NWA Kross Fire “EmPowerrr” results: Vetter’s review of Tiffany Nieves vs. Big Alice Crowley in a No DQ match for the NWA Women’s Title, Gisele Shaw vs. Mackenzie Morgan for the NWA Women’s TV Title

I admittedly rarely watch NWA, but I know they’ve signed a lot of talented, young women wrestlers in recent months. Google Maps shows Sevierville is on the far east side of Tennessee, east of Knoxville.

This is a plain convention center room, and lighting was decent. The ring was close to a stage; the fans sat on the other three sides of the ring. The crowd was maybe 150. Carmen Michael and Joe Cazana provided commentary. (Over the course of the show, Kenzie Paige, Carson Drake, and Sal Rinauro joined Carmen on commentary.)

* Tiffany Nieves came to the ring with two myrmidans. Tiffany wore a white dress; she wasn’t dressed to wrestle. She welcomed the fans to Empowerrr and said the event was created to showcase the female talent. She cut a heel promo, but told the crowd not to be upset, “because the princesa has arrived!” One of her henchwomen is named Greta, and she’s probably six feet tall. Alice Crowley and Lizzy Cassidy came to the ring. I don’t know Lizzy Cassidy; she has long, blonde, curly hair.

1. Tiffany Nieves and Greta vs. Alice Crowley and Lizzy Cassidy (w/Paige Collet). Big Al and Tiffany opened, and the commentators agreed that Tiffany is not dressed to wrestle, wearing that white dress. Lizzy got in and tried some blows to Greta’s chest. Greta is just incredibly tall and thick, and she easily bodyslammed 15-year-old Cassidy. Lizzy tried a stunner on Greta, but Greta didn’t budge. Greta chokeslammed Lizzy, put her foot on Lizzy’s chest, and got the pin. Not much of a match.

Tiffany Nieves and Greta defeated Alice Crowley and Lizzy Cassidy at 3:24.

* Big Al got on the mic and told Tiffany that they will meet for the title tonight … in a no-DQ match!

* We saw our commentators. Joe Cazana is older and wore a white suit that makes me think of Boss Hogg. (Who is old enough to get that reference?)

2. Gisele Shaw vs. Mackenzie Morgan for the NWA World’s Women’s TV Title. TV title matches have a time limit of 6:05. I read last week that Mackenzie signed with NWA. She’s a young Black woman whom I’ve seen across the Tennessee scene, and Carmen confirmed this is her NWA debut. Kenzie Paige joined Carmen on commentary. Shaw and Morgan immediately traded forearm strikes. Shaw hit a Magic Screw twisting neckbreaker off the ropes.

Morgan stomped on Shaw in the corner and delivered a stiff kick to Gisele’s spine. Shaw hit a half-nelson suplex at 3:30. Shaw hit some clotheslines, then a spinebuster for a nearfall. Morgan hit a dropkick and a faceplant for a nearfall at 5:00 — she’s running out of time! Morgan hit a running penalty kick for a nearfall. (There is NOT an on-screen countdown clock.) Shaw hit a spin kick to the side of the head, a backbreaker over the knee, and a faceplant for a nearfall. We just hit the 6:05 mark! Morgan hit a superkick and got a rollup for a nearfall. Gisele hit a hard back elbow to the back of the head for the pin.

Gisele Shaw defeated Mackenzie Morgan to retain the NWA Women’s TV Title at 6:44 (and my time is right, bell-to-bell!)

* Kenzie left commentary to go get ready for her match.

3. Clara Carter vs. Liviyah. I’ve seen Clara a lot recently on shows in North Carolina; she wore a big peacock outfit on her back, and she yelled at the crowd. (I knew that blonde teenager Liviyah and Kylie Alexa weren’t at the Beyond Wrestling “Americanrana” because they were here instead.) They locked up, and both appeared to be about 5’8″. Liviyah grabbed her by the waist and threw her to the mat. Carter dropped Liv with a shoulder tackle; Liviyah hit her own shoulder tackle.

Carmen confirmed that Liv is still just 19 but has been wrestling since she was 12. (She is a second-generation wrestler so that’s not really surprising.) Liviyah hit a running Penalty Kick on the apron. Clara slammed Liv’s leg around the ring post at 2:00. Back in the ring, Clara was in charge and targeted the left leg. She got up and yelled at the crowd and the ref, then hit a second-rope Vader Bomb for a nearfall at 4:30. Liviyah hit a big powerslam, and they were both down.

Carmen said this is the fifth anniversary of the first Empowerrr event. Liv hit some clotheslines, then a German Suplex for a nearfall at 6:00. Liv went for a missile dropkick, but Clara caught the legs and flipped Liv over into a Boston Crab. Liv got an inside cradle for a nearfall. Liv hit a snap suplex, then her implant DDT for the pin! Good action, and it’s great to see Liv get a big win.

Liviyah defeated Clara Carter at 7:23.

4. Paige Collet and Sirena Veil vs. Corinne Joy and Alexandra Quinn. Veil is a vampire character, and she carried her goblet and drank from it. Carmen noted that Joy and Quinn were trained by AR Fox. I’ve noted Quinn is similar to Trish Adora but thicker, while Corinne reminds me a lot of Willow Nightingale and former WWE diva Layla El. Quinn and Paige opened. I haven’t seen Paige before — she’s white with long blonde hair almost reaching her rear. Quinn hit some forearm strikes, then some chops in the corner.

Corinne entered and hit a running buttbump on Collet for a nearfall at 2:00. Quinn tossed Joy onto Paige for a nearfall. Veil entered for the first time and kicked Joy, then licked Corinne’s cheek. Carmen noted that Joy is also only 19. Veil tied her in the Tree of Woe and kicked Corinne in her exposed stomach. Corinne nailed a superkick at 4:00. Quinn got back in and hit a backbreaker over her knee on Veil, then a vicious German Suplex for a nearfall. From the floor, Paige grabbed Quinn’s ankle. It allowed Veil to hit a Saito Suplex on Quinn, then a knee strike to the jaw for a nearfall.

Sirena licked Quinn’s cheek, too, then threw Quinn shoulder-first into the corner. Quinn hit a spin kick to the side of the head, and both wrestlers were down at 6:00. Joy got the hot tag and hit some clotheslines on Veil, then a side kick. Joy hit a handspring-back-elbow into the corner, then a buttbump in the corner. Joy and Quinn hit a team suplex for a nearfall at 7:30, but Paige made the save. Those two each hit forearm strikes on Paige, then a high-low strike for a nearfall. Sirena grabbed Joy, hit a Sister Abigail swinging faceplant, and scored the pin on Corinne. Good action.

Paige Collet and Sirena Veil defeated Corinne Joy and Alexandra Quinn at 8:19.

(There have been YouTube commercials, but they have come on between matches thus far!)

5. Carson Drake vs. Effy. Yes, a men’s match! Drake reminds me a lot of the pompous, young Alex Riley (who was mentored by The Miz). He’s a smarmy prettyboy. I’ve only seen him a few times. “I’d like to address the elephant in the room, and I’m not talking about this girl right here,” Carson said while pointing into the crowd. Drake noted we lost a music icon in Tim Curry this week, “as well as an egomaniacal, horrible human being in Dolly Parton.” Loud boos for that. Carmen said Dolly grew up just minutes from here!

Effy charged into the ring, hit some punches, and we’re underway! Effy backed Carson into a corner and hit some punches. They brawled to the floor. I’ve noted multiple times that Effy is deceptively tall and thick, and he was in charge. Drake shoved Effy into the ring post at 4:00. They got back into the ring, with Carson in charge. Effy hit his Earthquake-style butt drop to Carson’s chest at 6:00, then another one. More basic brawling.

Effy hit his second-rope Blockbuster at 9:00, then a Helluva Kick, and he dragged Drake to the mat for a nearfall. Drake accidentally struck the ref! She barked at him. However, the ref had fallen into the ropes, causing Effy to fall from the top turnbuckle and be crotched in the corner. They traded forearm strikes in the corner until Carson collapsed to the mat. Drake hit a Jarrett-style Stroke faceplant for the pin. Solid match.

Carson Drake defeated Effy at 11:37.

* Intermission went about 15 minutes.

6. “The Country Gentlemen” AJ Cazana and KC Cazana (w/Joe Cazana) vs. “Pretty Empowered” Kenzie Paige and Kylie Alexa. Again, AJ is probably in his mid-30s, KC is probably 20, and Joe Cazana is likely in his late 60s. A huge pop for the sisters. The women are both around 5’2″, so they are giving up a lot of size to the men. Carson Drake joined commentary, and he explained that the guys are at a disadvantage because they are “gentlemen” who don’t fight women. AJ and Kylie locked up, and he easily shoved her to the mat.

All four fought in the ring, as the guys hit shoulder thrusts to the women’s ribs. Joe Cazana got into the ring and was going to strike the women, but a young, white guy named Tommy Henry grabbed Joe Cazana’s book. Joe fled. Tommy punted the book onto the stage. Kylie got on the mic at 4:00 and said this was now a six-person tag! Kenzie hit a huracanrana on KC. Joe dropped Paige with a shoulder tackle, then hit an armdrag. Kenzie hit a shotgun dropkick into the corner, then repeated punches on Joe Cazana.

Carson complained about the officiating. The Cazanas worked over Kenzie and kept her in their corner. Kenzie hit a stunner at 10:00, and she finally tagged in Kylie. She went for a crossbody block, but KC caught her. She spun KC to the mat and hit a running knee strike for a nearfall. The guys began working over Kylie. Kylie hit a dropkick into the corner. Tommy Henry tagged in at 13:30, but Joe Cazana struck him from behind with a book and pinned Henry. Lame finish.

* The sisters hit low blows on each of the Cazanas.

7. “La Princesa” Tiffany Nieves (w/Greta, Shemar Amor) vs. Big Alice Crowley (w/Paige Collet) in a no-DQ match for the NWA Women’s Title. Again, Big Al reminds me a lot of Skye Blue or a young Elayna Black. Nieves sent her lackeys to the back before the bell. Sal Rinauro now joined Carmen on commentary. They brawled. Shemar jumped into the ring and attacked Crowley. The commentators noted it was just seconds ago that Tiffany sent the henchwomen to the back! Tiffany hit a Thesz Press and some punches.

They fought to the floor and traded chops. Al grabbed a crutch and jabbed it into Tiffany’s throat at 4:00, then choked Nieves against the guardrail. They went past the guardrails and into the crowd. They finally got back into the ring at 7:00, with Nieves in charge. She hit an Eat D’Feat and applied an ankle lock. Paige got into the ring, so Greta also got into the ring. Greta again chokeslammed Paige at 8:30! Al got a rollup for a nearfall. Greta grabbed Al and chokeslammed her. Greta grabbed Tiffany and threw her onto the prone Big Al for the tainted pin.

Tiffany Nieves defeated Big Al to retain the NWA Women’s Title at 9:31.

Final Thoughts: A solid show. I felt it had a strong first half, but the second half was lackluster. I thought Clara and Liviyah had a really good back-and-forth match that was easily the best here. Despite going over the time limit, Gisele vs. Morgan was good for second. The Corinne Joy tag match takes third. So yes, the first three matches were the best of the show.

The mixed tag after intermission never clicked. The guys were just too big, and the beatdown on Kenzie just went on a bit too long. The guy the sisters had join them didn’t seem to know what he was doing out there. Then, the main event was just a standard brawl at ringside, and all the outside interference was like a poorly booked Jarrett-era TNA main event. Make no mistake, I like Kenzie Paige, Kylie Alexa, Big Al and Tiffany Nieves… but the booking here did none of them any favors.

Certainly a positive to see NWA investing in so many young talents, though. A really good core of young, impressive women here. Outside of 37-year-old Gisele Shaw, I think the next oldest woman in action here was Kenzie Paige, who is only 24. Several impressive young teens. If NWA wants to get me back as a regular follower, they need to make a similar investment in a young male roster, too.

The show clocked in at about two hours.
