Místico took the hair of rival Averno to cap off CMLL’s 93rd Aniversario event, but not without Averno gaining a measure of revenge for the closing visual.
This year’s major event was focused on four rivalries to set up a four-way tag, and the winning team would meet in an Apuestas match. Místico & Averno, Templario & Último Guerrero, Star Jr. & Zandokan Jr., and Bárbaro Cavernario & Dragón Rojo Jr. were this year’s headliners.
The tag portion only required thirteen minutes of action to set up the night’s finale. The eight brawled around the entrance area before pairing off. Dragon Rojo Jr. was the first one to eat a fall at the hands of Templario after a sit-out powerbomb eliminated Rojo Jr. & Cavernario.
In the second fall, Zandokan Jr. executed an Asai moonsault to the floor but never returned to the match; he was seen being tended to on the floor, and it wasn’t clear whether he had a legitimate injury. His partner, Star Jr., fell to Averno’s Devil’s Wings.
Minutes later, Místico hit a Tiger Feint kick to both Guerrero & Templario and sprung off the middle rope into a Destroyer to pin Templario.
It set the table for the night’s impromptu main event with Místico’s mask against Averno’s hair.
They worked exceptionally hard to build a shred of doubt toward the ending, but no fan believed that Místico was leaving unmasked. He added more than assurance earlier this week, mentioning he would “retire” if he was unmasked.
Averno dominated the first portion of the match, and it was a mixed response as Averno has become the cool villain while Místico is the company’s top star. Averno was excellent, and the selling by Místico was really great, but it was a stretch to say this captured the ambiance of some of CMLL’s largest Aniversario main events. It was still very heated, especially toward the end when Averno was continually going for covers.
Místico survived the Devil’s Wings and a lengthy armbar submission. Místico missed a Tornillo to the floor and was checked on by the doctor with the tease that the match would be waved off, but Místico refused to surrender.
Averno connected with the Devil’s Wings off the middle turnbuckle for another two-count. Místico rallied and hit a one-man Spanish Fly and a reverse crossbody before La Mistica ended the match.
Averno was in the process of having his head shaved as he handed a portion of his hair to the victor and raised the arm of Místico. However, with El Sky Team present in the ring, Averno attacked all three, swiped their masks, and left the three face down in the ring. There was a great overhead shot of El Sky Team after Averno stormed out of the arena.
Champions retain
All champions held onto their belts at the Aniversario card, including Hechicero submitting Claudio Castagnoli in a three-way that included Zack Sabre Jr.
The weakest finish of the night was reserved for the women’s four-way match as champion Persephone retained after grabbing her belt, handing it off to Tessa Blanchard and doing the Eddy Guerrero spot. The referee saw Persephone selling on the mat and Blanchard holding the belt and called for the DQ.
Titán defeated Komander to retain the CMLL Welterweight title, and Los Hermanos Chavez kept the CMLL tag titles in matches that were victims of time because of the ten-match format. Ángel de Oro & Niebla Roja are nearing the five-year mark of their championship reign.
Throughout the evening, video messages from partner promotions aired on the broadcast. There were videos sent by AEW’s Tony Khan, NJPW’s Naoki Sugabayashi, Stardom’s Taro Okada, MLW’s Court Bauer, RevPro’s Andy Quildan, and Scott D’Amore from Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling.
