AJ Lee & Daniel Bryan: WWE’s Weirdest Wedding
The professional wrestling world has played host to a whole manner of weird, bizarre and surreal wedding ceremonies. Despite the sport being about in-ring action, world championships and blood feuds, the soap opera style drama of sports entertainment has often been at the forefront of WWE, leading to many wrestlers and personalities over the years tying the knot on screen. Whether it be ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage & Miss Elizabeth, Dexter Lumis & Indi Hartwell or Kane & Lita, we’ve seen several emotional and weird weddings. One of the weirdest came in 2012 when Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee were set to be married.
Daniel Bryan & AJ Lee Were In A Toxic Relationship
- Bryan & AJ became boyfriend & girlfriend in WWE.
- Bryan blamed AJ for his world title loss.
- AJ began kissing names such as CM Punk & Kane.
All the way back in 2011, Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee sparked a romantic relationship on WWE programming. However, a World Heavyweight Championship victory for Bryan led to him going down a nefarious route as a heel, unfortunately leading to what would become a toxic, abusive relationship in which Bryan mistreated AJ. At Wrestlemania 28, a pre-match kiss between AJ and Bryan led to a loss of the world title to Sheamus in 18 seconds in one of the most infamous WrestleMania opening matches of all time. Things would only get worse as AJ Lee became crazed, engaging in relationships with the likes of Kane and CM Punk, all the while distracting Bryan from his various WWE Championship pursuits.
After months of back-and-forth, mind games, and turmoil, Bryan and AJ, both crazed in their own way, agreed that a wedding would be the cure to their toxicity and turbulent time as a couple. Their wedding was set for the special RAW 1000 episode which featured a whole manner of legends, returning stars, fun segments and more. In fact, the wedding of AJ Lee and Bryan was one of the biggest draws ahead of the show, but it turned out to be a disaster.
Vince McMahon & The Rock Crashed A Bizarre Wedding
- The wedding of Bryan & AJ took place on RAW 1000.
- Vince McMahon gave AJ a different proposal.
- The Rock attacked an angry Bryan after the wedding was cancelled.
On RAW 1000, Bryan & AJ were set for the happiest day of their lives. For some bizarre reason, former wrestling manager Slick was announced as the officiate, relaying the vowels of the soon-to-be married couple ahead of their communion. AJ Lee would mimic Bryan’s iconic “Yes!” chant in response to whether she agreed to this proposal – before revealing her “Yes!” was for another man who had made a proposal earlier that day. In front of a bemused WWE audience, none other than Vince McMahon appeared. Given some of the bizarre circumstances we’ve seen on WWE programming over the years, fans initially assumed that McMahon was getting married to AJ, only for him to reveal that his proposal was for AJ to become the new RAW General Manager. AJ would leave Bryan in the ring, dejected and angry.
Bryan refused to leave the ring for several minutes afterwards, angry that his special day had been ruined… and then The Rock appeared. The Rock would run down Bryan on the mic and lay him out in the middle of the ring, allowing him and CM Punk to begin the build to their WWE Championship match at the following year’s Royal Rumble. From start to finish, the wedding of Bryan and AJ was a complete fever dream. Slick, Vince McMahon, The Rock, CM Punk, secret proposals and more made up this truly strange WWE segment.
Daniel Bryan, Kane, AJ Lee & CM Punk Were Involved In A Strange Romance Storyline
- The WWE Championship was involved in this storyline.
- Bryan & Kane became allies thanks to their anger management.
- WWE weddings are nearly always weird.
The whole storyline involving Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee was one that left fans scratching their heads at times, especially given that the WWE Championship was at the very centre of it. The most prestigious prize in the company was engulfed in a love square in which AJ Lee would attempt to woo the likes of Punk & Kane, play a war of mind games with Bryan, and eventually depart all relationships in favour of becoming RAW’s new authority figure.
In the aftermath of all of this heartbreak, betrayal and romance, Bryan went down even deeper hole in terms of his sanity, all leading to him attending attending anger management classes with Kane, prompting the start of their now iconic tag team of “Team Hell No”, which only came into existence because of the after effects of this surreal WWE wedding.
