Conor McGregor Claims New Evidence Proves UFC 329 Loss Should Be Overturned

Conor McGregor recently gave a new explanation for his disastrous comeback fight that resulted in another leg injury from his first strike in the fight at UFC 329.

McGregor, 38, fell in the first few seconds of his July 11 rematch with Max Holloway at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas while attempting a running, jumping kick.

He stumbled several more times before the referee halted the fight, giving Holloway a first-round TKO victory. This fight marked McGregor’s first appearance in five years.

McGregor Claims Wet Floor Led to Injury

He suggested that a wet cage floor might have played a part in his fall, just days after he called for the loss to be ruled a no contest.

In an Instagram post sharing footage of his walkout, McGregor claimed the cage floor was wet due to the dry-ice machine used during his entrance. He argued the result should be a no contest. The dry-ice machine has been part of several of McGregor’s UFC walkouts before without causing any issues.

The post came after McGregor called for the Nevada State Athletic Commission to change the result and for sportsbooks to refund bets placed on the fight.

There is no history of a first-round TKO loss like this being changed to a no contest, and the commission has not shown any intention to review the decision.

Conspiracy Theories Emerged That McGregor Entered The Fight Injured

McGregor’s injury led to speculation that he might have entered the fight with a prior injury or that he hurt himself during his walkout. Both McGregor and UFC CEO Dana White have dismissed these theories.

This loss marked the second straight fight where McGregor suffered a serious injury in the first round. His last fight, a 2021 trilogy match against Dustin Poirier, ended when McGregor broke his leg in the first round.

His UFC 303 comeback was also halted by a broken toe. He also suffered an ACL injury early in his career, and prior to the Khabib clash, he had recurring foot and ankle issues. McGregor also suffered a hand injury during the fight with Nurmagomedov.

The Holloway rematch also marked McGregor’s first fight after a civil jury in Dublin found him liable in 2024 for sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room incident from 2018.

He was ordered to pay damages and legal costs, and his appeal of the verdict was denied earlier this year.

McGregor has stated that he will need surgery for the injury sustained at UFC 329. He has mentioned a potential third fight with Holloway in 2027, a fighter he first lost to in their initial matchup in 2013. McGregor still has one fight left on his current UFC contract.
