MLW Fusion results (8/29): Vetter’s review of Bishop Dyer vs. Matt Riddle, Shotzi Blackheart vs. Jazzy Yang for the MLW Featherweight Title, Brick Savage vs. Flip Sequoyah

This is the third episode from this taping. As I’ve noted, MLW, from a production standpoint has never looked better. Joe Dombrowski and Tom Lawlor are back on commentary, and Joe said on last week’s episode that this was a sellout.

* Long-haired Matt Riddle entered the building. The ‘rude dude is going to put the beat down tonight” on Bishop Dyer! (Riddle looks so much different today than he did from this taping in May. He now has short hair, and he’s blond again, not purple-haired like he is here.)

1. Shotzi Blackheart vs. Jazzy Yang (w/Corinne Joy) for the MLW Featherweight Title. If you aren’t aware, yes, Jazzy is the daughter of Jimmy Wang Yang. They traded rollups early on. Shotzi hit her 619 in the corner and a top-rope crossbody block, sending Yang to the floor. Shotzi hit a somersault from the apron to the floor, crashing into Yang. Corinne distracted Shotzi, allowing Yang to hit a kick. Yang had a bloody nose! They got into the ring, and Jazzy hit a spinning heel kick to the jaw at 2:00. Lawlor just noted the bloody nose.

Yang hit a Russian leg sweep, and she tied up Shotzi on the mat. Shotzi hit a second-rope missile dropkick and a series of kicks, then a suplex into the turnbuckles. Shotzi nailed her rolling cannonball for a nearfall at 4:00. Jazzy hit a Shining Wizard for a nearfall. Shotzi hit a running stunner. She went to the top rope, but Corinne jumped on the apron to distract her. Shotzi pushed Joy back to the floor, then hit a top-rope senton for the pin. Solid action.

Shotzi Blackheart defeated Jazzy Yang to retain the MLW Featherweight Title at 5:30.

* Lady Frost came out of the back and glared at Shotzi. She’s got next!

* A video package aired for Texas-based indy star Brick Savage.

* A video of a diamond appeared on the screen along with the words “coming soon.” What is that about??? (Editor’s Guess: Tessa Blanchard?)

* Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson were preparing for a three-week tour of Japan. Doc had his teenage son, CJ Gallows, handling all his bags.

* “Glasgow Boys on Top” Mark Coffey, Joe Coffey, Wolfgang were in the back and looked into the camera. They listed all the other tag teams in MLW, and they said they could beat them all. They are coming for tag team gold!

2. Brick Savage (w/Josef Samael) vs. Flip Sequoyah. I’ve seen Terry “Flip” Sequoyah just a couple times — he had a really good indy match against Diego Hill a year ago. Brick might have 80 to 100 pounds on Flip. He threw Flip into a corner and hit a running splash into the corner. Flip hit a spin kick to the head, then another. Brick hit a hip toss, then a spear in the corner. He picked up Flip’s lifeless body and just dropped him. He picked him up, slammed Flip face-first, and pinned him. Yeah, it was that short.

Brick Savage defeated Flip Sequoyah at 1:58.

* A medic checked on Sequoyah. Samael threw a fireball into the medic’s face! “This man is sick!” Dombrowski shouted.

* The New Skyscrapers spoke in the back about Bishop Dyer’s match later.

* We saw the vignette again for “HATE,” a women’s faction in Japan.

* Dombrowski narrated a video about the history of the Opera Cup. The 2026 tournament starts in two weeks! The brackets will be revealed next week!

3. Matt Riddle vs. Bishop Dyer. They brawled at the bell. Donovan Dijak joined commentary. Dyer hit an Irish Whip, and he choked Matt in the ropes. They rolled to the floor at 1:30, where Dyer hit some punches. Back in the ring, Bishop remained in charge. Riddle applied a modified Tarantula in the ropes. Dyer hit a short-arm clothesline, then a punch to the jaw, and another. Bishop hit a brainbuster for a nearfall at 4:30.

Dijak stood up and glared at Riddle. Dyer threw Matt shoulder-first into the corner. Matt threw Dyer shoulder-first into another corner. They traded forearm strikes, then traded jumping knees. Matt hit some flying forearms. Matt hit his top-rope Whisper In The Wind. He missed a moonsault, but he hit an RK-Bro stunner for the pin. Surprisingly short — no need for a commercial break.

Matt Riddle defeated Bishop Dyer at 6:38.

* Dijak got in the ring and stomped on Riddle. Killer Kross hit the ring and hit Dijak. Joshua Bishop snuck up behind Kross and hit a chokeslam on Kross! Kross grabbed a mic and told Joshua Bishop, “We are due for a dance.” He challenged Joshua in a “no holds barred” match for the title!

Final Thoughts: A decent episode. A shockingly short episode, coming in at just 38 minutes. With MLW having dozens of hours of footage ready to go, why not move up a match or two and make this closer to an hour?

The main event was fine enough, but they really need to deliver longer matches that will grab attention. This was fine-but-forgettable. A good post-match segment, though. Both Shotzi and Brick did their parts.
