WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler has received a lasting tribute from his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.

On Thursday, August 20, a section of Homer Street was honorarily renamed “Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler Street,” celebrating the wrestling legend’s decades-long connection to Memphis and his impact on the city.

The honor was originally approved by the Memphis City Council in June, with the official ceremony taking place at Treadwell High School. Lawler was joined by his son Kevin, Jimmy Hart, legendary Memphis wrestling announcer Dave Brown and several local political figures for the occasion.

Brown spoke about Lawler’s journey from a local wrestling attraction to becoming one of the most recognizable personalities in the industry.

“He got some breaks, but he made his own breaks. And he grew to become not only good in Memphis, he became the king of Memphis,” Brown said about Lawler. “Then he became the king of wrestling. And that’s where he is right now , the king of wrestling. He was local. He was regional. He was national. And he’s international. They had some matches in Saudi Arabia several years ago, and Jerry was one of the wrestlers they specifically requested be a part of that show in Saudi Arabia.”

The location chosen for the tribute also carries considerable personal significance for Lawler. He said he has “so many memories” connected to Homer Street, recalling spending time playing on the area’s baseball and football fields during his younger years.

Lawler became synonymous with professional wrestling in Memphis during the territory era, serving not only as one of its biggest in-ring stars but also working behind the scenes as a booker and co-owner. His popularity helped make Memphis wrestling a television institution in the region, particularly during its years airing on Action 5 News.

The 76-year-old remains a major celebrity in Memphis outside of professional wrestling. During Thursday’s ceremony, Lawler was praised for maintaining his connection to the city despite achieving international fame. Over the years, he has operated businesses in Memphis and even made a run for mayor.

Lawler has continued to make appearances at wrestling-related events despite suffering multiple strokes in recent years. Earlier this month, he attended WrestleCon in Minneapolis alongside longtime friend and former WWE commentary partner Jim Ross.

And while his days as a regular in-ring competitor are behind him, “The King” has not completely closed the door on wrestling again. In December 2025, Lawler suggested, perhaps with his trademark sense of humor, that he still believes he might have one more match left in him.
