Zilla Fatu’s Rough First Week in WWE
Since its inception, NXT has been WWE‘s proving ground, the place where both indie stars and talent new to professional wrestling perfect the craft with hopes of becoming the next big superstars on the main rosters. Some never make it, while others have gone on to become the leaders of the company. Today, you can see how Oba Femi, Trick Williams, and Bron Breakker, all once the faces of NXT, are going to be legends on Raw and SmackDown.
This past week, a new talent emerged on NXT named Zilla Fatu. As the son of the late Umaga, Fatu is another member of the never-ending Bloodline family tree. His arrival was met with a ton of excitement, but then came the follow-up, which showed he might not be ready for primetime. If WWE isn’t careful, they’ll ruin Zilla before he even has a chance to succeed.
The Son of Umaga Shocked in His WWE NXT Debut
- Umaga was only 36 when he died in 2009.
- Zilla Fatu was trained by WWE Hall of Famer Booker T.
- Zilla attacked Cruz Montana and Grayson Waller when he arrived in NXT.
If you’re of a certain age, you’re very familiar with Zilla Fatu’s father. Edward Smith Fatu first rose to fame in WWE in the early 2000s as Jamal in the tag team 3-Minute Warning. After leaving the company, he returned years later as the terrifying Umaga. Sadly, he passed away in 2009 at just the age of 36, leaving behind four children, including Zilla, who was only 10.
Zilla Fatu was trained by WWE and WCW legend Booker T. He made his pro wrestling arrival in 2023, working for Booker T’s Reality of Wrestling. He came across as cocky at first, even parting ways with Booker, before making up with the Hall of Famer. Finally, after three years on the indie circuit, Zilla made his NXT debut on August 11, 2026. Allowed to keep his ring name (which isn’t so common these days), Fatu made an immediate impact by laying out Cruz Montana and Grayson Waller in their number one contender’s match for the NXT Championship. Straight away, Fatu was put at the top of the card. But does he deserve it?
- Zilla Fatu had a generic wardrobe that made him look like The Rock.
- His Def Rebel theme was awful, and included an attempt at a forced chant.
- Fatu mispoke in a hilarious way when he tried to tell the audience that he’s not a nepo baby.
A week later, on August 18, Zilla Fatu delivered his first NXT promo. It didn’t go so well. First came his entrance, with Fatu wearing sunglasses and an open shirt like he was The Rock in 1998. It certainly wasn’t an original look, and felt like forced nostalgia. Then there was his awful Def Rebel theme (can we get Jim Johnston back, please?), a generic mess that sounded like AI garbage, with shouts of “Zilla” over and over as a way of trying to force the audience to chant for him.
Things like that can quickly be overcome. Then Zilla spoke. He wasn’t particularly bad per se, but more of a stereotype of how a wrestler should sound. A few fans shouting “Hello!” every time he took a break to catch his break is certainly going to get annoying. Then it happened. As Fatu was trying to sound badass, announcing he’d arrived, he misspoke in the most embarrassing way possible.
“My goal is to show you guys I’m not just another nympho baby. That I’m here to let my talent speak for itself.” (ht Cageside Seats)
Obviously, he meant to say “nepo baby,” referencing his family ties, and how he had gotten here on his own. Instead, he made a hilarious, sexual remark. It’s funny, and he can laugh it off and get past it. Still, the moment may have truly said something about Zilla’s talent speaking for itself. He might not be ready for such a big spotlight so fast.
WWE Can’t Push Zilla Fatu Too Fast
- Fatu is in the NXT Championship Fatal 4-Way at NXT Heatwave.
- He is going to lose his very first WWE match.
- Zilla should work his way up through developmental and be allowed to grow.
Wrestlers flub lines. It happens. But to do so in such a cringe way in your very first WWE promo isn’t a good look. It just adds to the belief that Zilla is only here because of his dad and his lineage. After all, he’s only been wrestling for three years and in smaller promotions. That whole time, he was being groomed for WWE.
There’s nothing wrong with it either, had he come to NXT and started at the bottom, working his way up through developmental. Instead, Fatu has the silver spoon, and his very first match will have him compete for the NXT Championship! How has he deserved that?! Unless WWE books a shocker which they shouldn’t even consider, Fatu is then going to lose his first match as well. He’s starting off with a failure.
Zilla Fatu has a chance to be great. To do so, he must be given time. His rough first week shows that he’s still green and not ready for such an incredible push. Let him have time to breathe and grow. Rushing him to the top immediately is even worse than making him a member of the Bloodline. WWE has potential gold with this guy. Don’t mess with it because you want to capitalize on his lineage. Capitalize on who he is as a person and wrestler. For that to happen, NXT must pump the brakes before Zilla Fatu looks like an overwhelmed fish out of water.
