Dexter Lumis recalls Indi Hartwell’s attempts to make him break character during WWE romance storyline 

Dexter Lumis reflected on his memorable on-screen wedding to Indi Hartwell on the September 14, 2021 edition of NXT. He recalled their chemistry and how Hartwell would often try to make him break character. 

Lumis remarked how this WWE wedding was ‘not disastrous’ unlike the other ones. And how he uttered ‘I do’ as his first two words in WWE. Lumis talked about chemistry with Hartwell and how their comedic connection would fuel her to attempt in making him break character. He admitted on the Insight Podcast that the two of them still have a portion of the script saved.

“That’s it. ‘I do.’ That never happens. It could have gone differently. There were ideas that were thrown around that was going to go off way different, but I’m really happy with that 10-minute wedding segment. I still have a little script saved, so does Indi, because it was a very special thing for us. Because how many people can say they were in WWE and they had a wedding on TV that went off without a hitch, or just had a wedding in general?” 

“You got to be, I think, perceived a certain way to get that for yourself on a TV that they’re giving you that time on TV because it’s entertaining. We were entertaining enough to pull that off, and we had a connection with the fans, and we had a connection with each other. She would try and break me, man.” 

Lumis cited Hartwell made him crack up during rehearsals but when it was airing live he maintained composure. 

“Close, but she was like the only one that could almost do it because she was so ridiculous. I’d have to be in character, like this stoic (person). If we’re out there with Johnny, for instance, and he’s having a match, and I’m just standing there watching my friend wrestle, she’d be on the apron just staring at me. I’m just like trying not to look over there. During rehearsals, I’d break, but I’m like all right, this is the time to get it out. When the red light’s on, and we’re live, pal, you ain’t gonna break me.”

The on-screen WWE couple, often referred to by fans as InDex, began their relationship in late 2020. Hartwell’s association with The Way led to become obsessed with Lumis and eventually proposing in August 2021. The storyline quietened down following Lumis’ exit in 2022.
