Malakai Black is the new PROGRESS World Champion following an emotional return to the promotion, where he also paid tribute to his friend Andy Williams, known to wrestling fans as The Butcher.
Black defeated Cara Noir in the main event of PROGRESS Wrestling’s The Odyssey Tour on September 6 to capture the championship for the first time.
The victory ended Noir’s 126-day reign, which included two successful title defences. It also marked Black’s first match outside Dark Arts since his WWE release in April.
However, the occasion carried a much deeper meaning for Black as he spoke about the loss of Williams. Clearly affected by his friend’s passing, he asked fans to direct their cheers towards Andy.
“One of my best friends of AEW passes away, Andy Williams, I couldn’t keep it together back stage. There’s nothing that can make my heart feel less, instead of cheering for me, please cheer for Andy one final time”
The event marked Black’s first PROGRESS appearance since 2017. His earlier run saw him win the Super Strong Style 16 tournament and hold the PROGRESS Tag Team Championship, but the promotion’s world title had remained out of reach despite previous challenges.
That changed on Sunday, with Black finally adding the championship to his achievements while taking a moment to remember a friend.
Malakai Black on the rumours about him…
“There’s a lot you can doubt about me – but i can only tell that they are not, but one thing you cannot do is question my loyalty to professional wrestling” pic.twitter.com/8KdWWgeaS6
