WWE reportedly had plenty to celebrate following Friday night’s SmackDown in Toronto, with the event said to have established a new financial benchmark for the company in the city.
According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, the talk circulating backstage was that Friday’s show became the highest-grossing WWE SmackDown ever held in Toronto.
The strong gate came alongside an impressive turnout at Scotiabank Arena. Dave Meltzer reported in Friday’s Daily Update that 15,526 tickets had been distributed for the event.
WWE had given fans plenty of advance notice regarding the night’s major attraction, announcing CM Punk’s WWE Championship defence against Kevin Owens around two weeks before the show.
Toronto has hosted several major editions of SmackDown in recent years, although attendance figures have varied considerably.
The February 28, 2025 episode, staged one night before WWE Elimination Chamber, reportedly attracted 11,905 fans.
SmackDown on July 5, 2024 reportedly drew just under 17,000 fans, while the August 18, 2023 show at Scotiabank Arena had a reported attendance of 14,291. That particular event was heavily promoted around what was billed at the time as Edge’s final WWE match.
While Friday’s reported record relates to the amount of money generated rather than simply the number of people inside the building, the figure underlines another strong showing for WWE in the Toronto market.
The evening concluded with Punk successfully retaining the WWE Championship against Owens. The finish did not come without controversy, however, as Sami Zayn became involved before Punk ultimately secured the victory.
