Maple Leaf Pro “Mayhem” results (8/13): Vetter’s review of Rohan Raja vs. Stu Grayson in a title vs. title match, Rhino vs. Bryce Hansen, four-way tag team match

Maple Leaf Pro “Mayhem – Episode 5”

This is the second episode from this taping. This is Scott D’Amore’s promotion, and this taping looks absolutely no different than a TNA taping in this venue. The crowd looks good, maybe 500 to 700. Mauro Ranallo and Don Callis provided commentary.

* Rhino was in the ring as the show began. He’s here to “show everyone he is still the war machine!” He demanded an opponent come face him! Backstage, Sheldon Jean sent Bryce Hansen out!

1. Rhino vs. Bryce Hansen. Bryce came to the ring in his blue jeans and a button-down shirt — he’s not dressed to wrestle! (He’s pretty talented too; he’s competed in Japan. Why is he being sacrificed to someone who is around age 50?) Bryce tried to stall at the bell. They brawled on the floor. (Mauro clearly dubbed in some commentary here, talking about Adam Copeland coming to Maple Leaf Pro, and that the Oct. 3 show is sold out.) In the ring, Rhino was in charge, and he hit a spear into the corner at 2:00. Hansen hit a top-rope flying double axe handle, but he missed a top-rope flying headbutt. Rhino immediately cut him in half with a Gore for the pin.

Rhino defeated Bryce Hansen at 3:36. 

* Several fans were interviewed on the streets, talking about Psycho Mike, and why they love him so much. This was a fun, simple segment. [C]

* A vignette aired for a man, who was standing by a bonfire. He spoke in a foreign language but we had English subtitles. Not sure who that’s for — we didn’t see a full face.

2. “Grizzled Young Veterans” James Drake and Zack Gibson vs. El Reverso and Mo Jabari vs. “The Swirl” Lee Johnson and Blake Christian vs. Mascara Dorada and Capitan Suicida in a four-way tag. We only saw the intro for GYV — everyone else was already in the ring. (I don’t see this as a sign of disrespect to those three — this is about trimming time to fit their hour of TV.) Blake and Dorada traded lucha reversals at the bell. Drake tagged himself in. He battled Suicida. Lee entered and hit a superkick. The masked El Reverso (he wears Canadian white-and-red!) entered and hit a top-rope moonsault to the floor at 3:00. [C]

Returning from the two-second break, Drake had Reverso in a headlock on the mat. Christian tagged in, and he jawed at Drake, but they took turns striking Reverso. Jabari tagged in and hit a top-rope double missile dropkick. Jabari hit a back suplex on Blake. Mauro reminded us that Mo Jabari is training with Bret Hart. Dorada hit a top-rope armdrag on Blake. The Swirl trapped Suicida in the Tree of Woe and hit some blows on him. Reverso hit a springboard back kick on Blake. Gibson made a blind tag and tossed Reverso to the floor, and the GYV nearly pinned Blake.

The Swirl and GYV hit stereo clotheslines, and all four were down at 7:30. (Mauro again clearly dubbed in commentary about Copeland coming.) The luchadors brawled with Mo and Reverso. Suicida dove through the ropes onto six guys, then Dorada hit an Asai Moonsault onto everyone. In the ring, Suicida hit a Lethal Injection on Reverso. Dorada hit a 450 Splash on Reverso. Suicida hit a twisting Swanton Bomb to pin Reverso. This is my style of a match.

Mascara Dorada and Capitan Suicida defeated “Grizzled Young Veterans” James Drake and Zack Gibson, El Reverso and Mo Jabari, and “The Swirl” Lee Johnson and Blake Christian in a four-way tag at 9:09. The live report had it at 12:53, according to cagematch.net.

* A vignette aired for Dani Luna, who is focused on winning the MLP Women’s Title from Gisele Shaw. That match takes place next week!

* A slightly different sit-down promo with Adam Copeland. He talked about the partnership with AEW, and how Tony Khan wants to see wrestling flourish everywhere. He noted that Scott D’Amore saw an interview Copeland did, saying he wanted to someday wrestle in Maple Leaf Gardens, and that led to this match coming together. (We still don’t know who Copeland will face.)

3. PWA Champion’s Grail holder Rohan Raja (w/Aurora Teves) vs. MLP Interim Champion Stu Grayson in a ‘Title versus Title’ match. The crowd chanted “Stu Two-Belts!” during the ring intros. They brawled at the bell. The ref tried to separate them, but it allowed Raja to hit a kick. Stu clotheslined Raja to the floor as we head to a [C] at 1:00. (Again, no commercials air on MyAEW. The screen just goes black for two seconds, then the program returns.)

The guys were brawling on the apron, and Raja shoved Stu into the ring post. In the ring, Raja was in charge and stomped on Stu and kept him grounded. He grabbed Grayson by the beard, but it just angered Stu! Stu fired up and threw some punches. Stu went for a Lionsault at 4:00, but Teves shook the ropes, and he fell to the mat! “I hate when managers interfere,” Callis said. “Pardon me????” Ranallo replied. The ref ejected Teves. Stu hit the Lionsault for a nearfall. They again fought on the apron. Stu hit a brainbuster on the apron at 6:30! They both fell to the floor.

They got back into the ring, but both were down, and the ref was counting. The crowd chanted, “Fight forever!” [C] It doesn’t appear they actually cut anything in that break. They traded forearm strikes. Raja hit a Lungblower to the back for a nearfall at 9:00. He hit a Black Hole Slam for a nearfall, and we got a “This is awesome!” chant. Stu hit an overhead release belly-to-belly suplex, then a second one at 10:30. The crowd chanted, “Suplex City!” Stu hit a third one, then a fourth!

Raja hit a headbutt, but Stu hit a headbutt and the fifth belly-to-belly suplex, then a sixth one! Stu hit a leaping DDT onto the apron, earning a “Mamma Mia!” from Mauro. Stu hit a 450 Splash for a nearfall at 13:00. Stu superplexed Raja, and he popped back to his feet. Raja sidestepped a flying knee, and Raja locked Stu in a leg lock on the mat. They traded rollups. Stu nailed the running knee. He hit another one, then the Night Fall (Torture Rack into a backbreaker over his knee) for the pin! Double champ!

Stu Grayson defeated Rohan Raja to retain the MLP Interim Title and win the PWA Champion’s Grail at 15:43/live reported time of 21:04.

Final Thoughts: I’m repeating myself, but these tapings have been pretty awesome. That crowd was hot and totally into that main event. I’ve been a wrestling fan for about 40 years now, and I feel like I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen someone win a belt in a title-vs.-title match. So, I was expecting a double count-out, or double DQ… some finish that allowed Raja to retain. Thus, I was pleasantly surprised by Grayson’s win to claim a second belt.

Can someone just give me Mascara Dorada, one-on-one, against Blake Christian? Please? Blake and Lee spent this week competing in Mexico before appearing on AEW Dynamite on Wednesday. A really fun four-way tag to open the show.

The biggest problem of these first few episodes is the willingness to sacrifice the Canadian undercard to TV stars. Bryce Hansen is too good to be served up to Rhino. Find some other new kid to do that. I had the same reaction while watching Vaughn Vertigo and Gabriel Fuerza lose a quick tag match on a prior episode. Each episode has come in at 44 minutes, perfectly timed for an hour of broadcast TV.
