John Cena Finally Gives A Proper Answer About His Favorite Match, Kind Of

Whenever John Cena would be asked about his favorite match, he always had the same answer locked and loaded, ready to go, and that answer would always be “my next one”. Well, if The Franchise Player sticks to his word, there isn’t ever going to be a next match, which means he has been forced to actually tell the world what he believes the best match of his career was.

Somehow, though, Cena has even managed to find a workaround for that. Rather than pinpoint a specific match in the thousands he had with one of his fiercest rivals, the 17-time World Champion somehow managed to turn his new answer into a life lesson that resembles the one he used to give when always saying his favorite match is his next match.

“I would easily be like, ‘no problem, that’s my next one.’ That was my cheat code. But now I have to actually answer your question,” Cena said to fans at the Tampa Comic Convention, effectively admitting his old answer was a bit of a cop out (HT to Fightful for the transcription). “I’ve had a bunch of fun with a bunch of matches and a bunch of opponents. But I don’t think any of those matches happen if I don’t have the first one,” Cena continued.

Cena’s Favorite Match Is His First Match

Yes, at this point, you may have guessed what Cena’s answer to this question will be every time he’s asked it, and he has effectively found a post-retirement cheat code to replace the one he’d use while he was still an active wrestler. “As much as I’ve had wonderful moments. I think my first match is my favorite match because you can’t have any of the rest of them without the first one.”

While that is technically true, there would have been no more matches after the first one if not for that first one; it might be even more of a cop out answer than the “next one” response Cena used to give. You could argue that no more matches would have happened after Cena’s second match, or his third, and so on right up to his retirement match against Gunther.

Cena doesn’t even explain which match he means when he says his first one. The assumption I made was Cena’s WWE debut against Kurt Angle, which many fans would agree is a good choice. That wasn’t technically Cena’s first match, though. He wrestled countless untelevised matches before that. What fans really wanted to hear Cena say was “Oh, Money in the Bank against CM Punk”, or his match against RVD with an infamously hostile ECW crowd. Cena will never give a straight answer, though, and this will almost certainly be the one he now wheels out every time he’s asked to name his favorite match.
