John Cena has made it clear that his days as an in-ring WWE Superstar are permanently behind him, with a new report also shedding more light on his long-term arrangement with the company.

Cena officially brought his wrestling career to an end in December 2025 and has repeatedly insisted that retirement means retirement. According to Fightful Select, the possibility of the 16-time world champion stepping into the ring for another wrestling promotion was never considered realistic within WWE.

Cena had previously described the prospect of wrestling elsewhere as “financial suicide,” but there is another significant factor preventing such a move.

Following his retirement, Cena reportedly signed a five-year agreement with WWE that will see him continue working with the company in an ambassadorial capacity. The terms of that deal are also said to prevent Cena from competing for another wrestling promotion.

While fans can therefore expect Cena to remain connected to WWE for years to come, another project carrying his name is already being developed.

The previously announced John Cena Classic is currently expected to take place in December, although plans remain subject to change.

Cena announced the tournament during an appearance at Backlash after previously serving as the host of WrestleMania 42. The concept is set to bring together competitors from Raw, SmackDown and NXT, with fans having a role in voting to determine the eventual winner.

The tournament follows a similar philosophy to The Last Time Is Now Tournament and the December 13 Saturday Night’s Main Event, which provided wrestlers from across WWE’s brands with opportunities to showcase themselves.

That approach also fits with Cena’s comments throughout the latter stages of his career. The WWE legend has regularly spoken about wanting the spotlight to move towards the company’s next generation rather than using his retirement to set up another comeback.

Although Cena will remain part of WWE through his ambassadorial role, all indications are that fans should not expect that relationship to result in another match.

WWE is currently targeting December for the John Cena Classic, though the timing remains subject to change.
