Glory Pro Wrestling “Women’s World Crown” results: Vetter’s review of Allie Katch vs. Nixi XS, Vert Vixen vs. Rachel Armstrong, Steph De Lander vs. Gianna Capri, and Sloane Jacobs vs. Blair Onyx in first-round matches

Edwardsville is located in the northeast corner of the St. Louis metro area. I’m a sucker for tournaments and all-women’s shows, and I’ve been waiting all week for this to be released.

This venue is a generic, white meeting room with a somewhat low ceiling. Lighting is good, and the crowd was maybe 150. The ring is short and low to the floor. Sophie King and Barracus provided commentary. I’ll point out we have a female ring announcer and two female referees.

1. Vert Vixen vs. Rachel Armstrong in a first-round tournament match. Rachel just returned from an injury. She’s only around 5’1″ and she’s giving up a lot of height, overall size, and ring experience to the talented Vixen. Standing switches to open, and Vert worked the left arm and applied a standing headlock. Rachel hit some armdrags and a shotgun dropkick into the corner, then a second-rope moonsault for a nearfall at 3:00. They traded forearm strikes, and Vert hit a Dragonscrew Legwhip for a nearfall.

Vert hit a clothesline for a nearfall, then a snap suplex for a nearfall at 4:30, and she tied up the left leg on the mat, and she stayed in charge. Rachel finally hit some flying forearms at 6:30. Rachel hit a DDT for a nearfall. Vert dropped her snake-eyes, then hit a vicious German Suplex. She hit a Heliuva Kick, but Rachel avoided the Blue Thunder Bomb. Moments later, Vert hit the Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall at 8:00. Rachel yanked Vert to the mat by her hair and launched off the ropes to hit a tornado DDT for a nearfall. Rachel missed a top-rope double stomp. Vert immediately hit a Maifa Kick, then a Snow Plow Driver for the pin. A really good opener.

Vert Vixen defeated Rachel Armstrong at 9:36 to advance.

2. Steph De Lander vs. Gianna Capri in a first-round tournament match. Great to see a WWE ID prospect in the tournament. SDL came out, grabbed the mic, and immediately told the crowd, “I hate it here.” (I’ve seen her cut more-or-less the same promo recently in several states — she doesn’t like anywhere but her home in Orlando!) Sophie King said these two have fought before. Capri flipped SDL a few times. They are both really tall — both at or close to 5’11”. Capri hit the splits across Steph’s chest for a nearfall, and De Lander rolled to the floor to regroup at 1:30.

In the ring, Steph repeatedly kicked her in the corner. She hit a clothesline for a nearfall, then a pair of snap suplexes at 3:30. Ginna hit a suplex, and they were both down. Gianna again did the splits while pushing one foot into Steph’s throat in a corner. Steph hit a suplex for a nearfall at 5:30. Capri jumped on SDL’s back and applied a choke, but Steph eventually shrugged her off and hit a Mafia Kick for a nearfall. Steph got a drink, but the ref confiscated it. Capri got a rollup, but Steph got a foot on the ropes at 7:00. Steph got a rollup, put her feet on the ropes, and got the tainted pin!

Steph De Lander defeated Gianna Capri at 7:07 to advance.

3. Allie Katch vs. Nixi XS for the World Crown Title AND a first-round tournament match. Fashionista and gay icon Nixi always draws quite a pop. Nixi pointed at the belt and shouted, “That’s going to look way better on me.”  Nixi tied her in a headlock on the mat early on. Katch applied a leg lock around the neck. Nixi hit a clothesline at 2:00 and repeatedly slammed the back of Katch’s head into the mat. She hit a spinning leg lariat in the corner, grabbed her fan, and cooled herself down, then threw the fan onto Katch.

Allie hit her buttbump in the corner at 4:00. Nixi hit an inverted neckbreaker over her knee. Katch hit her piledriver, but Nixi rolled on top for a nearfall. Nixi hit her second-rope flying Lungblower to the chest for a nearfall at 5:30, and she jawed at the referee. Allie hit a jumping piledriver out of nowhere for the pin. Solid action.

Allie Katch defeated Nixi XS at 6:28 to retain the World Crown Title and advance in the tournament.

4. Sloane Jacobs vs. Blair Onyx in a first-round tournament match. The commentators wondered if this was Jacobs’ first-ever match in the St. Louis region. Blair wore black but had long fingernails today. Sloane flipped her to the mat and jawed at her. They tied up and were fairly close in size. Sloane tied a leg lock around the neck. Blair got some armdrags into rollups. She bit Jacobs’ forearm at 2:00! Sloane dropped her throat-first over the top rope, hit a Mafia Kick, mounted Blair, and repeatedly punched her.

Sloane hit a leg drop across the right elbow and choked Blair in the ropes. Sloane hit a neckbreaker out of the ropes, then a back suplex for a nearfall at 5:00. They hit stereo spin kicks to the head, then stereo clotheslines, and were both down. Blair hit a hard back elbow that dropped Sloane, then a sliding clothesline for a nearfall at 7:30. Sloane nailed a spin kick to the ear, then a Gory Bomb faceplant for a believable nearfall. She hit a stunner, but Blair creepily pulled herself back up. Blair hit a stunner. Sloane rammed Blair’s head into the turnbuckles. Sloane applied a Muta Lock and cranked on Blair’s head until Onyx tapped out. Good action.

Sloane Jacobs defeated Blair Onyx at 9:29 to advance.

5. Steph De Lander vs. Vert Vixen in a semifinals tournament match. They took turns playing to the crowd, and of course, Steph struck her from behind, and we’re underway! Vert dropped her with a shoulder tackle. SDL rolled to the floor to regroup. Vert followed, and they traded chops as they looped the walls and over by the bar. (This is the first match that has left the ring!) They each got a drink, consumed it, then resumed fighting. They completed a loop of the whole room and got back into the ring at 3:30.

Steph hit a snap suplex for a nearfall. She hit a hard clothesline for a nearfall. Vert nailed a Disaster Kick at 5:30, then a snap Exploder Suplex for a nearfall. Vert nailed a discus forearm strike, and they were both down. Steph hit a Mafia Kick and a fisherman’s buster for a nearfall at 7:30. Steph hit a spear for a nearfall. SDL got a rollup with her feet on the ropes (how she won her first match!), but this time the ref saw it and stopped counting. Vert immediately hit a fisherman’s buster for the pin! Good action.

Vert Vixen defeated Steph De Lander at 8:46 to advance to the finals.

6. Allie Katch vs. Sloane Jacobs for the World Crown Title and a semifinals tournament match. They locked up at the bell; Sloane is an inch or two taller, but Katch might have the overall size advantage. Katch applied a headlock and dragged her to the mat. Sloane hit some knee lifts to the ribs on the ring apron. Katch clotheslined her back into the ring at 1:30. Sloane hit some elbow drops, and she stood on Katch’s chest. Sloane hit a spin kick to the side of the head at 3:30, then a guillotine leg drop, and another for a nearfall.

Allie tried a Buckle Bomb, but Sloane landed fairly softly in the corner. Katch hit her buttbump in the corner, then her rolling cannonball for a nearfall at 5:00. Katch hit a Northern Lights Suplex for a nearfall. Sloane slammed her face-first on the turnbuckle, then hit a Magic Screw twisting neckbreaker out of the ropes for a nearfall at 6:30. Katch countered with an Eat D’Feat for a nearfall. Sloane again applied a Muta Lock, but Katch reached the ropes. (I love the callbacks to earlier matches!) They got up and traded forearm strikes, then traded spin kicks. Katch got a backslide, then a leaping piledriver, for the pin! That was a strong match.

Allie Katch defeated Sloane Jacobs at 8:51 to advance to the finals.

7. Anna Ray vs. Shooter Shylynn vs. Leela Feist vs. Celest in a four-way. I’ve suddenly seen Anna several times in recent weeks; she’s tall, slender, with long brown hair halfway down her back. Shooter has a big frame and is clearly a powerhouse; I’m not sure I’ve seen her before. Feist wore pink, had some pink in her hair, and carried a real, live cat with her to the ring. She gave it to a ref to take away. Celest was fired up; she had long, curly hair and wore pink. Shooter knocked Anna down with a forearm strike, and everyone tried a rollup.

Feist hit an enzuigiri on Shylynn. Anna hit a short-arm clothesline on Feist and slammed her face-first to the mat for a nearfall at 2:30. Celest hit a hard back elbow and a basement dropkick on Anna Ray for a nearfall. Shooter hit a Dragon Suplex on Celest and put he rin a Torture Rack and violently shook her! Shylynn hit a TKO stunner, and she splashed Celest in a corner. Anna got back in and hit a LOUD slap across Shooter’s face! Shooter slapped her back at 5:00. Anna Ray hit a tornado DDT on Shylynn. Leist hit a double underhook suplex. Shooter hit a fisherman’s buster on Celest for the pin! Wisely kept to this length.

Shooter Shylynn defeated Anna Ray, Leela Feist and Celest at 5:47.

8. “The Collab” Laynie Luck and Shazza McKenzie vs. Veronica West and Lilith Khan for the United Glory Tag Team Titles. West (formerly Veronica Haven and Fallyn Grey) wore her fallen angel wings. I just saw Khan in a four-way from Arkansas, where Veronica was one of the opponents. Khan is at least 6’0″, and she’s an imposing figure. Luck also had her WWE ID Women’s Title belt. Shazza and Veronica — the shorter woman on each team — opened and traded rollups. West quickly tagged in Khan, who just towers over Shazza! Khan shoved Shazza to the mat, so Shazza got on Laynie’s shoulders.

In some good humor, West tried to push Khan on her shoulders — that wasn’t happening! So, West got on Khan’s shoulders so the ladies could ‘chicken fight.’ The Collab both tied an opponent in an Octopus Stretch at 2:30. Khan hit a sideslam to escape. Luck low-bridged the top rope, causing Lilith to fall to the floor. The Collab hit stereo basement dropkicks on Veronica. Khan got back in and hit a hard boot on Luck at 4:00! West tied Luck in a modified Tarantula. Khan scooped up teammate West and bodyslammed her onto Luck for a nearfall.

West hit an X-Factor on Luck for a nearfall. Khan hit a frying pan handed chop on Luck! Ouch! Khan hit a World’s Strongest Slam at 6:30. Khan again slammed West onto Luck for a nearfall. Laynie hit a knee lift on Veronica, and they hit double hair-mare faceplants and were both down at 8:00. Shazza and Khan tagged in, and Shazza hit a running knee to the back. She hit her Yes Kicks as Khan was tied in the ropes. Khan and Shazza fought in the corner; Shazza dropped underneath and hit a powerbomb for a nearfall!

Laynie hit a pump kick on Khan. West hit a double dropkick through the ropes onto the Collab at 10:00, then a top-rope crossbody block to the floor onto them. In the ring, Khan hit a Samoan Drop on Laynie. West nailed a running knee on Shazza. Shazza avoided Khan’s chokeslam. Khan accidentally kicked West! The Collab hit running knees on Lilith. Laynie hit an Athena-style flying stunner on Khan for the pin. That was really entertaining.

9. Alllie Katch vs. Vert Vixen for the World Crown Title and the tournament finals. An intense lockup at the bell, and they pushed against the ropes as they stayed locked up. They rolled to the floor, still locked up, and Vert flipped her to the mat in a headlock. Vert hit a Dragonscrew Legwhip as they re-entered the ring at 3:00, and she worked the leg. Vert wrapped the damaged left leg around the ring post. Vert wrapped the leg in the ropes and kept Katch grounded.

Katch limped as she ran across the ring but still hit a rolling cannonball for a nearfall at 7:30. (The commentators haven’t noted that Katch broke that leg a year ago early in a big GCW show.) They traded rollups. Vert barely grazed her on a Disaster Kick. She hit a Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall, and they were both down at 9:30. Katch hit a Northern Lights Suplex for a nearfall. Vert applied a half-crab, but Allie reached the ropes at 11:00.

Vert pulled her back to the middle of the ring and cranked hard on the leg! Katch hit an enzuigiri, and they were both down. They got up and traded hard forearm strikes! We got a “Fight forever!” chant. Vert hit a piledriver along her back for a nearfall at 14:00. They rolled to the floor and traded forearm strikes. Allie hit a headbutt, and they were both down. As they re-entered the ring, Katch hit her piledriver out of the ropes for the pin! That was really, really good. They hugged afterwards, and Vert raised Allie’s hand.

Allie Katch defeated Vert Vixen at 16:00 to retain the World Crown Title and win the tournament.

* Katch cut a backstage promo, boasting about winning three times tonight. She’ll be back in October to defend the belt.

Final Thoughts: Wow, that was a really good show. I’ve seen all eight women in the tournament multiple times, and that’s a top-notch set of competitors. I’ll go with Vert vs. Sloane (semifinals) for best match, ahead of Vert vs. Allie (finals) for best match. The Collab tag match was really good for third. Blair Onyx-Sloane Jacobs was really good for honorable mention.

The four-way was okay but clearly featured newer talent and felt a bit disjointed. They wisely kept the action moving and wrapped it up in a timely manner. I liked just about everything about this show. It clocked in at about two hours, and it aired without a single pesky YouTube commercial interrupting the action.
