Bully Ray Believes A Mixed Tag Team Division Would Help Solve A Problem For WWE

Bully Ray has advocated for WWE to bring back mixed tag team wrestling and introduce a new championship for it.

WWE has moved away from mixed tag team wrestling, with it restricted to just a few high-profile matches involving real-life couples, like CM Punk-AJ Lee against Seth Rollins-Becky Lynch. But Ray thinks there are enough teams in WWE to add a mixed tag team title and feature it more, which he spoke about on “Busted Open.”

“You could make an entire division around the husband and wife teams, boyfriend-girlfriend teams in the WWE. I think mixed tag team championships in the WWE would work. And you know how I am about championships. There are entirely too many championships. There are championships that are not so well-defined or not true to what they were. But a man and a woman tagging against a man and a woman, it’s just like mixed doubles in tennis,” argued Ray.

The Hall of Famer stated that such a championship wouldn’t be as prestigious as a singles title, but he believes it would be a good way to utilize stars that aren’t getting the screen time they deserve. He recalled mixed tag team wrestling being a key part of the Attitude Era, detailing how it was entertaining. 

“There are so many guys and gals in the WWE that are really not being utilized,” he said. “Let me tell you something, back in the day, Attitude Era, I loved mixed tag team wrestling. Me and Trish Stratus would team all the time against like Stevie Richards and Chaz and Molly Holly and Spike. We had mixed tags, they were so much fun. And it wasn’t sporadically; it was a part of the show, especially when we had the hardcore championship involved.”

Ray added that the teams could be created by lottery or wrestlers could find their tag team partners on their own. He also feels that AAA, which is owned by WWE and has a mixed tag team championship, should be featured more prominently too.
