MLW Fusion results (8/15): Vetter’s review of Bishop Dyer and Donovan Dijak vs. The Good Brothers in a Tennessee Tornado match for the MLW Tag Titles, Joe Coffey vs. LaBron Kozone, a battle royal

This is the first episode from this taping. As I’ve noted, MLW from a production standpoint has never looked better. Joe Dombrowski and Tom Lawlor were back on commentary, and Joe said it was a sellout.

* Joe said the main event is the Skyscrapers vs. The Good Brothers. However, the Skyscrapers are invoking “Freebird Rules,” so we don’t know which two will be in action!

1. A battle royal. Coming out first was Andrew Everett, followed by Manny Lo, Terry “Flip” Sequoyah, CJ Gallows, LaBron Kozone, Azteca 44, Diego Hill, Ikuro Kwon, Okumura, Jumbo, Wolfgang, Mark Coffey, Jesus Rodriguez, Don Gato. By my count, that’s 14 guys. CJ Gallows is the son of Doc Gallows! Azteca wore the black suit and red mask. This is the debut here for Jumbo (again, I saw him a month ago in Reality of Wrestling). A lot of wrestlers who competed in the now-defunct Deadlock Pro, too! I’ve seen Sequoyah just once in a match against Diego Hill. Kozone tossed his trainee, Manny Lo, at 1:30. Sequoyah flipped off Jumbo’s shoulders to the floor onto Manny Lo.

Everett (who thinks he’s a seven-foot giant) grabbed the 400-pounder Jumbo by the throat, but Jumbo brushed him aside. Kwon tossed Everett at 3:00. Jumbo eliminated Okumura. He chokeslammed Kwon on the apron, and Kwon fell to the floor. Kwon and Azteca 44 eliminated each other. Coffey was tossed. From the floor, Coffey helped Wolfgang eliminate Kozone! The match suddenly came down to Diego, Jumbo, and Wolfgang! Diego hit an enzuigiri on Jumbo. However, Wolfgang tossed Diego. Jumbo clotheslined Wolfgang to the floor to win! (I clearly missed Gallows being eliminated.)

Jumbo won a 14-man Battle Royal at 5:54.

* Next week, Austin Aries will defend his MLW National Openweight Title against Averno.

* A vignette aired for Josef Samael, who has returned to lead Contra.

2. LaBron Kozone vs. Joe Coffey (w/Mark Coffey Wolfgang). We learned last week that Coffey and The Glasgow Boys On Top were responsible for the attack on Teddy Long. Kozone has vowed revenge. They immediately brawled to the floor. They looped ringside and traded chops. They got back into the ring, and Coffey hit a forward Finlay Roll at 2:00, then an elbow drop for a nearfall. They traded more chops and forearm strikes. Kozone hit an Exploder Suplex at 4:30, and they were both down.

Kozone hit a spinning back fist and a leaping senton, then a Michinoku Driver for a believable nearfall. Joe hit a top-rope twisting crossbody block, then a leaping shoulder tackle for a nearfall! They traded more forearm strikes. Kozone hit a Mafia Kick, a German Suplex, and an enzuigiri! He nailed a flip powerbomb with a jackknife cover for a believable nearfall. The Glasgow Boys On Top jumped on the apron and distracted Kozone. Coffey got a rollup for the cheap pin!

Joe Coffey defeated LaBron Kozone at 7:51.

* Footage aired of the Killer Kross vs. Satoshi Kojima match that aired last week.

* A long commercial/vignette for Don Gato Tequila.

* Rich Bocchini interviewed Mistico on the entrance stage. Before Mistico could speak, Austin Aries confronted him. Aries said that Mistico is ducking him! Mistico spoke (we had English subtitles). Mistico said that if Aries has the balls, he will put the belt on the line and make next week a Triple Threat! Aries looked at a translation program on his phone and began shouting, “I have balls!”  The irate Aries agreed to make the match against Averno a Triple Threat.

* A video package aired for Zamaya. Next week, we’ll have Trevor Lee vs. Kushida!

* Backstage, Rich Bocchini interviewed Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. (How did he get back there so quickly?) Luke grabbed his son, CJ, from off-screen and stood next to him.

3. “The Skyscrapers” Bishop Dyer and Donovan Dijak vs. “The Good Brothers” Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows for the MLW Tag Team Titles. No sign of Joshua Bishop yet. We got the bell, and all four immediately began brawling. Dijak finally was able to remove his trench coat! Gallows hit a back suplex on Dijak, and Karl tossed Donovan to the floor. All four brawled at ringside. The Good Brothers pulled a table out from under the ring at 2:00.

Dijak hit a flip dive to the floor onto them! Bishop grabbed a crutch, and he struck Gallows across the back with it. Dijak got a kendo stick, and he used it on both Anderson and Gallows. Bishop slammed Karl back-first on the apron at 4:30. Gallows grabbed the kendo stick, and he struck the champs [Commercial for the MLW shop]. Back from the break, Bishop was working over Gallows, who was down on the mat. Anderson unloaded some chops on Dyer in the corner.

Karl hit a drop-toe-hold, slamming Bishop face-first on an open chair. Dyer hit the Deep Six slam on Karl for a believable nearfall at 7:30. Dijak and Dyer hit a team chokeslam on Gallows! Dyer hit a modified DVD. Dijak hit a grazing moonsault for a nearfall on Karl at 9:30. He got up and yelled at the ref. Gallows struck Dijak across the head with a garbage can lid, and Dijak fell off the ropes and through a table on the floor! The Good Brothers hit the Magic Killer team slam on Dyer and scored the pin! New champs!!!

* CJ Gallows got in the ring to celebrate with the new champs!

Final Thoughts: A decent episode. Jumbo is seriously about 6’4″ and 400 pounds. The crowd quickly warmed to him, and a big win in his debut is going to help. Obviously, Kozone’s feud with the Glasgow Boys On Top isn’t over.

I was surprised by the title change in the main event. I assumed that Dijak had held the belt this whole time, but perhaps MLW had him carrying it around at indy shows I’ve seen to create the sense that the MLW episodes are airing in real time (the shows will likely air 3-4 months after they were taped for quite some time).
