago was for this match to be a one-and-done rather than an extended feud between the two.
There are a lot of potential challengers in the SmackDown title picture at the moment with Zayn, Owens, Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, Gunther, and Finn Balor all in the mix. WWE has Money in the Bank coming up as its next PLE on October 10.
