Mackenzie Dern retains strawweight championship in dominant performance at UFC 330 – POST Wrestling

Mackenzie Dern was never in trouble over twenty-five minutes as she made the first defense of her strawweight championship.

The UFC 330 co-headliner between Dern and Gillian Robertson failed to excite the audience in Philadelphia despite attempts by Dern to submit the challenger early in the fight.

Robertson entered the fight on a five-fight winning streak but presented few problems for the superior grappler until the fifth round.

Dern nearly finished the fight in the opening five minutes after taking Robertson down and taking control of her back. With both hooks applied, Dern applied a choke, but Robertson lifted her thumb to signal she was okay and survived the round.

Dern continued a strategy of takedowns and working for submissions with seamless transitions to mount and back control, but was unable to lock in any submissions as Robertson defended.

Dern was clearly ahead after four rounds, with most scoring all the rounds for the champion until the fifth. Robertson secured a takedown of her down in the final frame and forced Dern to defend off her back for most of the round. Robertson picked up the pace in her strikes, especially in the final minute, to take a moral victory by winning the last round.

The judges scored the bout 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 for Dern as she improves to 17-5 and wins her fourth fight in a row.

Dern won the vacant title, beating Virna Jandiroba at UFC 321 last October after Zhang Weili gave up the title to pursue championship aspirations at flyweight.
