This Is Lowkey The Worst Booked Championship In WWE
When looking across WWE programming over the last couple of years, things have been far from perfect in several divisions. Triple H’s booking of various parts of the men’s and women’s divisions has been inconsistent here and there, but there is one division and championship that has arguably been the worst handled of the whole bunch. The Women’s World Championship was introduced in 2023, replacing the SmackDown Women’s Title, and despite a fairly strong start, things went downhill and have remained that way ever since despite some very talented titleholders, making it lowkey one of the worst booked championships in the company.
The Current State Of The Women’s World Championship Is A Mess
- Liv Morgan’s title reign was a complete disaster.
- Stephanie Vaquer vs. Becky Lynch vs. Liv Morgan is a poor storyline.
- There is zero creativity in the Women’s World Title scene.
In 2026, the Women’s World Championship has been in a disastrous place. Liv Morgan’s title win at WrestleMania 42 led to months worth of inactivity, sitting on the sidelines through both injury and a lack of being booked, serving more as a cheerleader to her Judgment Day allies. The world champion took a backseat to the Intercontinental Championship, she was for some reason thrust into the Queen Of The Ring tournament, and defended the belt just once in four months. The returns of Stephanie Vaquer and Becky Lynch injected some much needed life into the title scene, but even this has quickly gone south.
Vaquer won the Women’s World Title on a house show in Chile, which on the surface was a fun moment, before it emerged that this was solely an advertising point for “Club WWE”. From there, a pretty bland three-way feud has emerged, following every generic storyline point that WWE feuds often follow – backstage interviews leading to brawls, interfering in matches, post-match attacks, and no contests, all without any real storyline development. The worst example of this came on the road to Money In The Bank 2026 when Vaquer attacked both Lynch & Morgan during a number one contenders to match to cause a double DQ and triple threat – it was pure laziness.
Triple H’s Booking Of Rhea Ripley, Iyo Sky & Others Has Been Lackluster
- Rhea Ripley vs. Liv Morgan was a never-ending feud.
- Iyo Sky seldom defended the Women’s World Title.
- Stephanie Vaquer has had no memorable matches or feuds.
Over the last few years, many talented names in the form of Rhea Ripley, Iyo Sky, Stephanie Vaquer, Becky Lynch, Naomi, and Liv Morgan have held the Women’s World Championship, but almost all of these names have been mishandled. Ripley’s dominant run as champion between 2023 and 2024 was dominated by Judgment Day shenanigans, predictable defenses, and no real feuds, all until her rivalry with Liv Morgan began which stretched on for way too long and became one of WWE’s most tiresome angles. Their matches were poor, Dominik Mysterio was too much of a focus, and fans got sick and tired of it.
Heading into WrestleMania 41, fans were looking forward to seeing both Iyo Sky & Bianca Belair thrown into the title scene, only for WWE to book one of the most boring, basic, and inconsistent storylines of WrestleMania season in which both Ripley & Belair were portrayed as petty and whiny, and Sky was treated as an afterthought. Their show-stealing match distracted from poor booking, but it is important to remember Triple H’s mishandling. Naomi’s Money In The Bank cash-in in 2025 turned things around in a positive manner, but her relinquishing of the gold came at an unfortunate time. Vaquer picked up the pieces, but she also had a reign of predictable matches and no feuds that stood out in any impactful way.
The Women’s World Title Doesn’t Get Defended Regularly
- The prestige of this title is low on the WWE totem pole.
- Triple H has sometimes waited months to book title defenses.
- There hasn’t been a good Women’s World Title feud for a long time.
One of the biggest problems with the Women’s World Championship scene is that the title is often sitting on the shelf without much activity. For instance, Rhea Ripley went on multiple two month stretches without a defense, Iyo Sky went for three months without any title matches between WrestleMania and Evolution 2025, and finally Liv Morgan’s 2026 reign featured just three defenses in 147 days. A lack of defenses, a low number of feuds, and a champion sitting around doing nothing does no favors for the prestige of the belt.
If champions were presented as special attraction part-timers, then perhaps it would be different (see Roman Reigns’ dominant multi-year reign as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion), but that has simply never been the case in the women’s division, with Triple H seemingly putting in way less effort into making storylines and characters engaging or special. It is easy to overlook given the talent on display and the great matches here and there, but this is lowkey WWE’s worst championship, and has been for some time.
