Wrestling Open RI “Episode 62” results (8/10): Vetter’s review of Dustin Waller vs. Ryan O’Neil in a “pick your partner” tag match, Alec Price and Jordan Oliver vs. DJ Powers and Nick Battee

This is an attractive two-story, white ballroom, and the lighting is really good. The crowd was perhaps 200, as we once again had some marquee matches. Paul Crockett and Jermaine Marbury provided commentary; I’m fairly certain I haven’t heard Jermaine on commentary before.

1. “Bustah & The Brain” Alec Price and Jordan Oliver vs. DJ Powers and Nick Battee. Powers took the mic but was loudly booed. This is the Wrestling Open debut for Price and Oliver as a tag team. Oliver had to miss a GCW show last Thursday, so it’s great to see him back today. Oliver and Battee opened. Oliver mocked Nick’s dancing. Oliver hit his twisting crossbody block. Price hit a running Blockbuster. Alec ran the ropes to pick up speed and hit a decapitating clothesline on DJ at 2:30, then he hit a tornado suplex.

DJ hit a thrust to Oliver’s throat and a DDT, and he choked Jordan on the mat. The heels worked over Jordan in their corner. DJ applied a sleeper on the mat. Oliver hit a double German Suplex at 7:00. Powers knocked Alec off the apron, then he nailed a superkick on Oliver. However, Price hit a Frankensteiner on Oliver, then a dive to the floor on Battee. Oliver finally tagged in Price to make him legal, and they immediately hit the Team Styles Clash to pin Powers. A fun match to open the show.

* Price got the mic and said it’s great to be back in Wrestling Open. Jordan noted that the Von Erich Classic six-man tag tournament is coming up soon here. He said it would be a great idea if they entered that tournament! Crockett wondered who would be their tag partner. (Presumably, it would be Flyin’ Ryan O’Neill, who is still to come later.)

2. Bobby Casale vs. Rain Conway. Conway came out first and cut a heel promo. He has that dawwwg in him! Standing switches to open, and Casale tossed him to the mat. He hit a gutwrench suplex and some roundhouse kicks to the chest. Conway began stomping on Casale, and he jawed at the crowd. Rain hit a German Suplex at 4:00 but didn’t go for a cover. They traded strikes. Casale blocked a Rainmaker clothesline, and he hit a neckbreaker over his knee. Bobby hit some roundhouse kicks to the chest and a release German Suplex, then a Facewash Kick in the corner, a standing powerbomb, then the Dominator swinging faceplant for the pin. I liked that.

Bobby Casale defeated Rain Conway at 6:42.

* A video montage aired of last year’s Von Erich Classic, won by Bobby Orlando and the Shooter Boys. The tournament begins next week and will be exclusive to the Monday shows in Cranston.

3. Kylon King vs. Eye Black Jack Pasquale. Crockett noted that Jack is having that “sophomore slump” and has struggled a bit in recent months. They locked up, and Jack shoved Kylon to the mat. Kylon hit some chops. Jack hit a bodyslam and a splash to the mat for a nearfall at 2:30. He hit a brainbuster for a nearfall. Kylon hit a neckbreaker over his knee and a senton for a nearfall at 4:30.

Kylon charged, but he crashed head-first into the middle turnbuckle. (Not as good as Mustafa Ali, but decent!) Jack hit a hard back elbow and was fired up. Jack hit a Bulldog Powerslam for a believable nearfall! He missed a frog splash at 6:30. Kylon immediately hit a running knee to the back of the head and a Gotch-style Tombstone Piledriver for the pin. Good for the time given.

4. “The Stetson Ranch” Steven Stetson and Brian Morris vs. “The Shooter Boys” Anthony Vecchio and Aaron Ortiz for the Wrestling Open Tag Team Titles. The Shooter Boys came out first; they attacked the champs as they emerged from the back, and all four brawled on the floor. They got in the ring, and we had a bell at 1:13 to officially begin. Vecchio has washed the pinkish-purple color from his hair from Saturday’s Limitless show. (They are heels when they manage B3cca.) He hit a running Blockbuster on Stetson.

Ortiz entered and hit a deep armdrag on Morris at 3:00. Morris hit a chop block on Aaron’s (kayfabe) injured left knee. Stetson saw it, jumped back in, and repeatedly stomped on Aaron’s knee. Stetson hit a Dragonscrew Legwhip at 6:00, and they ‘wish-boned’ Aaron’s legs. Vecchio finally got a hot tag at 8:30, and he hit a belly-to-belly suplex on Stetson, then a Chaos Theory on Morris for a nearfall. Vecchio hit his double-underhook twisting neckbreaker on Morris for a nearfall at 10:00!

The Shooter Boys set up for a team Blockbuster, but Stetson broke it up. Morris hit another chop block on Aaron. Aaron hit a German Suplex on Stetson for a nearfall. Aaron hit a flip dive, launching off of Anthony’s back and going over the ref, striking the heels at 12:00. Morris again kicked at Ortiz’s knee. Vecchio hit a superkick on Morris. Brian got a rollup on Vecchio, with his feet on the ropes, for the tainted pin. The crowd loudly booed that.

“The Stetson Ranch” Steven Stetson and Brian Morris defeated “The Shooter Boys” Anthony Vecchio and Aaron Ortiz to retain the Wrestling Open Tag Team Titles at 12:56/official time of 11:43.

* Footage aired of Kylie Alexa retaining her Women’s Title last week, after assistance from the returning Paris Van Dale!

5. Liviyah vs. Paris Van Dale (w/Kylia Alexa). Paris just returned from an injury, so this is her first match here this calendar year. Loud boos for the heels. Liviyah charged in and hit a Thesz Press. We got a bell at 00:10, as the women went to the floor, and Liv hit some chops. In the ring, Liviyah hit a top-rope crossbody block for a nearfall. Paris choked Liv in the ropes and hit a DDT for a nearfall at 2:30. Kylie choked Liviyah in the ropes, and the crowd screamed at the ref! (I love a good, hot crowd!)

Paris hit some hard clotheslines and was in charge. Liviyah hit a back suplex at 4:00, then a flying shoulder tackle and a spear for a nearfall. Liv and Kylie argued. Kylie jumped in the ring and attacked Liviyah, causing the DQ.

Liviyah defeated Paris Van Dale via DQ at 5:07/official time of 4:57.

* The heels were going to continue attacking Liv, but Shannon LeVangie ran in for the save, and the heels scampered off. Shannon challenged the heels to a tag match next week. (Shannon and Paris are tag partners in nearby Chaotic Pro, so I don’t trust her!)

6. Dustin Waller and Marcus Mathers vs. Ryan O’Neill and Bobby Orlando. Waller and Mathers have been feuding in recent weeks, both here and in GCW! They argued before the bell. Marcus and Ryan shook hands at the bell before locking up. They traded quick reversals and had a standoff. Marcus went to his corner, where Dustin berated him. Bobby got in, and he hit some chops on Dustin. Ryan hit a Poetry in Motion on Dustin at 3:00. Dustin forcefully tagged in Mathers and said, “I know you aren’t used to winning.”

Marcus hit a bodyslam on Bobby. Dustin and Mathers continued to jaw at each other while Dustin was working over Orlando. Dustin wanted Mathers to cheat while the ref was distracted, but Marcus refused! Marcus entered and hit a mule kick on Bobby for a nearfall at 7:00. Marcus and Dustin stood nose-to-nose and had a heated argument. Bobby hit a back-body drop on Waller. Ryan got a hot tag at 8:30; Waller wanted to tag out, but Marcus had vanished! O’Neill hit a stunner and hit twisting sidewalk slam for a nearfall.

Marcus was standing in the crowd. Ryan shouted at him, so Marcus rolled back in and they shoved each other! They began trading forearm strikes! Marcus hit some kicks. Ryan hit a suplex. Dustin went for a Lethal Injection, but Orlando caught him and hit a Lungblower to the back. O’Neill hit a frog splash for a nearfall, but Mathers made the save, and all four were down at 11:00. Marcus and Orlando traded offense. Mathers hit his kip-up stunner.

Orlando hit his second-rope Athena-style flying stunner on Marcus. Bobby went to the top rope, but Waller tripped him. Marcus hit a DVD on Bobby, and Waller hit a Mamba Splash! Mathers made the cover for a nearfall at 13:00. Waller berated Mathers for being slow to make that cover! Dustin got in Marcus’ face and yelled at him, then slapped him, so Mathers slapped him back! Dustin said he wanted that aggressive side out of Marcus! However, Ryan tripped Dustin, and Bobby rolled up Marcus and got the flash pin!

Ryan O’Neill and Bobby Orlando defeated Dustin Waller and Marcus Mathers at 14:40.

* Orlando helped Mathers to his feet, but Marcus shoved Bobby to the mat and stormed to the back and was booed. Crockett called him a “snot-nosed punk.”

Final Thoughts: Wrestling Open Rhode Island continues to be the best wrestling show anywhere on Monday nights. The RI shows are consistently a step ahead of the Thursday events, and certainly more entertaining than what is airing on Netflix these days. I’ll narrowly take the main event over the opener, but both tag matches feature some of my favorite guys on the indy scene today. (There is definitely a reason why Price, Oliver, and Mathers all have contracts, and Waller really should be given a close look by a major company, too.) The tag title match takes third.

No real complaints at all. I really like everyone on this roster. The Thursday crew needs to step up to match the quality of the Monday shows.
