Why WWE Have Distanced Themselves From TNA

In 2024 & 2025, an official working relationship was struck between WWE and TNA, leading to plenty of crossover for quite a few months. This brought about fresh matches, more spotlight handed to TNA, and wrestlers winning titles in opposite promotions. However, despite the working relationship still technically being intact and with some very minor crossover here and there, 2026 has been completely different in the approach to this relationship. For some reason, WWE has begun to distance themselves from TNA… and this might be why. The real reason for WWE’s step backwards regarding TNA might not be about TNA at all, but instead it may actually be about AEW.

WWE & TNA Featured Plenty Of Crossover In Their Working Relationship

• TNA was mentioned regularly on WWE programming.
• NXT wrestlers won titles in TNA.
• WWE spotlighted TNA wrestlers in NXT.

Throughout 2024 and 2025, the partnership between WWE and TNA looked to be developing quite strongly. For instance, TNA stars were appearing on WWE programming, with TNA World Heavyweight Champion Joe Hendry competing against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41, the likes of Trick Williams & Jacy Jayne winning world title gold in TNA, and plenty of crossover involving WWE’s developmental brand in NXT. TNA secured a brand new TV deal in 2026, likely helped by their affiliation with WWE.

However, 2026 has progressed as things haven’t quite been the same between WWE and TNA. As the year has pressed on, WWE’s involvement in TNA has lessened and crossover between the two promotions has depleted to an almost non-existent level (with Arianna Grace providing the most in terms of WWE presence on TNA programming). Sure, there are still mentions of TNA and some crossover here and there, but it is a far cry from what it once was, posing the question of “why?”. Well, the answer all comes from WWE’s initial intentions of working with TNA in the first place.

WWE Wanted TNA To Challenge AEW

• WWE is actively seeking to get rid of AEW’s challenge.
• WWE wanted TNA to become the number two promotion in the United States.
• AEW has been a target of counter-programming.

WWE and TNA touted that their official working relationship was to help “TNA and its incredible athletes to reach a significantly wider audience” and stated that “collaboration and competition do not have to be mutually exclusive”, but there is a theory regarding the real reasons behind this alliance. WWE has been counter-programming AEW around every corner, stacking AEW’s PPV weekends with multiple of their own shows, booking venues in the same locations as major AEW events, and has sought to undermine Tony Khan’s promotion. WWE’s partnership with TNA may have had underlying intentions to damage AEW’s momentum.

WWE giving TNA a boost to try and help them challenge AEW as the number two professional wrestling promotion in the United States is completely feasible. If TNA is number two and under the control of WWE, then it strengthens WWE’s stranglehold over the entirety of the professional wrestling business. Ever since the days of Vince McMahon, dominating the entire industry has been a goal with and without him at the helm, with TKO looking to squash the potential challenge and threat posed by AEW. Bringing aboard TNA allows WWE with another avenue to counter-program AEW and take eyes off their product. However, with TNA settling very much into the same role as they’ve always had behind AEW, WWE has lost interest.

After TNA’s TV Deal Landed On Thursdays, WWE Lost Interest

• WWE stopped caring for TNA after their new TV deal.
• WWE may have wanted TNA to go head-to-head with AEW Dynamite.
• TNA’s deal on Thursdays led to WWE taking a backseat.

TNA were seeking to secure a big TV deal over the last year, backed by the support and working relationship of WWE. There were many rumblings that TNA were hoping to secure a Wednesday spot for their IMPACT show, putting them head-to-head with AEW Dynamite. With WWE’s previous attempts to put their own show in NXT head-to-head with AEW, there may have been some salivating going on amongst those in WWE and TKO… until TNA settled for Thursday nights on AMC.

It might be sheer coincidence or it may not be, but WWE’s interest, crossover, and care for TNA dropped almost immediately after this TV deal became official. TNA were no longer a useful tool to use in their nonsensical “war” with AEW, therefore the promotion was deemed surplus to requirements. PWInsider noted last year that the working relationship with WWE and TNA was a three-year deal, and it would not be a surprise to see this not renewed. This is all, of course, a theory, but WWE having little care for other promotions is nothing new.
