Leon Slater books title shot for main event

This week’s episode of TNA Impact, a rare live edition of the show, took place at the CAA Centre in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The first show since the brand’s Lockdown pay-per-view opened with an appearance from The Nemeths. Following their win over The Hardys on Sunday, Nic Nemeth is not only the TNA World Champion, but also one-half of the TNA World Tag Team Champions.

Nic got on the mic and gloated, saying he’s the most valuable man in professional wrestling. Ryan mentioned that Nic joins Kurt Angle as the only TNA stars to hold the world and tag titles simultaneously.

After a little more bragging, Nic turned his focus to Bound for Glory opponent Leon Slater. The Briton up-and-comer relinquished his X-Division Championship on Sunday, cashing in “Option C” to face Nic for his world title at the next PPV. Nic told kids to bet on themselves, unless it’s against him.

This caused Slater to come out and get on the mic. He told the Brampton fans that he has a habit of saying things and getting it done, and that he’s set on becoming TNA’s youngest world champ ever. But Slater started to get interested in the tag titles that the Nemeths have, too. Slater reminded us that he has found a tag partner in Ricky Sosa as of late, and they’ve been undefeated as a duo.

TNA General Manager Santino Marrella (who hails from neighbouring GTA borough Mississauga) came out and loved the tag title idea, and booked it for tonight’s main event.

Elijah picks a fight with The System

Backstage, Mila Moore informed the rest of Order Four that Mustafa Ali is still in the hospital due to his match against Jason Hotch from Lockdown. Ali posted on social media this week that he suffered an injury following the match. Moore said that Ali was scheduled for tag action tonight against Hotch & Trey Miguel, and that with Ali out, John Skyler will have to take his place. Once again, Hotch is being forced to face his former tag partner tonight.

The first match of the night saw Bear Bronson go head-to-head with Elijah. Following his singles win over AJ Francis last weekend, Elijah suffered a mysterious attack backstage. Elijah was suspicious that The System was responsible for the attack (no real explanation as to why other than they’re a big bad heel faction), hence why he’s facing Bronson tonight.

A distraction from Brian Myers at ringside allowed Bronson to give Elijah a tope suicida to the floor early on. Bronson followed up with an elbow drop in the ring. Elijah tried to get back into the match but ran into a Black Hole Slam from Bronson for a two-count.

Elijah wobbled Bronson with a pair of superkicks, but once again had his momentum stopped after Bronson caught him with a sit-out powerbomb. Elijah countered a move into an Alabama Slam, then peeled him off the top turnbuckle for a tombstone piledriver for the pinfall win. This was a by-the-numbers match, albeit a little sloppy at times.

The rest of The System hit the ring for a post-match attack. If Elijah wasn’t an enemy of The System at Lockdown, he certainly was by now.

Mustafa Ali wants to call it a truce

Following her Knockouts title loss to Xia Brookside over the weekend, Elayna Black said in a backstage segment that she “can’t help but feel disappointed” that she didn’t earn the title. She reminded herself that she’s doing this for her family and those who look up to her, and because of that, she’s staying motivated and that we’re still in her era.

The next match saw John Skyler team with Special Agent 0 to face Jason Hotch and Trey Miguel. Much like when we saw Hotch vs. Skyler last week, Skyler didn’t seem too happy that he was facing a close friend in the ring during his entrance. However, for most of the match, he faced him like they’re normal opponents.

Hotch, hurt due to his physical match against Mustafa Ali over the weekend, was isolated through the break. Miguel eventually got the hot tag, scoring a springboard moonsault to Skyler as part of a long run of moves. Agent 0 pulled Skyler out of the way from a top-rope dive from Miguel.

Hotch got back into the ring and tried to give Agent 0 a rolling neckbreaker. He ran into Skyler, but stopped himself before giving him a move (this hesitation spot felt weird. They’re friends, I get it, but we saw them fighting eachother earlier in the match! It wasn’t an issue then, why was it suddenly now?). Anyway, after a scramble featuring all four, Miguel put away Skyler with a top-rope meteora for the pinfall win.

Commentary noted that both Hotch and Miguel have future International title opportunities against Ali, as they both dropped the title earlier this year and have yet to receive their automatic rematches.

After the match, we saw a hospital bed promo from Ali, who is trying to cool things down with rival Hotch: “I think you and I have taken this too far … I say we call it a truce. Hotch, what I’m proposing is we stop all of this and you re-join Order Four.”

Backstage, The Righteous approached BDE and Rich Swann. “Relax, we’re not here to fight,” Vincent said to a visibly relaxed BDE and Swann. The Righteous said they know BDE is still searching for his first big TNA win, and thus they’re going to ask the GM for BDE vs. Dutch.

TNA crowns its first Knockouts TV champion

Backstage, new TNA signing Avery Styles was being interviewed. Moose approached Styles mid-interview with some advice: “Be careful who you associate with,” he said, mentioning that he saw Styles chatting with Frankie Kazarian at Lockdown.

Kazarian entered the frame and defended his plan to be Styles’ mentor: “I’m actually looking out for this kid and making sure his career starts in the right direction.” Kazarian led Styles away from the interview.

The next segment saw TNA crown its first-ever Knockouts TV Champion. Battling for the title were M By Elegance and Jada Stone, who worked their way through a four-round single-elimination tournament in recent weeks for the opportunity. They are each fun picks to give a midcard title, both still in their early 20s and only a couple of years into their first major wrestling deals.

Stone was on a roll early, scoring a missile dropkick out of the corner then a standing moonsault for a two-count. M scored a nasty German Suplex onto the ring apron as they went to ringside. Back in the ring, a gnarly Falcon Arrow from M caused a near fall of her own.

Stone took quite the prolonged beatdown by M, including an awesome Tower of London out of the corner for a two-count (commentary gave a shoutout to Dezmond Wolfe at this point). Stone eventually found an opening by dodging a top-rope moonsault from M.

Stone connected with a hurricanrana, dropkick, then a 619. Stone got a two-count after giving M a double stomp. A Spark Stunner was dodged by M. M had an awesome counter for Stone’s split-legged moonsault, catching her for a Blue Thunder Bomb. Stone tried for a springboard moonsault, but M blocked the move by putting up her knees.

M followed up with a gutwrench powerbomb. She climbed to the top for a move, but Stone met her up there and connected with a huge Spanish Fly! Stone then got into the corner and connected with a corkscrew splash! She went for a pin, but M got a foot on the bottom rope (they both awkwardly rolled near the ropes before the pin, making this break quite predictable).

M countered a Spark Stunner into a roll-up pin attempt. After a pair of roll-ups, M caught Stone with a piledriver for the pinfall win. There were some small hiccups here and there, but these two honestly had a great showcase. Credit to TNA for giving this bout a decent chunk of time on the show.

Zoey Serrano joins the Knockouts division

We saw a backstage clip where Jeff Hardy was being loaded into an ambulance. He was mysteriously attacked.

Indi Hartwell, who has her eyes on Xia Brookside’s Knockouts title, came to the ring for the next segment. While she’s usually easygoing, Hartwell said she’s “pissed off” after hearing that Daria Rae doesn’t feel she’s deserving of a title shot.

Hartwell made a case for the shot, saying she’s in her prime and won’t let anyone stand in her way. Rae came out and said Hartwell is “horribly mediocre.” She said that Hartwell hasn’t brought money to the company, and thus won’t get opportunities.

These two traded insults for a couple of minutes. Hartwell said she would become champ with or without Rae. “Okay, good luck with that,” Rae said.

Hartwell was suddenly dropped by someone who charged the ring. Who was it? Zoey Serrano, formerly Zoey Stark in WWE! Rae announced moments later that Serrano is TNA’s newest signing. A good, if even predictable, pickup for TNA.

After the break, it was announced backstage that Hartwell & Harley Hudson will face Serrano and Brookside next week.

We saw a teaser air for “30-second takedown,” a series that will premiere on TNA+ after Bound for Glory. It looks like some sort of real competition between collegiate/freestyle wrestlers. The clip showed two dozen or so men huddled around a stage, taking turns battling it out in wrestling exchanges.

The Nemeths defend tag titles for the first time

The main event saw The Nemeths defend the TNA World Tag Team Championships for the first time, taking on the duo of Ricky Sosa and Leon Slater.

Slater scored a near fall early on after giving Ryan his Utopia Blue Thunder Bomb. Slater found himself stuck in the ring against the Nemeths as the show returned from a break. Sosa got the hot tag eventually, giving Nic a powerslam then springboard moonsault for a two-count. A twisting neckbreaker caused another near fall a minute later.

A slight distraction from Ryan allowed Nic to connect with a high-angle DDT. Nic started to set up for a superkick, but Sosa countered the move into a huge Blue Thunder Bomb.

Sosa tagged in Slater, who connected with a Swanton 450. He went for the pin, but was pulled out of the ring by Ryan! That move likely stopped their title reign from ending after just a few days.

Sosa tagged back in and connected with a top-rope cutter, but it somehow wasn’t enough to put away Nemeth. That seemed a little egredious: He took a Swanton 450, then a springboard cutter but still continues on? Maybe a nitpick, but I didn’t love that.

Sosa hit the ropes but had his legs held by Ryan at ringside. Slater took out Ryan with his Big Play Slater dive over the ring post. This distracted Sosa again, allowing Nic to score a superkick. Sosa survived the Superkick, then reversed a Famouser into a powerbomb for another near fall. Again, not sure why Nic is surviving so many big moves in such a short window of time.

Sosa tried for his Headshot, but Nemeth caught him mid-air for a Danger Zone, earning him the pinfall win. I thought the finish spamming at the end wasn’t great, but the crowd was red hot for this match and I did enjoy how much of a spotlight it put on Sosa, who I believe has a high ceiling.
