Due to WWE heading to Mexico in the coming week, the promotion made the call to tape episodes of both Monday Night RAW and Friday Night SmackDown ahead of time, giving members of the roster some time to unwind and relax before their next big trip overseas. This means the results of the September 4 Friday Night SmackDown from the Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio are known well in advance – so let’s take a look at what went down across the show. All the spoilers and match results for the next episode of WWE’s blue brand come courtesy of PWInsider.

  • CM Punk got Johnny Gargano out of his slumber.
  • They wrestled for the WWE Championship on SmackDown.
  • Gargano main evented SmackDown in his hometown.

Johnny Gargano has been in a depressed slumber for over six months, being sent into a lull state after losing his feud to Axiom. This has led to him laying on a crate backstage, getting squashed in matches, and losing all of the credibility he had as a once great in-ring performer. However, the next episode of Friday Night SmackDown will see him seemingly saved by none other than the reigning and defending WWE Champion, CM Punk. After it was teased in recent weeks, CM Punk will approach Gargano on the September 4 edition of SmackDown, giving him what is described as a “pep talk”, offering him a shot at the WWE Championship… to which Gargano stands up and accepts.

In the main event of SmackDown in Gargano’s hometown of Cleveland, he emerges with his old “Rebel Heart” theme song to do battle with Punk in a first-time-ever matchup. In the end, shenanigans involving all of the other top contenders in the WWE Title scene such as Gunther, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and Finn Balor ensue, leading to Punk’s successful defense of the championship. Post-show, Gargano gave an impassioned speech to the fans, with this whole thing seemingly suggesting that Gargano’s recent spell and awful gimmick is over.

  • Chelsea Green is the WWE Women’s Champion.
  • She has been injured on SmackDown in recent weeks.
  • Nia Jax will challenge her for the gold.

Chelsea Green’s WWE Women’s Championship reign hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts, being threatened with having her title taken off her due to injury, before getting beaten by Nia Jax in tag team action. On SmackDown’s September 4 episode, her next challenge awaits. In another in-ring segment with SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis, it is stated that Green is still cleared to wrestle as long as she wears a face mask. This prompts the interruption of both Nia Jax & Lash Legend of the Irresistible Forces, who demand a title shot. Aldis followed through on Jax’s recent victory by granting her a WWE Women’s Championship match against Green on SmackDown in Mexico.

Aldis then announced that an impromptu singles match would take place then and there between former friends turned rivals, Nia Jax and Tiffany Stratton. The losing streak for Stratton continued on the blue brand, as the former United States Champion came up short in singles action against Nia Jax, who continued to build momentum ahead of her title challenge the following week.

Friday Night SmackDown’s September 4 edition featured several more matches and the continuation of feuds across the broadcast. The show kicked off with Gunther calling out Sami Zayn after his antics the previous week, leading to a big multi-man melee in which Kevin Owens & Finn Balor also emerged to chase off Zayn, with all three men now having a common enemy. Elsewhere on the show, Nikki Bella & Paige faced off backstage to continue their bad blood, agreeing to a singles match in Mexico. Another feud in the women’s division continued too, as Giulia attacked Blake Monroe backstage as payback for recent weeks of ambushes, leading to a brawl into the arena.

Another women’s division feud was furthered as Charlotte Flair & Tatum Paxley teamed up to defeat the reigning WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Fatal Influence (Lainey Reid & Fallon Henley) in non-title action. The new tag team of Bakusai (Shinsuke Nakamura & Kyoki) got off to a winning start, beating The Miz and Kit Wilson, before getting stared down by the new WWE Tag Team Champions, The MFTs.
