Steve Maclin is a mad man

This week’s episode of Maple Leaf Pro: Mayhem opened with a quick recap of some of the program’s top storylines. Now that they have quite a few irons in the fire, just a few weeks before Northern Rising, having this recap in here felt like a good move.

The first segment of the night was Steve Maclin, who is scheduled to face Adam Copeland at Northern Rising, going head to head with Rhino. Maclin got the jump on Rhino before the bell, attacking the ECW legend during his entrance.

Rhino regained control of the fight and was about to set up for a spear, but was stopped as Maclin pepper sprayed him in the eyes! The bell hadn’t yet rung for this match (although it probably should’ve), so this didn’t cause a DQ.

Rhino was given some time to recover and, miraculously, decided to have this match with Maclin. Moments later, a blatant referee shove mixed with a low blow to Rhino caused a disqualification end to this match. Maclin lost, but it didn’t seem like he cared. Maclin continued an attack after the bell, including a Conchairto to Rhino. He attacked one of the doctors on his way out too!

Curious if matches like this, plus the backstage brawl with Copeland last week, means they’ll upgrade their bout to a no-DQ stipulation. Seems like the right move.

Rohan Raja picks up win ahead of Northern Rising

Up next, former PWA Champion’s Grail champ Rohan Raja hit the ring for a match against CMLL’s Capitan Suicida. This was a tune-up of sorts for Raja before he takes on Andrade El Idolo at Northern Rising next month.

Suicida had a couple of hard bumps early in this match, including a tope con hilo to the floor which caused a flat landing on his back. A distraction from Raja’s manager, Aurora Teves, allowed a top-rope move from Suicida to be prevented.

Suicida scored a near fall as the show returned, catching Raja with a cutter. He followed up with a beautiful Swanton Bomb for another two-count. Another Teves distraction allowed Raja to catch him with a Flatliner for the pinfall win. Was hoping we’d get to see a little more in this one, but, like I’ve said many times before in these write ups, these shows have to work at a quick pace with the 44-minute limitation.

We got a big reveal in the latest Psycho Mike video package. The voice that’s been talking to Mike for weeks, as he’s in a downward spiral, was Crazzy Steve! We saw a video where Mike finally snapped after being confronted by Steve: “I will be what you want me to be!!!”

Wild brawl interrupts singles match

Before the main event, we saw 1st Faction manager Bryce Hansen in action. He’s been in the doghouse after talking his team into an impromptu match against Sinner & Saint last week.

Hansen got just a minute or so into his match against Mystery Wrestling vet London Lightning before veteran wrestler Dan Maff attacked them both! So, two disqualification finishes in one night. In for the save was an unleashed Psycho Mike, who took a kendo stick to Maff. With Crazzy Steve behind him, a fired-up Mike posed.

But then…. Steve struck Mike in the back with a kendo stick! That might be a world record for quickest alliance to turn in wrestling history.

We saw some new matches announced in a video package for Northern Rising:

*if Gisele Shaw can successfully defend her title on tonight’s show.

The clear initial direction was to have PCO involved in a Dan Maff storyline at Northern Rising. I assume the plan was likely something along the lines of Maff & Crazzy Steve vs. Psycho Mike & PCO. But, we saw PCO suffer a legitimate injury a few weeks back, and now it seems he’s out of the equation for next month’s show.

Priscilla Kelly takes down Gisele Shaw, captures women’s title in main event

The main event saw Maple Leaf Pro Women’s Champion Gisele Shaw put her title up against Priscilla Kelly. Nikki Storm stole the pinfall victory from Kelly in a four-way #1 contenders match a few weeks ago. Noticing that the win was basically taken from Kelly, MLP gave her a title opportunity from the result.

Kelly took an awesome bump early on: Shaw tripped her up on the ring apron, causing Kelly to fall forward and land on the floor back-first. A nasty thud. Shaw sent Kelly into steel steps before the show went to a break.

Shaw and Kelly got into a prolonged back-and-forth striking battle after the show returned from a break. Kelly caught Shaw with a hooking lariat for a near fall after a series of reversals.

Shaw connected with a modified Michinoku Driver for a two-count of her own. She locked in an STF, but Kelly escaped by transitioning into a pin attempt. Kelly scored a thrust kick then a German Suplex bridged into a pin attempt for a two.

Shaw caught a kick from Kelly then countered into her Shock & Awe (Sister Abigail), but it wasn’t enough to put away the challenger. A Shining Wizard from Shaw was avoided by Kelly, who instead came running off the ropes with her Sliding P (running forearm) for the pinfall win! Kelly is the new MLP women’s champ and will face Nikki Storm at Northern Rising.

I enjoyed this match, felt like they gave it the right amount of time to feel like a strong TV main event. I was surprised to see Kelly win here, but it was nice to get a shock result like this, as a lot of the booking has been somewhat predictable for big title matches.
